Model Overview | |
The new LaCrosse is offered in three different trim levels--CX, CXL and CXS. The CX and CXL trims come with a new 255-horsepower, 3.0-liter V6, while the sportier, premium CXS gets a 280-hp, 3.6-liter V6. Both engines come mated to a very smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic transmission, including tap-shift manual control, and have modern cast-aluminum construction and direct-injection technology that makes them both more powerful and more fuel-efficient. Also, there's no requirement for premium fuel as in some luxury vehicles. Fuel economy estimates are 17 mpg city, 27 mpg highway with either engine and front-wheel drive. Most of the lineup comes with front-wheel drive, but the CXL offers an optional all-wheel drive system with electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD); the system sends more torque to the front or rear wheels as needed to get the best traction and control. The LaCrosse is built on a stiffer body structure, which helps improve handling while still allowing a smooth, absorbent ride. A rather conventional suspension layout, with MacPherson struts and a stabilizer bar in front and a multi-link setup in back, combines with variable-effort rack-and-pinion steering and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes to provide good all-around performance. CXL and CXS models get upgraded variable-effort steering. Standard safety features on all LaCrosse models include GM's StabiliTrak stability control, plus driver and front passenger side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags that cover front and rear occupants. Rear-seat side thorax bags are optional. With an overall size that's at the top-end of mid-size but not as barge-like as full-size executive cars, the LaCrosse should be a good choice for those who plan to carry adults in the rear seats. While the interior is spacious and well-appointed, the design of the new instrument panel will find the most attention. With a new style and flowing lines that wrap from the door panels around through the instruments, accented by dark woodgrain and contrast stitching, this Buick feels more detailed inside than either Buicks of the past or other luxury-brand models. Soft leather surfaces, along with smoked chrome and wood trim, help support the upscale feel throughout the cabin. The new LaCrosse covers a pretty wide difference in price and equipment depending on the trim. The base CX comes with nearly everything traditional Buick buyers might want, such as air conditioning, a power driver's seat, tilt/telescopic steering, cruise control, heated mirrors, keyless entry and a CD sound system with XM Satellite Radio and steering-wheel controls. The CXL model adds extras like remote start, a universal remote, dual-zone climate control, a Bluetooth phone interface, leather power heated seats and fog lamps. Then at the top of the line, the CXS steps up to perforated leather upholstery, along with more extras like a heated steering wheel, keyless start, ultrasonic park assist, a power rear sunshade, ground illumination, Harman Kardon audio and a 12-volt power outlet. If there's budget left over, the options list for the CXS is heaped with high-tech goodies. Examples include a Head-Up Display, a navigation and entertainment system with 40-gigabyte hard drive and adaptive forward lighting. |

Buick to add more GS models?
Fri, 29 Nov 2013Buick may not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of performance automobiles, but fans of the brand know what letters to look for. If you believe the reports, there's a new GNX and Grand National on the way, but in the meantime, Buick may offer more GS models to fill the void.
Currently, the Regal is the only model available as a GS (pictured above), packing the same 259-horsepower turbo four as the Regal Turbo but enhanced with key suspension, brakes and rolling-stock upgrades. As Car and Driver notes, similar upgrades could easily be applied to the Verano and LaCrosse, although maybe not the Encore or Enclave crossovers. Of course, Buick would still have to steer clear of Cadillac's Vsport line, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a little room to play.
Buick version of Equinox/Terrain CUV spied testing... with autonomous gear?
Wed, 12 Jun 2013Let's get the most pressing bits of this story out of the way right off the bat: What we see here appears to be a new compact crossover from Buick. According to the spy photographer, this machine may be a little bit smaller on the outside than the current Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain 'utes, which makes sense since recent rumors suggest GM's small crossovers will migrate to a new platform that will mark a convergence between the automaker's Delta (Chevy Cruze, Buick Verano) and Theta (Equinox, Terrain) platforms. This Buick would likely use this new D2UX platform.
We've been expecting Buick to unleash a crossover to slot between the very small Encore and the very large Enclave, and various rumors have indicated that the model may be known as either the Anthem or Envision. It's worth mentioning that Buick had planned, back in 2009, to release a vehicle in the compact CUV market, but abandoned those plans after a particularly poor reception.
And now for something completely different... Take another look at the spy shots above, and pay special attention to the cylindrical device mounted to the vehicle's roof. We can't say for sure what it is, but our spy photographer opines that it looks quite a bit like the 360-degree Lidar camera equipment used by Google for its autonomous cars. Is General Motors working with Google on autonomous car technology? We don't know, but you can definitely consider us intrigued.
1969 Chevrolet Chevelle vs 1987 Buick GNX in Generation Gap showdown
Wed, 15 Oct 2014Generation Gap generally tries to adhere to a theme for each episode, and for the final video from the Lingenfelter collection, the series might have its best idea yet - limited-production muscle cars from General Motors.
On one side you get a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle COPO, and it's an absolute sleeper. Other than the SS wheels, this classic coupe looks practically bone stock, at least until the engine fires up. Under the hood is a 427-cubic-inch (7.0-liter) V8 making a claimed 425 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. This was the sole year for the COPO package on the Chevelle, and Chevy only made about 323 of them.
The Chevelle's challenger is almost as rare and arguably just as cool. The 1987 Buick Grand National GNX looks just as mean today as when new. It eschews a traditional muscular V8 in favor of a 3.8-liter turbo V6 making a claimed 276 hp and 360 lb-ft, although that number is supposedly a bit underrated. Also, just 547 examples of the GNX version were ever built making it quite a collector's item too.
