This 1969 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750 has a very interesting history, originally owned by the Malaysian diplomat to The Netherlands. His son brought the car to Canada in the 1970s, and it has been an important part of my own life for the past 13 years. This car culminated my obsession with Alfa Romeos, and now most of my free time is spent racing them as part of the VARAC racing group. Unfortunately, with my limited time these days, I have to sell my beloved GTV. It is a great car and someone out there will love it and baby it.

Car History
I have an incredible amount of documentation on the history of this car, dating back to the original purchase and service records. This car was originally purchased by the Malaysian diplomat to The Netherlands (*see photo of original dealer service booklet). The original owner to this car is a member of a prominent family from Malaysia. I have further detail on the car having spoken with the original owner at length through emails earlier this year. The car was purchased in The Hague, The Netherlands and resided there for several years. He was part of the Rob Slotemaker racing school (*see photo of decal on rear windshield) and had spent some time at the Zandvoort race track. A car with the same exact decal in the same location on the car was restored and documented on the Alfaholics website (Google "Rob Slotemaker Alfaholics" - see first link).

When the original owner went to university in Canada, the car was shipped to Montreal, Quebec, wherein he drove it for 4 years. After graduation, he reluctantly had to sell the car before moving overseas. Many of the original service receipts/records are still with the car (*see photos) showing everything from oil changes to new tires to major services. One important thing to note is that the original owner had extra gauges installed on the front dash, angled towards the driver. This was done shortly after the purchase of the car.

Service records indicate that the car spent time in New Jersey around the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s. The car was purchased by an Alfa Romeo Club enthusiast in the 1990s. I purchased the car from him in 2002.

Personal History with this car
I first saw this car when I was 14 at Mosport Racetrack and immediately fell in love. I continuously followed this exact car to Alfa Romeo club meets. During a weak moment, the previous owner decided to sell this car to me when I was 17. I babied this car the best I could for the past 13 years. I met my wife in Dairy Queen while driving this car! However, unfortunately in the past 3-4 years this car has seen little to no use (children!). It has sat in my garage while I work on my Alfa Romeo race car beside it. My small amount of free time is mostly spent on racing these days, and I am unable to give this car the love that she deserves.

Audi rumored to buy Alfa Romeo, officials deny it

Thu, 28 Mar 2013

For more than two years, Volkswagen has been making public statements about its willingness to buy Alfa Romeo and quadruple the Italian brand's sales, and for just as long, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has replied with some version of "Mr. Piëch, drop it." According to a report in Ward's Auto, all that jousting might be over: it claims that sources close to both Marchionne and Audi CEO Rupert Stadler admit that the two are in talks for Audi to buy not just Alfa Romeo, but a production plant in Italy. In fact, a final deal could possibly include partsmaker Magnetti Marelli.
Against that backdrop, a report by German news weekly Stern quotes a Fiat spokesmen as saying it doesn't comment on rumors and an Audi rep has said flatly that "There is no substance in the news." If a sale is being arranged, the timing would seem to point to how eager Fiat is to raise cash to complete its major initiatives. Even though Alfa Romeo continues to delay its return to the US, it just showed off the production version of the 4C at the Geneva Motor Show (shown above) and said that preferred Fiat dealerships here would get them. Then there's Alfa's recently concluded deal with Mazda to develop a roadster based on the next generation MX-5 Miata - a deal that would seem to help both the Italian and Japanese brands.
The monetary issues are troublesome, though. Fiat is taking a beating in the European market and its weak-kneed balance sheet is delaying gotta-have-it products like the Jeep Cherokee. Fiat has been talking to banks about getting money to buy the rest of Chrysler and those financial institutions have also raised issues about debt and cash reserves, and the nasty game of chess Fiat is playing with the United Auto Workers (and now the court system about the portion of Chrysler it doesn't own) could end up blowing another hole in Marchionne's plans. It is possible that this could finally have convinced Fiat to at least see how serious Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, is about buying Alfa Romeo. Or it could be just another rumor.

Marchionne to make Alfa Romeo a separate company within Fiat

Mon, 28 Apr 2014

According to a report in Automotive News that quotes "people familiar with the matter," the next big play in Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne's plan for Alfa Romeo is to break it off from Fiat Group Automobiles and set it up as a separate company within the Fiat empire, giving it the same structure as Ferrari and Maserati. The idea, say the sources, is that a transparent, standalone Alfa Romeo that has to justify its every move could clearly prove its success in the public financial statements it would have to report, finally achieving Marchionne's aim of making Alfa Romeo "a credible business proposition."
That, of course, assumes that Alfa Romeo will make a success of it. The brand hasn't made a profit in any year of Marchionne's decade at the helm; sales last year fell to numbers not seen in almost half a century and its new product offensive might not include the two vehicles currently responsible for 99 percent of its sales. We're told that the brand's six new models will begin arriving in 2016 - a roadster, a midsize sedan and large sedan, a compact SUV and large SUV, and a large coupe.
Marchionne aims to expand Alfa's global appeal in several ways, the first by stressing that they are Italian products that 'belong' to Italy. This is the stance that appears to have put the kibosh on the roadster twinned with the coming Mazda MX-5/Miata. Alfa Romeos will all be made in their home country, and if they take off they'll help bandage Fiat's problem with underused plant capacity, a bugbear that is just as problematic culturally and politically as financially. Top-tier trims would use V6 engines developed by Ferrari, and global access would get a boost by selling Alfa Romeos in Jeep's 1,700 international dealerships.

Marchionne offers belated apology for 'wop engine' comment

Wed, 22 May 2013

Automotive News reports Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has issued a written apology for his comments regarding his decision to stick with an Italian engine for the upcoming Alfa Romeo 4C. As you may recall, back in January, Marchionne was quoted as saying, "I cannot come up with a schlock product, I just won't. I won't put an American engine into that car. With all due respect to my American friends, it has to be a wop engine." The CEO penned an apology to the Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition for using the racial epithet, saying that he made the comment in jest. Marchionne also said he realizes his remarks were unacceptable.
ONE VOICE, an organization aimed at fighting discrimination and stereotyping of Italian Americans, thanked Marchionne, Chrysler and Fiat for the apology. Marchionne is an Italian-born Canadian citizen, and he's gotten in trouble for other comments in the past. In 2011, he called high interest rates Chrysler was paying to the Canadian government "shyster rates." He apologized a day later.
