I PURCHASED THIS CAR A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNERS FOR MY SON'S FIRST CAR.  IT HAD 115,000 MILES WHEN PURCHASED AND 128,000 NOW.  THE CAR HAS DRIVEN GREAT AND IS A LOT OF FUN BUT WITH TOO MANY CARS, THIS ONE HAS TO GO.

THIS IS A RARE SPORT PACKAGE WITH A FRONT AIR DAM, SPORT SUSPENSION, LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL, SPORT STEERING WHEEL, AND RECARO SEATS.  I ADDED PERIOD CORRECT 15" BBS WHEELS (15X6 IN FRONT, 15X7 IN BACK) WITH NEWER 205/50/15 FALKEN TIRES.

MECHANICAL - AS MENTIONED THE CAR RUNS GREAT, AND IS VERY DEPENDABLE.  BRAKE PADS HAVE JUST BEEN REPLACED AS WELL AS THE REAR DRUMS.  JUST PASSED CALIFORNIA SMOG IN OCTOBER, SHIFTS THROUGH ALL THE GEARS SMOOTHLY AND THE STEERING IS VERY TIGHT.

BODY - WHEN WE BOUGHT THE CAR, WE TOOK OFF MOST OF THE PARTS AND HAD IT PAINTED IN THE ORIGINAL ALPINE WHITE COLOR.  IT TURNED OUT VERY NICE, BUT NOT THE PERFECT JOB WE WERE LOOKING FOR.  THERE IS A DENT IN THE HOOD AND A COUPLE OF VERY MINOR DINGS THAT CAN BE REMOVED VIA PAINTLESS PAINT REMOVAL.

RUBBER AND MOULDINGS - MOST OF THE WEATHERSTRIPPING WAS REPLACED, I HAVE NOT REPLACED THE BELT MOULDINGS AT THE BASE OF DOOR WINDOWS. THE ANODIZED MOULDINGS ARE ORIGINAL AND HAVE NOT BEEN REDONE.

RUST - AS IS WITH ALMOST ALL OF THESE OLD BIMMERS, THERE ARE SOME MINOR RUST ISSUES, I HAVIE TRIED TO INCLUDE PICTURES TO SHOW WHERE THE PROBLEM AREAS ARE.  NONE OF THE RUST IS IN THE FRAME, THE UNDERSIDE IS CLEAN.  TYPICAL RUST AREAS ARE UNDER THE TAILLAMPS AND AROUND THE SUNROOF.  THE SUNROOF IS CLEAN, BUT THERE IS SOME MINOR SPOTS IN THE REAR PANEL AREA AND UNDER THE TAILLAMPS THAT HAVE RESURFACED.  I AM IN THE PROCESS OF REPAIRING THOSE FOR THE NEW BUYER.  IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, THERE IS RUST NEXT TO THE BATTERY TRAY AND A COUPLE OF SMALL SURFACE RUST SPOTS ON THE SHOCK TOWERS.  WE JUST DIDNT GET AROUND TO GETTING THOSE SPOTS FIXED YET.

INTERIOR -THE INTERIOR IS IN GREAT CONDITION, BUT NOT PERFECT.  THE DASH WAS CRACKED WHEN PURCHASED SO I HAD A COMPANY CALLED JUST DASHES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REPAIR IT.  THERE ARE NO CRACKS IN THE DASH, ALTHOUGH IT HAS A COUPLE OF SPOTS IN THE TRAY AREA THAT HAVE WARPED A LITTLE, VERY MINOR (SEE PIC). IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER AGAIN, I WOULD HAVE JUST BOUGHT A CAP, TAKING THE DASH OUT PROVED TO BE PROBLEMMATIC AS NOW THE AC AND VENT CONTROLS DONT WORK WELL AND THE THE CONSOLE STICKS OUT ABOUT A 1/4 INCH FROM WHERE IT SHOULD BE.  IT HASNT BOTHERED US SO I HAVE NOT REPAIRED IT.  THE SEATS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, NO RIPS OR TEARS, THE CARPET IS NEW AND LOOKS GREAT.

NOT WORKING -AS MENTIONED THE AC AND HEATER CONTOLS DON'T WORK GREAT.  HEAT COMES OUT BUT THE AC DOES NOT WORK AT ALL.  THE STEREO JUST STOPPED WORKING, NOT SURE WHAT IT IS.  I'LL TRY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED BUT NO GUARANTEES IT WILL BE WORKING WHEN SOLD.  THE WINDSHIELD WIPER WATER DOES NOT SQUIRT AND THE WIPERS DON'T WORK GREAT.  OTHER THAN THAT, THESE ARE CARS ARE VERY SIMPLE AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS IN WORKING ORDER.

OVERALL, IT IS A VERY FUN CAR TO DRIVE AND WITH THE LITTLE WORK ON THE AREAS MENTIONED ABOVE, THIS ONE COULD BE THE ONE TO KEEP IN YOUR GARAGE FOR A LONG TIME.

Researchers halfway to cutting carbon fiber costs by 90%

Wed, 15 Oct 2014

Carbon fiber has been utilized for decades to build racecars, as a means to cut weight while maintaining strength. But until recently, the space-age material has been largely absent from the street on anything but supercars because of the expense to use it. Recently, BMW signaled a major shift in that trend when it starting using carbon fiber reinforced plastic panels on the i3 and i8. This relatively small scale start might be just the beginning; the German company believes that a breakthrough to inexpensively manufacture the lightweight stuff is just on the horizon.
MAI Carbon Cluster Management GmbH counts BMW, Audi, Airbus, the German government and many other organizations as supporters, and it's researching how to make carbon fiber cheaper to produce, according to Automotive News Europe. The company thinks it can reduce costs by 90 percent in the near future. "We've certainly reached a halfway point on our cost-cutting target for suitable carbon-fiber parts," said project head Klaus Drechsler to Automotive News Europe.
Unfortunately, it isn't entirely clear just what MAI Carbon is doing to make such a huge leap possible. However, a recent post on the company's website talks about a new form a carbon fiber using a thermoplastic matrix that could be cured in less than three minutes. That's compared to about 90 minutes in the traditional process with an autoclave.

BMW looking to save billions with cost cuts

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

BMW is planning a fairly extensive overhaul in a bid to recoup some its annual costs, with CEO Norbert Reithofer (pictured above) aiming to save three to four billion euro ($4 to $5.4 billion) per year to help keep the company's profit margins between eight and 10 percent, while also maintaining investments in production expansion and new tech. BMW's profit margins sat at 9.4 percent in 2013.
According to Automotive News Europe, Reithofer is none too pleased about costs at Mini and on the 1 Series, although neither AN nor its source story, from Germany's Manager Magazin, elaborate on what steps could be taken to improve losses on either project. That makes it hard to figure out just where the fat will be trimmed from.
What may happen, though, is that BMW attempts to trim 100 million euros ($135 million) from its German labor costs each year; a solution hinted at a few weeks ago by Germany newspaper Muenchner Merkur. While a dramatic cost reduction, 100 million euros still doesn't begin to even approach the savings envisioned by Reithofer.

BMW 1 Series sedan interior revealed

Sun, 09 Nov 2014

The next BMW 1 Series Sedan has made another appearance following our last peek at it in September, and this time, the gallery of images even reveals part of the new car's interior.
Of course, if these images prove anything, it's that manufacturers take camouflage of the interior just as seriously as they do the exterior. We can see in these images a fairly simple cabin, with what looks like a fixed central display. It's quite small, although the housing itself is rather large, so we could be looking at a more basic form of iDrive rather than the full-featured set. Overall, though, this cabin more or less confirms that the 1 Series Sedan will fit in with the rest of the BMW family quite nicely.
Outside of the interior images, though, there isn't a lot of new stuff revealed by these images. As for when we'll see both the interior and exterior fully undisguised, our spies continue pointing to a 2016 debut with a 2017 on-sale date.
