Hard to find 6-speed manual sport sedan.  No slush-box here folks.  This is a true three-pedal car as God and the good Germans intended!  Beautiful Montego Blue Metalic BMW E90 335i twin turbo sports sedan - the sedan all others aspire to be.  It might have something to do with its striking looks. Or the remarkably powerful 6-Cylinder Twin Turbo engine encased in its boldly designed body. Or the carefully designed interior, now with even more customization options. Ultimately, all of these features are what makes this 3 Series Sedan the best 3er yet.

This car has the navigation system.  At first a bit cumbersome; however, once you get used to the iDrive control it's really not bad.  Figure an hour or so to master the menu system; then it's a piece of cake.  Dual zone heating keeps your passenger comfortable while you pilot the best sport sedan in the world (well... not counting the M3 equivalent).

The car is in great condition for it's age and mileage.  There are the usual stone chips on the front of the hood (which I touched up with BMW touch-up paint late last summer), and a few small scratches - too small for my camera to even capture.  Interior is in amazing condition.  Factory floor mats show little wear.  Leather has been treated with leather conditioner three or four times a year - it should last a good long time.

BMW's 3-Series has always been an example of how to combine luxury and sportiness, and the 2007 335i is no different.  New for 2007 is a twin-turbocharged version of BMW's famous 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine with double-VANOS technology to steplessly adjust both the intake and exhaust timing and two turbos to produce 300 horsepower and an equal amount of torque. This beauty is matched with a superb six-speed manual transmission.  This BMW has a marvelously balanced chassis and outstanding road feel. Easily adjusted and very supportive seats are the norm, as is one of the nicest steering wheels found in a modern automobile. A stiff suspension means the 3-Series is at its best when carving corners.Standard equipment is generous, with stability and traction controls, xenon adaptive headlights (they turn when you turn the steering wheel), a moonroof, power heated mirrors, a tire pressure monitor, dynamic cruise control, automatic tri-zone climate control, a 10-speaker audio system, side seat-mounted and curtain air bags, and power windows and locks.  This 335i model include a memory feature for the mirrors, power seats, a LOGIC7 sound system with 13 speakers and surround sound simulation, and an assortment of visual adjustments.  Options are extensive, ranging from a rear parking assist and a DVD-based navigation system, to run-flat performance tires (rear) and an increased top-speed limiter.  The wheels are 18" BMW and tires are like new.

Here's what Car and Driver had to say about my car:

Experience has taught us that no vehicle is immune to improvement. No matter how seductive the styling, no matter how compelling the dynamics, we know that somewhere squads of designers and engineers are toiling to make a good thing even better.

Consider the BMW 335i sedan.

When the fifth-generation 3-series sedan made its debut in early 2005, it was hard to see just where a significant improvement might be made in this outstanding car. Then the 335i coupe came along, and suddenly the plan became clear. Right: they'll make that 3.0-liter turbo engine available in the sedan.

And here it is.

Background: The 2006 330i helped the 3-series make its 15th consecutive appearance on the Car and Driver 10Best Cars list. Its classic inline-six, a BMW powertrain mainstay since 1924, was re-engineered from top to bottom, with heavy emphasis on weight reduction, including extensive use of magnesium, a new valvetrain, new everything. The result was a dramatic uptick in output: 255 horsepower, 220 pound-feet of torque, from a 3.0-liter engine that was 22 pounds lighter than its predecessor. It lowered the 330i's 0-to-60 mph time to 5.6 seconds.

Impressive. Or at least it was. Because the 330i sedan is about to disappear from BMW's North American lineup, to be replaced by the 335i.

But, based on our experiences with the coupe, and a little driving on Michigan byways, we aren't planning to do any mourning for the departure of this outstanding sedan. That's because, as good as it was, the 330i seems just a little tame compared to the 335i.

The secret is under the hood, which shelters a twin-turbo version of the 3.0-liter inline six. With both turbos generating max boost-about 8.5 psi-the six twirls up a robust 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque.

Paired with the standard six-speed transmission, this is sufficient to propel the 3616-pound 335i to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, with essentially no turbo lag-the tiny hesitation between the time the driver punches the throttle and the onset of full boost. That's a tenth quicker to 60 mph than was the slightly lighter 335i coupe, an advantage the sedan held through the quarter-mile (13.5 seconds at 106 mph).

There's no question that the 335i sedan carries forward the class-leading dynamic standards established by the 330i-smooth ride quality, right-now responses, laser-precise steering, powerful, fade-free braking-amplified by a superb new engine that generates big horsepower and, arguably more significant, an abundance of torque delivered over a curve that's as high and flat as a mountain mesa.

BMWs don't come cheap, and the 335i sedan is no exception. On the other hand, it starts at $39,395, which is $1900 cheaper than the less-practical coupe. And you could look at it this way: the 335i delivers performance comparable to a current M3, with a lower pricetag, the added convenience of four doors and a more civilized persona that's easier to live with day in, day out.

Suddenly the 335i looks even more attractive. And the word outstanding suddenly seems a little feeble.

30th Anniversary BMW M5 information leaks out

Mon, 05 May 2014

BMW hasn't kept its 30th Anniversary M5 a very big secret. It even hinted that "a surprise" was coming while celebrating its Autobahn-storming sedan's 30th birthday. However, what exactly was on the way has been a mystery... until now. The folks over at Bimmerpost have found some leaked details about the new model, and it's definitely more than just some badges special paint.
The biggest upgrade for the M5 is that power allegedly increases to 592 horsepower (600PS) and 516 pound-feet of torque (700 Newton-meters). That is a 32-hp and 14-lb-ft increase over the standard M5 and 17 ponies more than models with the Competition Package. The forum claims that all of the cars come with a dual-clutch gearbox, even in the US.
Styling also sees an upgrade with BMW Individual Frozen Dark Silver Metallic exterior paint, special 20-inch wheels, dark chrome trim and 30th Anniversary badges. The interior mixes Merino leather and Alcantara upholstery with dark aluminum trim and more celebratory badges.

Six 'shut up and take my money' cars

Tue, 11 Nov 2014

Any time you see this iconic moment in pop culture - Shut up and take my money! - posted in response to a new car reveal, rumor for an upcoming model or even lip-service to a vehicle that should exist, you can bet there's some intrinsic good in the idea. Though depending on the person offering up the cash, that good could take the form of extraordinary form, functionality, weight savings, power, handling, etc. You get the idea.
In fact, when I first proposed this list, I reached out to the Autoblog staff to help me brainstorm. Here are some of the ideas they offered up that I ultimately didn't use: Jaguar XE Coupe, Pagani Huayra Roadster, Mercedes-Benz S-Class "parade car" (cabriolet), Morgan 3-Wheeler with Ducati V-twin, Ford Transit Connectamino (pickup), Mercedes CLA63 AMG, Ford Fusion 5.0, BMW i8 Spyder, Lexus RC-F Shooting Brake, Volvo XC90 Polestar. Oh, and things we collectively wanted to stick Dodge's Hellcat in were almost as numerous as models that Fiat Chrysler Automotive currently makes (though none quite so compelling as the Grand Cherokee you see above.)
Ultimately though, while I used a couple of ideas from my colleagues, the list of cars I'd shell out for unquestionably is very personal. Though it isn't complete, what follows is a selection of cars whose very existence would prompt me - or the trust-fund-baby versions of me - to utter without hesitation: "Shut up and take my money."

Totally uncovered BMW M3 caught by helmet cam

Tue, 29 Oct 2013

Sure, we've seen - and even ridden in - the 2015 BMW M3 before, but always under the cover of camouflage. Proving that it's always nice to be in the right place at the right time, a motorcyclist managed to capture a completely undisguised 2015 M3 (codenamed F80) on video during a closed-road photo shoot.
Road & Track has the helmet cam video, which shows the bright blue M3 doing a three-point turn as it follows a camera car possibly for an upcoming commercial or launch video. While the images are grainy, we do get to see some of the styling details for the next-gen M3. Aside from the extra set of doors, this M3 looks a lot like the Concept M4 Coupe we met a few months ago, including the bulging hood, oddly shaped door mirrors and the wide, vented front fenders. The aggressive fascia, big wheels/low-profile tires and quad exhaust outlets all but confirm this is the production M3 we'll be seeing at the Detroit Auto Show in a couple of months.
We've put together a gallery using screen shots from the video, but check out the video posted below to see the new M3 in motion.
