THE OVERVIEW
Offered for an appreciating new owner is this super clean all original ONE FAMILY OWNED 1988 BMW 325is two-door coupe that was featured in the October 2009 issue of BIMMER Magazine.

The history on this car is that my Aunt and Uncle bought this car in June of 1989 from a BMW dealer in Fremont California.  After a few years they moved to Oregon where the car was maintained and garaged until March of 2007 when my Aunt died.  I flew up to Oregon and we purchased the car from my Uncle and brought it back to California.

In April of 2009 we were approached about BIMMER Magazine doing a story on the car.  The Editor and Photographer/Writer came down to Santa Cruz and took pictures and heard my story on the car.  In October of 2009 the story came out.  When recently asked why this car is special, it is because it is in such excellent condition for its age, it is a great color combination and that it is an automatic.

Finished in Alpine white over cardinal red leather, this ADULT owned 26 year-old E30 is one of the best remaining unmodified exampled you could want.  The E30 chassis three series cars are finally rising in value and if you want a no-excuses example, THIS IS THE ONE FOR YOU! Driven an average of about 5,800 miles per year since new, this car sports the 168 horsepower 2.5 liter inline six cylinder engine mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock. This 1988 325is has never been in any accidents. Part of the “iS” package means it has the original-stamped "is" rear spoiler and the manual Recaro-sourced sport seats, "M" leather steering wheel and more. This 325is also features cold air conditioning (and excellent heat as well), perfect crack-free dashboard (We have it covered by a removable cover), electric sunroof and windows, cruise control, on-board computer, check panel and AM-FM CD with iPod integration in the glove box!

THE BODY AND TRIM
The exterior of this car is in outstanding condition overall which numerically I would rate as a solid 9.0 on a scale of 1-10!  The beautiful Alpine white paint is completely original and still shines like new.  This car has never been in an accident, so all of the body panels are original and never been repainted.  The aluminum trim around all of the windows is shiny and non-oxidized.  The front spoiler is NOT original.   When I bought the car my Uncle explained that my aunt would bump into curbs and he got tired of replacing the iS front spoiler and went with the factory 325i original rubber lip spoiler.  The mesh wheels are also not stock.  After buying the car from my Uncle, I had the tires and rims replaced.  None of the rims have ANY blemishes.  There is a small area on the black rubber area on the rear bumper that looks like sand paper, but it is a small area and I just wanted to point that out.  The central electric locking system stopped working a few years ago.  The only items on the outside that are not stock are the wheels and rims, the front lip spoiler and the M stripe on the hood.  Overall this car shows beautifully as an extremely well-kept E30!

THE INTERIOR
The interior of this non-smoker car is in excellent condition overall with beautiful original dash (Not one crack, protected by a removable dash cover), cardinal red leather manual sport seats with very little wear on the bolsters.  When my Aunt owned the car, she had knitted covers for the headrests, so they too are flawless.  The driver’s side bolsters were recovered in August using original BMW Cardinal Red leather.  I have more of it should the new buyer need any in the future.  The nice original floor carpeting is protected by front and rear, custom, red and black cocoa mats, flawless door panels, rear deck with factory speakers and nice original headliner. The rear seats were rarely used and have been protected by a red towel, so the seat has NO blemishes whatsoever.  The ashtray is clean with the cigarette lighter showing no sign of ever being used, the air blows cold, all controls and functions work as they should.  Minor imperfections include drivers side fog lamp bulb needs replacing (I have the replacement), brake lining light comes on intermittently.  This is a common issue with E30’s and the warning lamp.  What’s nice is that the warning lights all do work when something has been wrong.  In regards to the interior, the only non-original items are the stereo and iPod adapter in the glove box, the floor mats and the reupholstering of the driver’s seat bolsters.  Overall, this is a very cool original classic cockpit which stills show pride of ownership more than a quarter century later!

MAINTANENCE
I take care of what I own and when you see this car, you will know that it was maintained by someone that cared for it.

This car was meticulously maintained!  I keep a spreadsheet of every single thing I do to any of my cars and this one was no exception.  Here is just two items we recently had done:

October 2012…148,249 New Muffler

July 2013……...149,816 New Timing Belt, Water Pump and Coolant Flush

THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
This classic BMW starts, runs and drives EXTREMELY well with good acceleration from the superb-running 2.5 liter baby six cylinder engine, smooth and crisp-shifting automatic transmission shifting up and down, superb and straight braking with good pedal feel, firm yet smooth and supple suspension with excellent tossable handling and wonderful steering feel.  Overall this little E30 provides a smooth and very satisfying driving experience!

This BMW 2 Series ad has run afoul of Aussie ad watchdogs [w/poll]

Tue, 29 Apr 2014

A complaint by an Australian movie-goer has put the brakes on an extended in-theater ad campaign by BMW, and drawn the attention of the country's Advertising Standards Board. According to the anonymous complaint, the ad "portrays an unfavorable message, contrary to safe and sensible driving."
The ASB upheld the complaint, which said the ad for the new M235i showed driving "typical of hoon activity," thanks to the burnouts, dusty drifts and runs up to redline. It's that last one that seems to have gotten the spot in the most trouble, with the ASB acknowledging that even though the car wasn't shown breaking the speed limit, the ad was in violation of a voluntary code of conduct for automotive advertising, according to Australia's Go Auto.
BMW doesn't seem to agree, pointing out that the ad uses creative editing, aggressive camera angles and other filming tricks to "add visual impact."

BMW X2 in the works?

Thu, 20 Mar 2014

BMW could bring yet another niche-busting product to the market in 2017 if a report form a forum is to be believed. According to the BMW X1 Forum of Bimmerpost, 2017 could see the debut of the BMW X2. Yes, X2.
Allegedly, this car will ride on the UKL platform, which is slated to underpin both the next-generation Mini Countryman and BMW X1. The X2, though, will play the role occupied by the X6 relative to the X5 - that means it'll be the same basic vehicle with a more sporting (i.e. less practical) roofline. The denizens of the forum claim the X2 will only be offered with xDrive all-wheel drive, and unlike the X6 and soon-to-arrive X4, it will be available in both three and five-door variants.
We reached out to BMW for comment, and got the typical "There's no plans as of right now" statement, although spokesman Dave Buchko did add that, "It's fun to speculate."

BMW begins restoring Elvis Presley's 507 [w/video]

Thu, 24 Jul 2014

Imagine the King of Rock n' Roll driving a car and you'll likely picture a pink Cadillac or a yellow De Tomaso shot full of holes. But Elvis also owned a 1957 BMW 507 roadster, and now that roadster is returning home to BMW headquarters.
The 507 was a rare bird, of which only 254 examples were ever made. They were sold mostly to celebrities and royalty, but Elvis Presley was a GI when he bought it while stationed in Germany. The example that he bought had been displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, used as a press car and raced by Hans Stuck (which is how Elvis came to see it in the first place), so when he took delivery of it second-hand, the dealership had a new engine installed. It was originally white, but legend has it that Elvis got tired of women writing their phone numbers on the side of it in lipstick that he had it repainted in red.
Stories differ on what exactly happened to it next, with some saying that he returned it once the lease was up and other saying that the army shipped it back to him in the States after his tour was over. But what we do know is that the car sat for many years, neglected but sheltered from the elements. Now it's heading to the the BMW Museum in Munich, where it will be on display until August 10, after which the BMW Group Classic department will undertake a comprehensive restoration of the star-studded roadster that's expected to take two years of work.
