2000 740i Shorty Sport - Bluetooth OEM Widescreen

Silver/Black, with sport trim and Seats. 140+k miles, Steptronic five-speed true M sport package. Very quick. Staggered M-Pars on 6/32 left on Pilot Sport A/S OEM spec wheels, ALL fluids refreshed. The car is driven daily and it has been well taken care of over the last 13 years. I'm the 3rd owner, the second owner was my parents who babied this car. The care was orginially purchased in Canada and shipped to Utah. All Oil Changes have occured every 4k miles with OEM BMW Synthetic oil. As with any 13 year old car it does have some door digs and chip (near the hood). I lightly scraped the rear driver side bumper lightly (see pic) but over all this E38 is in great condition.

What is new: New radiator overflow, new head gasket, New Powder Coated Head Gasket Cover, new NKG Spark plugs new BOSCH MAF, New OSV, New OEM Floor Mats with BMW logo, All New Front Suspension: New less than 1k miles on B8 Front Bilstein and Struts Melye HD Thrust Arms/Lower arm replaced. It has MediaBridge Bluetooth integrated into steering. Updated 2001 OEM rear tailights and clear side markers. New HVAC filter. Brake Rotors and Ceramic pads replaced 7k miles ago.

What needs to be looked at: The HVAC in the car works fine but you need to put the heat to the max inorder for the heat to come out of the vents. When it comes out it is hot. The Air conditioning works good but the air does not reculculate only fresh air. The Ducts in the engine bay need to be replaced and I have the part which is included in the auction.

What does not work: The front driver seat controls blows a fuse and needs to be replaced. About a $200 fix on ebay. The dreaded cupholder in the dash doesn't work, but I have a great aftermark dual cupholder that works great. The rear trunk struts are dead $30.00 each.

What will need to be replaced within the next 12k miles. Differential joint (part cost about $100). Break lines for all 4 corners $100. The power steer reservior is leaking and needs to be replace (the OEM part will be included with Fluid). Replace the Fuel Filter (will be included in the sale of the car). The rear suspension will need to be replaced in the near future

I will throw in the following which my BMW repair guy didn't do: New Power Steering reservoir and BMW PS Fluid, new OEM Fuel Filter and air return unit.

This is a great car and will move fast at this price! I'm looking to sell it within the next 7-10 business days. I'm sad to see it go but its time to get an EV for the 405 drive.

The car is located in Northridge, Ca 91326. I've never shipped a car before but I might be open to the idea. I would feel much more comfortable with someone buying this car in person.

Consumer Reports selling its road-tested roadsters [w/video]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

Here's a chance to acquire a celebrity-owned vehicles, and this time at a discount instead of a premium. So the celebrity in this case is Consumer Reports, that magazine that could be equally adored and abhored by car enthusiasts. CR buys all of its test vehicles and usually finds willing second owners within its own ranks, but its opening its small used-car lot to the public. On the forecourt are four roadsters: an automatic 2012 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic with 6,600 miles for $36,500, a manual 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i with 8,400 miles for $45,000, a manual 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 for $39,500 and a manual 2013 Porsche Boxster with 7,000 miles for $48,000.
Those numbers mean a savings of $9,000 to $10,000 before haggling - each car is listed with an "Asking price" so there could be some wiggle room if you show up with pockets full of dough and eyes full of serious intent. Since the money CR earns from the sales go back into the magazine's budget to buy more test cars, however, it probably won't take any oddball trades, so you can forget about getting any purchasing help from that track-day AMC Javelin project on blocks in the back yard.
The vehicles have been taken care of and spiffed up for sale; buyers will take delivery at the CR test track in East Haddam, Connecticut and get a tour of the facilities. While you're there they'll even take you on a lap around the track so you can feel how your car handles when driven by one of its testers. They will probably not help you with advice on which toaster and dehumidifier to buy - you'll still need to get a subscription for that. Have a look at the video below to see a day in the life of a CR test car.

Next BMW X1 moving to smaller, lighter FWD-biased platform

Thu, 20 Feb 2014

BMW's decision to make the upcoming 2-Series Active Tourer front-wheel drive has been polarizing to say the least, but like it or not, that is the direction the company will go in the near future - one rumor put the number as high as 23 front-wheel-drive models for Mini and BMW combined. The next-generation X1 won't send all its power to the front wheels, though, when it launches in early 2016. While it will use the same platform as the Active Tourer, rumors suggest all models will use all-wheel drive - at least at launch.
A "high-ranking," unnamed BMW manager confirmed to AutoWeek that the new model will switch to transversely-mounted three- and four-cylinder engines and the same six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions as the Active Tourer. The new, smaller platform will allow for more efficient packaging, and despite the smaller size, interior space will remain comparable. All the changes should make it significantly lighter too.
Don't start wailing just yet because BMW surely won't be entirely abandoning sporty models. AutoWeek claims that the Bavarians are working on a higher-output version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with power closer to 300 horsepower, about a 72-hp boost. It's also rumored to offer a sporty version of the X1 that may be called the X2.

2014 BMW 535d xDrive

Thu, 20 Feb 2014

I absolutely love to travel, but man, do I hate flying. Not the act of flying itself, but air travel in general - slogging through the airport, dealing with security, fighting with delays, only to finally be crammed like cattle into a too-small airplane seat where you're offered $8 sandwiches that are half-frozen. (Okay, it's not always that bad, but still.)
So when I was tasked with attending the launch for the 2015 Subaru WRX STI in Carmel, CA, I had a choice to make. I could fly into San Francisco and find my own way down to Carmel, or I could grab a turbo-prop out of SFO and fly directly into Monterey. And since you're reading about all of this in a car review, it's pretty obvious which option I chose.
The current BMW 5 Series isn't a new car, despite receiving a couple of updates for the 2014 model year. But what is new is the 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline six-cylinder engine found underhood, borrowed from the larger X5 xDrive35d and also seen in the upcoming 740Ld xDrive. It's a honey of an engine, and here in the 5 Series, it makes for a truly first-class experience.
