You are looking at a rare BMW X5 4.8is, this is the X5 model made before they came out with the X5 M so you know it is super sporty with lots of horsepower.  Original price on this was over $70k, you can own it for a fraction of the price.  The X5 4.8is has a non-turbo 355-horsepower V8, which makes it extremely fast.  The X5 also has anti-lock brakes with a brake-assist feature for surer panic stops—and traction control and anti-skid systems.  Safety items include front-seat side airbags and front/rear head-protecting side-curtain airbags.  Nifty touches include automatic-up power windows and rear windows that lower all the way. Big outside mirrors fold flat against the front door glass to prevent costly damage to them in tight spots.   Nicely located front cupholders have a sliding cover, and all doors have handy storage pockets, although the covered front console storage bin is small. There's no need to grope for the outside hood release lever because a handy small release lever pops out of the top of the grille area when the inside hood release is activated. This feature is especially appreciated in pouring rain.  Exterior of the car is in good condition for a 8 year old car with typical wear and tear marks for a car of this age, but no dents and very minor scratches, I pointed the biggest one out in one of the pictures...on a scale of 1-10 the exterior would be a 7.  The interior has no rips or tears and I keep OEM BMW seat covers on the front year round so they look like new.  I would rate the interior as a 8.5.  Also, I have fairly new carpet floor mats as well as the rubber ones for winter, all in great condition.  X5 has 20" chrome wheels in great condition with very few marks on them.  Rear tires are pretty new with only 8k miles on them, the front are starting to show some wear so I would guess less than 5k miles left on them.  Has after market cool air intake.  Recent services include oil change, replacement of the mechtronic sleeve, new transmission fluid, and a new coolant reserve tank...all services performed by the local BMW dealership.  If you would like any additional pictures please, just ask.  Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs, but I would be happy to help with any arrangements. There is no reserve on this car so you could end up with a steal compared to what else is listed on ebay.

BMW mulled ten, eight, and six-cylinder engines for i8 before going hybrid

Wed, 09 Oct 2013

There's little doubt that the 2015 BMW i8 is one of the most radical and groundbreaking performance cars this industry has seen in a long time. From its unique carbon-intensive construction to its 1.5-liter, three-cylinder and electric motor plug-in powertrain to its concept-car appearance, the flagbearer for BMW's new i venture challenges the very notion of what it takes to be a supercar.
Yet apparently the i8 almost didn't do that at all. Yes, it probably still would've had innovative assembly techniques, serious performance and come-hither bodywork, but according to a new report in the Telegraaf, it was very nearly a much more conventional beast, drawing its power from a V10 engine. According to the report, that line of development never got much beyond the drawing board, but BMW engineers then shifted their focus to both V8 and six-cylinder motivation, going so far as to build prototype cars. The higher cylinder-count engines were eventually dropped altogether after BMW decided to turn the i8 into a hybrid, with the six-cylinder reportedly nixed due to heat management and weight issues. In the end, of course, BMW went with the PHEV powertrain that offers a total system output of 362 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque - plenty of thrust for this lightweight, all-wheel drive coupe while still enabling an incredible 94 miles to the gallon on the EU cycle. Regardless of how it turned out, it's still fascinating to think that BMW didn't have a much firmer conceptual idea of what it was after when it started the i8's development.
Here at Autoblog, we're genuinely thrilled about this new generation of greener hybrid super- and hypercars, a movement spearheaded by the i8, Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1. But even so, our inner-gearheads can't help but wonder what might have been had BMW pursued a more conventional i8, either in place of, or in addition to, the car they did build. What do you think? Have your say in Comments.

2015 BMW M3 squares off against Alpina D3 in gas vs. diesel throwdown

Sat, 26 Jul 2014

There was a time when diesel meant one of two things: This vehicle's owner either wants to save some money at the pump or needs to haul massive loads. It definitely did not mean that the owner of said machine wanted to drive fast, but that perception has slowly but surely been changing over the last several years, with automakers from Volkswagen and Ford to Audi and BMW offering spiced-up versions of their high-compression, turbocharged diesels.
It's that last automaker we mentioned that's the subject of the video you'll see down below. One bright-blue BMW M3 was procured by the Brits at Autocar, and it was lined up against a deep-black Alpina D3 (which we sadly can't buy in the US) in a spate of tests, including acceleration, stopping, sound and lap times on a closed circuit. The results, which we won't spoil for you, were enlightening, and were followed up by personal impressions from the man behind the wheel.
We know you're curious. All it takes to find out which of these 3.0-liter, twin-turbo-powered 3 Series variants came out on top is to scroll down below and watch. You know what to do.

2014 BMW 328i xDrive Gran Turismo

Thu, 24 Apr 2014

"The Ultimate Driving Machine" has been BMW's tagline for nearly 40 years. Launched in the 1970s, the marketing campaign was a stroke of genius by ad firm Ammirati & Puris, as the phrase helped differentiate the imported Bavarian cars from their fellow European rivals by subtly pointing out that Mercedes-Benz and Audi were offering luxury models, while BMW was selling sporty and youthful driving dynamics. The campaign worked - some would argue that stands among the most effective ad campaigns ever - and countless Baby Boomers embraced the brand's fun-to-drive image by taking delivery of the company's new models.
BMW still boasts that its vehicles are "The Ultimate Driving Machine" four decades later, but the brand is very different today. It offered just a few model lines in the mid-1970s, and only a handful of vehicles within. In 2014, the automaker offers an exhaustive range comprised of nearly a dozen lines with almost 50 different models. To survive and thrive, BMW has decided it must massively broaden its appeal.
One of the latest arrivals to BMW's ever-growing stable is the 2014 3 Series Gran Turismo. The five-door hatchback is best thought of as a smaller version of the company's 5 Series Gran Turismo built on stretched 3 Series platform that, in the case of this test car, shares the running gear of the 328i xDrive sedan. On paper, the five-passenger vehicle checks all the proper boxes with regards to performance, utility and economy. But does this family-focused 3 Series still deliver driving dynamics that qualify it for the title of Ultimate Driving Machine?
