The all-wheel-drive 335xi features the 328's 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine using a new lightweight magnesium/aluminum composite alloy for its block and incorporating, for the first time in a six-cylinder engine, BMW's Valvetronic variable valve lift technology. To achieve more power, BMW strapped on intercooled twin turbochargers with direct fuel injection. The result is fervent praise for a smooth 300 hp and 300 pound-feet of torque - without turbo lag. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, or you can opt for an optional six-speed Steptronic automatic that includes normal, sport, and manual shift modes.
With its impressive acceleration comes the handling that established BMW's "ultimate driving machine" slogan. The 335xi combines traditional 3 Series handling prowess with the latest generation all-wheel drive. xDrive is a sophisticated, intelligent all-wheel-drive system that starts with a 40/60 front/rear torque bias and adjusts torque fore and aft according to road conditions. It is integrated with the Dynamic Stability-Control system, which adjusts lateral traction to counter excessive oversteer or understeer.
The 3 Series won the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest possible rating in both frontal offset and side impact tests. The 335xi includes as standard safety equipment antilock disc brakes, dynamic brake control, stability control (which incorporates disc-pad wiping of brake rotors when windshield wipers are in use), run-flat tires, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags.
3 Series cabins feature high-grade materials, exceptional build quality, and modern design. The 335xi Coupe is designed for four passengers, with two rear seats divided by a center console. The front seats continue BMW's tradition of providing excellent support and comfort. The optional Sport Package provides power adjustable sports seats.

Alex Zanardi back in the driver's seat with BMW
Tue, 21 Jan 2014If there's ever been an inspirational story in the pantheon of motor racing history, surely it's that of Alessandro Zanardi. The Italian driver worked his way up the motor racing ladder, making it into Formula One and winning two CART championships for Chip Ganassi Racing back before the series re-merged into IndyCars. Tragedy struck in 2001 when he lost both his legs in a crash at the Lausitzring in Germany, but rather than accept his fate, Alex pushed on. Fitted with prosthetic limbs, he learned to drive a racing car with hand controls and got back in the driver's seat.
Zanardi drove for BMW in the European Touring Car Championship and then in the World Touring Car Championship that replaced it, landing on the podium several times despite his physical disadvantage. He left racing in 2009 to train for the Paralympics, winning two gold medals in London, but Alex apparently couldn't shake the racing bug. BMW modified one of its M3 DTM racers with hand controls for him to test later that year. And now he's returning to motor racing full time.
BMW has just announced that Zanardi will be driving a Z4 GT3 in the Blancpain Sprint Series, the successor to the FIA GT Series and short-distance counterpart to the Blancpain Endurance Series. The car has been modified with the hand controls the Bavarian automaker's racing department fitted to the aforementioned M3 DTM and will be fielded by the ROAL Motorsport team with which Alex challenged for the European Touring Car Championship last decade.
BMW, Toyota outline new tech joint venture, new sports car
Fri, 25 Jan 2013Back in June, Toyota and BMW announced a "memorandum of understanding" outlining plans for the two companies to join forces on future products and technology development. On Thursday, they signed a more formal and binding agreement that goes further into detail about the partnership, and it all sounds pretty exciting. The two announced they will work together in four main areas:
Joint development of a fuel cell system
"Set up a feasibility study to define a joint platform concept for a mid-size sports vehicle"
BMW X4 M40i spotted testing in Germany
Mon, 04 Aug 2014The stream of segment-busting BMW variants is showing no signs of letting up, and with the latest addition now upon us, questions have been circulating as to whether the Bavarian automaker would do an M version of the new X4 crossover. The jury may still be out on that proposition, but the latest intel suggests that, while a full-on X4 M may not be in the cards, a next-best-thing X4 M40i is in the works. And that appears to be what we're looking at in this fresh batch of spy shots.
Spotted for the first time undergoing testing in Germany, this X4 is tipped to be the next addition to the M Performance line that's already given us near-boiling models like the M135i and M235i on the one hand and the diesel-powered M550d, X5 M50d and X6 M50d on the other. Power in this case is tipped to come from the same 3.0-liter turbo six as the upcoming M2, producing between 360 and 380 horsepower.
Unlike the current top-of-that-specific-line X4 35i, which has two tailpipes on one side, this partially-camouflaged prototype has one pipe protruding from each corner of the rear bumper, but looks like it could easily accommodate twin pipes on both sides. Expect commensurate suspension, brake, rolling stock, aero and trim upgrades to come as part of the package, though they likely won't be quite as substantial as those applied to the X5 M and X6 M.
