1984 Bmw 745i Turbo - Euro Model With Extensive Service History - California Car on 2040-cars
Van Nuys, California, United States
The 745i Turbo was a special high-performance model offered in left-hand-drive North American and European markets between 1979 and 1986. It was originally fitted with a specially prepared 3.2 L (3205cc) i type-M30 six-cylinder gas engine and a turbocharger producing 252hp at 10 psi of boost with a Borg Warner K27 Turbocharger, BMW Intercooled engine code M102. In 1984 the engine grew to 3.4 L, and was known as the M106. These cars were all built with automatic transmissions (although there is documentation supporting how the ECU was modified at the factory to work with Getrag 5 speeds) and could be ordered with exotic options such as heated front and rear power reclining seats, auto-on aux interior gasoline fired heaters, leather covered cellular telephones, rear-armrest radio control, water buffalo hide upholstery, and burl wood trim. The water buffalo interior model was the Executive trim option, while the High Line trim package offered ivory leather interior trim including a leather dash board, sun visors, headliner, and other leather bits not offered on the Executive. BMW designated this particular model as 745i instead of 732i Turbo due to the theoretical assumption that the turbocharged motors have about 1.4 times more power than naturally aspirated motors. Thus, 3,2-litre (3206cc) turbocharged motor has "power equivalent" of 4,5-litre (4494cc) motor without forced induction. This particular 745i Turbo was imported to the US around 2000 and received a California BAR sticker around that time. The car resided in the San Diego area from 2002 until the day I acquired the car in late 2013 and drove her home to Los Angeles, where she has been since. The car retains the small European bumpers, which are so much prettier than the large US models, and looks to be wearing the original paint, in very good condition except that the clear coat is failing on the roof and a small area of the trunk lid (as is typical for these cares). I see no evidence of any prior accident damage. The interior is in excellent condition as well, with the original buffalo hide leather still soft and supple all around, showing beautiful patina that can be acquired only through loving use and care. One of the rear headrests has a split on a seam, which can likely be resewn, the passenger side floor mat (presumably original) has some damage and the dash exhibits typical cracking. Mechanically, this car runs extremely well. After I bought the car, we changed the oil, filters and spark plugs, and I replaced the battery in April 2014. The car fires up easily, even after sitting for long periods, idles well and runs out nicely, producing excellent power, no smoke or strange noises, and is a pleasure to drive. The car shows 219,xxx miles, however I noticed that the odometer does not appear to be working. The two prior owners lavished a great deal of attention and money on this car. I have a large stack of service records going back to 2002 which document all of the maintenance and service this car received. I stopped adding these up at $30,000! The prior owner was an architect, who was fastidious about the car as it was his pride and joy. He serviced the car primarily at the local BMW dealer in San Diego, and then a well-regarded independent BMW mechanic. After he passed away, his nephew inherited the car but didn't drive it much, so it mostly sat in the driveway in San Diego for about a year. After I purchased the car, I drove it back to LA without incident and gave the car a minor service. I drove the car a little bit after that, but it spent most of the time sitting in my warehouse in Van Nuys, where we restore vintage Porsches. I replaced the battery in April 2014. The car comes with 4 keys, 2 remotes for the alarm, owner's manual, detailed service records going back to 2002, and the complete factory toolkit. Please note that there are some back fees due in California if you wish to register the car here, as it is not on non-op status and has not been registered for the last year or two, but I have been told that in some instances classics and collectibles may be able to avoid or reduce some of these fees. A flash-enabled slideshow is above, with over 50 photos taken the week of April 15, 2014 - if you are using an iPad or iPhone, you won't be able to see these. I try to be accurate and complete in my descriptions but all prospective purchasers agree that this description is solely for convenience, should not be considered a complete description of any or all faults, and should not be relied upon or considered a representation or warranty or any sort. The car is sold as-is, where-is with all faults known or unknown. A pre-purchase inspection is strongly encouraged, and in person inspection prior to auction closing by appointment is welcome. Remember, this is a 30 year old car; it is not showroom new. If you have ever had an old car, or you are considering owning one, you should understand that there is an almost endless list of repairs, improvements, corrections and details that can be attended to. Like the car, I am old too, so I may have forgotten things that are important to you. I apologize for this lawyerly disclaimer, but we live in strange times. This vehicle is advertised for sale elsewhere and I reserve the right to terminate this auction at any time. Please check out our other auctions. Thanks. BMW preparing two concepts for Villa d'Este
Thu, 20 Mar 2014Every spring, the finest automobiles ever to grace tarmac gather on the shores of Lake Como for the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. It's a chance for the most beautiful classics to compete for awards and for automakers and design studios to show off their concept cars under the soft light of the Italian sun. But while most of the vehicles old and new that show up for the concours are ones we've seen before, BMW takes things a step further.
As patron of the concorso d'eleganza for the past ten years, BMW regularly cooks up something new for the glamorous extravaganza. Last year it teamed up with Pininfarina for the Gran Lusso Coupé and revealed it alongside the Concept 90 motorcycle. The year before that came the BMW Zagato Coupe, preceded by the 328 Hommage and the M1 Hommage (pictured above) before it.
The theme for this year's event is the Roaring Twenties. BMW may not have been known back then on the same level as Bugatti or Duesenberg, but Rolls-Royce sure was.
BMW considering North American engine plant?
Fri, 13 Dec 2013BMW may be set to expand its US operations with a new engine plant, Bloomberg reports. The Bavarian automaker already has its Spartanburg, SC factory which builds the company's X3, X5 and X6 crossovers. According to the story, Mexico is also under consideration for the BMW engine factory, with the report claiming a final decision will be made in 2014.
"Establishing local motor manufacturing abroad is more complex than assembling cars, but it's a logical step for them to eventually start making engines in markets where they're expanding vehicle production," Juergen Pieper, an analyst for Bankhaus Metzler tells Bloomberg. Building engines in the US or Mexico would save BMW from having to ship engines for some of its most popular models across the Atlantic.
BMW, for its part, hasn't said anything concrete. Spokesman Mathias Schmidt is quoted in the story saying, "As part of our long-term growth strategy, we're frequently looking at different countries for possible locations of future production facilities. No decisions have been made yet, though, for an additional plant."
BMW to follow Honda back into F1?
Mon, 14 Apr 2014The economic downturn wrought devastating effects on motor racing. Formula One alone lost half its engine suppliers when Honda left at the end of the 2008 season, and both BMW and Toyota followed at the end of 2009. But things are looking up again. Cosworth may have dropped out this season, reducing the engine suppliers to three: Ferrari, Renault and Mercedes, the latter of which admits that it may have left had the engine formula not changed. But Mercedes has stayed and is dominating the championship. Honda is coming back next season. And word around the paddock is it may not be the only one.
According to Giancarlo Minardi - founder of the team now known as Scuderia Toro Rosso - BMW engineers have been conspicuously spotted lately at F1 test sessions and grands prix, lending to speculation that the new engine regulations may entice the Bavarian automaker back into the series. According to Minardi, BMW's marketing division is pushing for the automaker's return to F1, with the board slated to make a decision in May. BMW would be more likely to consider an engine-supply deal rather than taking a team over like it had with Sauber, but with which team or teams it might collaborate remains a big question mark at this point.
As if that's not enough, Ford is said to be considering taking over Cosworth's aborted V6 turbo engine program to take both outfits back into the sport as well. Cosworth supplied F1 engines under the Ford banner for years, but returned under its own name for four seasons from 2010 through 2013 before shuttering its program to develop an engine to meet the new regulations adopted this season.
