Very fine, well cared for example. This model was only made in '87 and '88. I have owned several and am selling because I bought another one. Purchased 5yrs. and 20K mi. ago in western Colorado from seller who owned it for 10yrs. and 20K mi. Originally sold in Virginia. Three owners. I have original window sticker with purchase price of $39,555 showing optional limited slip differential; I believe this was the only option available. I have original sales brochure. I have all my records but not older ones. Professionally maintained by local BMW expert. Car is dry and rust free except for very minor trace surface rust appearing at joint areas of rear driver's side quarter panel which was replaced sometime prior to my ownership; the material used to seal the panel has developed very slight cracking and some hairline rust tracing. Also, same thing near roof line on left side due to roof rack mount; it seems newer paint is thinner and shows these slight rust streaks. See photos. Older paint does not do this. Panel below rear bumper has more than other areas but still small. Entirely surface. Panel and rear door were repainted and have faded less than original paint resulting in some color contrast; new paint is brighter than original paint. This contrast appears more pronounced in bright light photos than I think it does in person; it does not jump out when you see the car but it is noticeable upon closer inspection. The contrast between the trunk and quarter panel is more pronounced that between front and rear doors.

BMW Shanghai: Driving in mega cities, designing the future and more
Thu, 25 Apr 2013
The BMW enclave is a suitable mix of high-tech and throwback cool.
A few days before the Shanghai Motor Show kicked off, we were part of an international group of media that was invited to have a look at the BMW Designworks Shanghai Studio and ConnectedDrive Lab facility. The building that BMW found to house its Chinese think tank is in a lovely part of Shanghai known as the former French Concession. The late 1890s and early 1900s French architectural style, brick-paved streets and tree-lined spaces feel a world apart from the ultra-modern heart of Shanghai, and the BMW enclave is a suitable mix of high-tech and throwback cool.
Dinan S3-R BMW 1M Coupe
Wed, 02 Apr 2014I nearly shed tears a few years ago upon learning that BMW was only planning to produce a very limited quantity of its then-new 2011 1 Series M Coupe. In simplest terms, the two-door was a 1 Series fitted with a modified version of the automaker's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, and the running gear (gearbox, driveshaft, axles) from contemporary M3 models. It was also a return to form for the brand. Aggressively short and stubby in stature but packing telltale flared wheel arches that hinted at its potential, the four-seater was a spiritual successor to the original (and much loved) E30 M3 from decades earlier.
After spending a day with the original high-performance 1 at New York's Monticello Motor Club, I declared, "The little coupe with the big flares is old-school retro cool and deliciously fun to drive ... the new BMW 1 Series M Coupe doesn't target boy-racers, it targets enthusiasts." Yet sadly - and despite strong demand - BMW limited the model's production to just one year. All told, only 740 units made it to the States, and each was gobbled up at a starting price of $46,135, a price tag history will show to be a bargain.
Since I had little hope of even driving one again, I deliberately pushed all memories of BMW's 1 Series M Coupe from my mind - until my phone rang recently. On the other end was a representative from Dinan Engineering who wanted to know if I would be interested in driving the company's new S3-R BMW 1M. A quick Google search revealed it to be a heavily modified version of the discontinued 1 Series M Coupe. As if they needed an answer...
A look back on BMW, South Carolina and Southern manufacturing
Sat, 29 Dec 2012It has been 20 years since BMW broke ground on its Spartanburg, SC manufacturing facility, and while the automaker doesn't have any plans to mark the moment, economists and industry analysts have taken a closer look at the facility's impact on South Carolina, the South and global manufacturing. As of November, the Spartanburg plant's 7,000 employees cranked out 25,000 vehicles per month, and BMW has poured some $6 billion into the state since the plant opened in 1993. While that figure nearly matches the state's proposed budget for next year, some say there have been drawbacks.
To begin with, South Carolina provided BMW with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of public money and tax breaks with little public oversight, setting a precedent that would repeat itself with other corporations. The Detroit News reports that a Pew Center evaluation found 26 states didn't have a sufficient system for evaluating tax incentive performance. But BMW opened the door for a Southern manufacturing renaissance, with automakers from Mercedes-Benz to Hyundai and Volkswagen opening plants in the Deep South.
While states have raced to offer ever sweeter tax and cash incentives for big manufacturers, officials say BMW is proof the system can pay dividends. You can read the full piece here.
