The BMW 8 series was the first super car of the 1990s.  Gorgeous interior, V12 power, suspension designed for high speed touring and exterior styling that was immediately recognized as superb and still looks advanced today.

The timing of it introduction was unfortunate.  An economic downturn, combined with sharply rising gas prices had to impact the most expensive car in the showroom -- a car costing nearly one hundred thousand dollars.  Just over 7000 were sold in North America during the production run and savvy collectors have been tucking them away ever since.

I've had this example for three years.  It runs and drives, but is a collection of weekend projects.  Fortunately, there is an outstanding users group that has tackled and documented the fixes.  If you can read and ask questions and know how to use a wrench, you can correct the faults and have one exceptional automobile.

Since owning the car, I've upgraded the tires, installed a new thermostat and fan clutch, and removed the old stereo.  I had the driving computer display totally rebuilt so it works as it should.  I drive it on sunny weekend days enjoy the sophistication and power it offers.

Here are some examples of what's to fix.  This is not a comprehensive list, but will give you an idea of the level of work required.

Water leak some where at firewall.
Transmission fluid leaks (user group says this is common, requires re-tightening all hoses).
Headlights locked in open position.
Repair driver door handle.
Replace brake pads (I have the parts).
Needs new headliner.
Install modern stereo.

I am moving a fair distance, so my projects have to go.  For the right person, the car is an appreciating classic that will reward a devoted owner who enjoys working on cars.  Low opening bid and no reserve, so a serious bidder will take it home.  Title in my name is ready to be signed

TERMS:  Please read carefully, your bid indicates you have agreed to all of the following.  Of course the project is sold AS IS, WHERE IS with absolutely no warranty. It's garaged in Terre Haute, Indiana, about fifteen minutes north of Exit 11 off Interstate 70. The buyer will have full responsibility for taking possession.  A non-refundable deposit of $500 US must be received within 48 hours of the end of the auction. Payment in full must be received within five calendar days after the close of the auction and must be removed within fouteen calendar days.

BMW M3 and M4 will rock 430 hp from twin-turbo six with standard manual [w/video]

Wed, 25 Sep 2013

We're not sure which spec we're most intrigued by for the new BMW M3 and M4: the twin-turbo six-cylinder with 430 horsepower and "far beyond" 369 pound-feet of torque, the 3,300-pound curb weight or the standard six-speed manual transmission with automatic throttle blipping on downshifts. That engine is fitted with both Valvetronic and Double-Vanos, twin-wire arc-spray coating in the cylinders instead of liners to save weight, a track-ready cooling system with additional radiators, a forged crankshaft, dry-sump lubrication and a magnesium oil sump. BMW says its "high revving concept" has a redline beyond 7,500 rpm.
In the M4, it will be pulling a coupe with "a weight of just under 1,500 kilograms," which is 3,300 pounds to you and me. That number is said to include no driver and 90 percent fuel, but we're still waiting on the exact number and specs. BMW says it's "around 80 kilograms lighter than a comparably equipped predecessor model," putting the power-to-weight ratio at something like 7.68 pounds per horsepower at the same time as it helps reduce fuel consumption by 25 percent. The use of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) for the roof, drive shaft (with no center bearing), trunk and front strut brace, and forged aluminum for suspension components, have aided in the weight loss. This time around, the sedan - the M3 - will also get a CFRP roof.
The default option will be a six-speed manual.

Alex Zanardi back in the driver's seat with BMW

Tue, 21 Jan 2014

If there's ever been an inspirational story in the pantheon of motor racing history, surely it's that of Alessandro Zanardi. The Italian driver worked his way up the motor racing ladder, making it into Formula One and winning two CART championships for Chip Ganassi Racing back before the series re-merged into IndyCars. Tragedy struck in 2001 when he lost both his legs in a crash at the Lausitzring in Germany, but rather than accept his fate, Alex pushed on. Fitted with prosthetic limbs, he learned to drive a racing car with hand controls and got back in the driver's seat.
Zanardi drove for BMW in the European Touring Car Championship and then in the World Touring Car Championship that replaced it, landing on the podium several times despite his physical disadvantage. He left racing in 2009 to train for the Paralympics, winning two gold medals in London, but Alex apparently couldn't shake the racing bug. BMW modified one of its M3 DTM racers with hand controls for him to test later that year. And now he's returning to motor racing full time.
BMW has just announced that Zanardi will be driving a Z4 GT3 in the Blancpain Sprint Series, the successor to the FIA GT Series and short-distance counterpart to the Blancpain Endurance Series. The car has been modified with the hand controls the Bavarian automaker's racing department fitted to the aforementioned M3 DTM and will be fielded by the ROAL Motorsport team with which Alex challenged for the European Touring Car Championship last decade.

BMW to offer carbon fiber wheels in a year or two

Sun, 23 Feb 2014

The Citroën SM sat on the first set of production glass fiber and resin wheels in 1972 when parent company Michelin developed the exotic hoops in order to take the SM rallying. It wasn't until 2008 that we got the first all-carbon-fiber wheel for passenger cars in the form of a prototype model from Weds Sports in Japan that remained a prototype. Australian company Carbon Revolution followed that a year later with its CR-9 all-CF wheel, first introduced on the Shelby Ultimate Aero and now available for independent purchase for about $15,000 per set. BMW could be the first OEM to offer entire wheels in carbon fiber reinforced plastic in two years.
The wheels - either all-CFRP or using a CFRP rim and alloy spokes - were shown off during BMW's Innovation Days in Munich and are products of the development work done on its i-branded cars. The full-CFRP wheel is 35-percent lighter than a forged alloy wheel, the hybrid alloy and CFRP wheel is 25-percent lighter, making for a decent drop in unsprung rotating weight. As demonstrators during a tech day the wheels aren't yet in the pipeline for production and EU approval, but an article in Auto Express claims that they could be on the market as soon as two years from now.
Other possible parts include a full carbon fiber steering wheel and propeller shaft, the latter of which is coming as a single-piece component on the new M3 and M4. BMW is also talking up its use of secondary carbon fiber - waste material from i3 and i8 production - that can be used for items like IP support structures, seat frames and spare wheels in place of traditional metals like aluminum and magnesium. There's an excerpt of the Innovation Day press release below with more details.
