The Rainier is available only in the short-wheelbase (113-inch) configuration--no seven-passenger stretch version will be offered. It comes loaded with such standards as leather seating, OnStar, heated front seats with memory, dual-zone climate control, and blue-on-silver-finished instrument faces. In addition to the more-than-adequate standard 275-horse Vortec 4200 DOHC I-6, the Rainier is available with the torquier 290-horsepower Vortec 5300 OHV V-8. It's the only short-wheelbase GM midsize SUV fitted with the V-8 so far and should make the Rainier a pleasant rig for towing midsize trailers up to 6700 pounds.Standard Bilstein gas shocks, self-leveling pneumatic rear suspension, and four-wheel vented discs hold up their end of the deal. Buyers get a choice of rear drive with traction control or on-demand all-wheel drive. Not since the '96 Roadmaster has Buick had a RWD V-8 towing vehicle in its stable.Buick tuned the Rainier's suspension for less harshness and more compliance; it's no Park Avenue in the ride department, but the engineers have managed to exorcise most of the truck jounce without compromising driver control. While turn-in could be even crisper with the standard 17-inch Michelins, the Rainier's rack-and-pinion steering is fairly precise and nicely weighted. The cabin is luxury-car quiet at speed, courtesy of extra sound-deadening materials as well as acoustic laminated side glass and windshield that other GM T360 models don't get.Buick customers (and dealers) will welcome the Rainier, if for no other reason than it's nice to see a V-8-powered model back in the lineup.

GM laying off 510 amidst slow Cadillac, small car sales

Wed, 12 Nov 2014

General Motors is laying off about 510 workers from two factories beginning in January, and it could be months before the automaker needs some of that latent capacity to come back on line. A combination of poor sales and high dealer inventories are prompting the cutbacks, according to Automotive News.
The largest changes come at GM's Lansing Grand River plant, where the Cadillac ATS and CTS are made. An entire shift of about 350 workers is being laid off, but the automaker hopes to find positions for some of them at other nearby factories. The decision leaves just a single shift building vehicles there. According to Automotive News, the move is partially spurred by Johan de Nysschen's plan to make Cadillac a more exclusive brand.
The lost shift will likely return for production of the next-generation Chevrolet Camaro at the plant, according to the report, but GM isn't saying when that will be. A previous announcement from the Canadian Auto Workers union indicated that the Oshawa, Ontario, factory would lose the coupe in late 2015 or early 2016.

Updated Buick LaCrosse, Regal to debut at New York Auto Show

Tue, 26 Feb 2013

Judging by the spy shots we saw last week for the 2014 Buick LaCrosse and 2014 Buick Regal, we knew it wouldn't be much longer until we saw both sedans receive a grand debut. Today, Buick confirmed to Autoblog both cars will be introduced at the New York Auto Show next month, but no further information has yet been released about either model.
Having been on the market for an extra couple years, the changes to the LaCrosse appear to be more significant than those coming for the Regal, but both will be getting refreshed exterior designs as well as updated interiors. The Regal's new face brings it more in line with the all-new Encore and the restyled Enclave, while the LaCrosse should get a more distinctive, upscale appearance.
Both cars will be introduced exactly a month from today, and we'll be there to bring you all the coverage.

Next-gen LaCrosse, Cascada convertible coming to Buick showrooms in 2016

Wed, 23 Jul 2014

It's difficult to overstate how significant the post-bankruptcy years have been for General Motors' Buick brand. Arguably the most improved American automaker, Buick has rounded out its range with an excellent compact in the Verano, a well-balanced midsizer in the Regal and a segment-busting mini-CUV, with the Encore.
Seeking to keep that momentum going, the next several years will see the brand address a trio of its most obvious issues. First and foremost will be a replacement for the aging LaCrosse, a vehicle whose only bit of attention since its 2009 debut was a very light refresh in 2013.
According to Automotive News, we should expect the next-generation LaCrosse to arrive late next year or early in 2016, as a 2016 model. AN expects big design changes, as Buick attempts to further the LaCrosse from its popular platform-mate, the Chevrolet Impala. The changes won't be so radical, though, as to do away with its front-drive architecture, as the latest version of the Epsilon platform will underpin the next LaCrosse. The 3.6-liter V6 is likely to carry on, although a smaller, budget-minded offering is also extremely likely (we'll eat our hat if it's not the 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder from the Regal, Verano and Cadillac CTS et al.).
