The BMW e30 is one of those modern classic cars that people would still happily buy if they were still being made.  Unfortunately, most e30s for sale in 2013 are either totally used up or so well preserved and ridiculously expensive that they can't be used as a daily driver.  This car perfectly straddles the divide; with a little work it could be a collector/show car, but it's not so pristine that you feel guilty about driving it in the real world!

I've owned this car since 2006, and spared no expense in caring for it over the last 7 years.  I had intended to keep it forever, but I recently purchased a 1988 BMW M3 and now I have more cars than garage space.  I would have no hesitation to drive this car anywhere.  This car has never seen snow or salt, having lived in California from 1991 to 2009 and been stored in the winter since.

Exterior:
- Smiley Euro Ellipsoid Headlights
- Euro Front Grills
- "Shadowline" Window Trim
- Mtech 2 Rear Spoiler
- Borbet Type T Wheels
- Kumho Ecsta 4X tires 205/50ZR16, less than 2,000 miles since new.
- General Appearance: Paint is very good for a 20+ year old car.  The hood has been repainted but has a few small road rash chips.  Pictures of each panel are included, along with a close-up of the largest flaw in the paint.  The wheels have very minimal curb damage (see pictures).  The finish of the wheels is "spiderwebbed" from freezing and expanding when stored over MN winter.  This is only seen up close, and a re-finish would be easy if desired.

Interior:
- Crack Free Dash
- A/C blows cold
- Comfort seats with very minimal wear, no cracks or tears
- Rear Headrests (Euro part)
- No cracks or tears in door panels or foot kick-panels
- Alpine Stereo with iPod connection
- Almost new Black e30-specific floormats (from Bavauto)

Engine/Mechanical:
- Original m20 with 114,XXX miles
- Timing belt changed 2011 (<5000 miles ago)
- Automatic Transmission shifts perfectly (5-speed swap parts available for $650 on top of sale price)
- New Catalytic converter in 2008 to pass California Smog
- Stainless Steel exhaust (sold to me as Ireland Engineering, but may be knock-off)
- New Battery in 2013

Suspension:
- Bilstein Sport Shocks (<20,000 miles)
- H&R Sport Springs (<20,000 miles)

The "Bad": (This is a 20+ year-old car)
- Power Mirror adjustments stopped working last year (probably the switch is bad)
- Speedometer works when on gas, but not when coasting (likely the connection at the rear diff)
- "Brake Lights" warning on check panel even though all lights work (very common, my M3 does the same thing)
- 5-foot paint job (again, very good considering age)

I will accept cash, cashier's check, or wire transfer (confirmed before title signed).  If you pay by cashier's check we must complete the transaction at my bank during normal business hours so I can confirm the check.  I will pick up the buyer at the Rochester, MN airport if desired.  There is a frequent (and cheap) shuttle from the Minneapolis Airport (MSP) to Rochester, and I will also pick up the buyer at the shuttle drop-off site.

Is Audi getting complacent and suffering from brain drain?

Wed, 27 Nov 2013

The argument is made in a Reuters article: Audi is falling behind other luxury brands, such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, due to a lack of research-and-development spending and "brain drain," or the migration of top executives and R&D chiefs to other parts of the Volkswagen Group. Reuters notes that Audi's current R&D chief is the third in 16 months.
Audi, which contributed to 40 percent of VW Group's $11.6 billion in profit the first nine months of the year, is delivering cars at a record pace: 1.31 million were delivered from January to October 2013 versus BMW's 1.35 million. Yet Audi, Reuters reports, doesn't have a halo car akin to BMW's new electrified i3 and i8 or an answer to Mercedes' plug-in-hybrid S-Class, and the R&D spending at Audi is less than BMW and Mercedes by a fair margin. It's noted in the article, however, that Audi benefits from other R&D spending within VW Group.
Reuters mentions that BMW "trumpets its new 'i' series" and the new Mercedes CLA and GLA ranges are winning "rave reviews" as part of its argument that Audi's recent lack of technological innovation could hurt future sales. Those cars do pack tons of new technology, some of which are firsts for mainstream production cars. But last time we checked, the i3 could be causing BMW's stock to slide, the CLA isn't receiving the rave reviews that Reuters would have you believe and the GLA hasn't been reviewed yet.

Are you the next BMW X5?

Tue, 15 Jan 2013

Who knew that diecast model makers could be such a good source of leaks? Less than a month after a diecast model 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA in China, someone overseas at Diecast Empire or Jadi Modelcraft could get a bath in boiling oil for leaking uncamouflaged images of the next-generation BMW X5.
Naturally, that assumes that this image from a brochure from a Jadi brochure is indeed the F15 BMW X5 - it was posted to Diecast Empire's Facebook page. In its favor, the lines all add up if we compare it to the most revealing spy shots we have of the coming crossover - the headlight corners, the metal trim separating the kidney grille from the opening just above the license plate, the cut of the swage line, and the fact that the model picture reveals all of the most important character pieces that BMW has kept covered.
There's something written on the door of the model image that isn't in the spy shots, but that could be an xDrive badge. We will see the genuine article soon enough and we'll know for sure. For now, we might have already seen its facsimile in miniature.

Europe's BMW 1 Series hatch caught looking fresh faced

Sat, 23 Aug 2014

Hey, remember the BMW 1 Series? Yes, German brand's successors to the US-market coupe and convertible have one-upped the old car to wear the 2 Series designation now, but in other markets, our No. 1 crush still lives on, and as evidenced in these spy shots, the entry-level hatch appears to be undergoing a modest facelift.
We've spotted prototypes of the refreshed 1 Series before, with the majority of the car's changes focused around the front fascia. This time around, we're seeing the three-door variant, with wheels seemingly fitting of a Sport or even M Sport trim.
Of course, this One's not for US, as the small BMW isn't slated to come to our market anytime soon. Click through the gallery above to see what we're missing.
