Up for auction is a one of a kind custom 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-door hardtop/convertible. Featured on the cover of Rod & Custom Magazine, October 2012, with a multi-page article. Look at the pictures, this is a true hardtop/convertible where the hardtop has been expertly cut off and then refitted to the car so that it lifts off, creating a convertible. The bodywork to accomplish this took months and to most observers it is nearly impossible to detect. Careful cutting and fitting conceals the parting lines under the stainless window trim. When the top is removed, custom made spears connect the window trim to disguise the fact that a top fits there.

The interior is marine grade vinyl, pearl white with orange piping and pleated inserts on the seats, all tastefully done. Once again, check out the pictures both here and in R&C to see how sophisticated this combination looks. Because this is a driver, not a showboat, the marine vinyl will withstand exposure to the elements. The trunk is finished to match the interior with a compartment to store things out of sight.

This car was originally purchased as a solid western car which had been hot rodded. There was minimal rust, the body was solid and mostly complete. The car has had a complete make-over. It took a couple years to locate and purchase all the missing parts and reassemble everything. The car is nosed and decked and the hood is punched with 200 louvers. The interior was updated. The engine is a solid running 350 with a Muncie 4-speed and 3.08 gears. The exhaust note is throaty. The tires are new Coker wide whites mounted on chrome rims. It's been lowered with shorter springs and dropped spindles up front and lowering blocks in the rear. The stance you see is the way the car rides. All glass is new and is factory tinted. After all the bodywork and custom work was finished, the car was painted House of Kolor Sunset Orange with an accenting white pearl, all covered with a flat clear to give it a sheen, not a shine. It makes for easy maintenance, cleaning is a breeze.

This is a hard running, nice riding, fun cruising car that gives you the best of both worlds...a hardtop (Chevy's classiest body) when you want or need protection from the elements...and a convertible (the most desirable body style) when you want that open-air, sun-drenched cruiser. Cruise in style either way, bang the gears, listen to the exhaust note and have an eternal smile on your ace. Make no mistake, this is a DRIVER not a trailer queen or showboat. It was built to be enjoyed, not admired from afar. It'll cruise all day at 70+.

Reserve is set at a price which reflects the desirability of this first of the Tri-5's and the uniqueness of the build. I'm listing this for a friend....the owner and builder. If you want specifics, feel free to contact him at 920-737-9551 (Randy).

Shipping is the responsibility of the successful bidder. Or pick it up in person and drive home...

Next-gen GM SUVs caught wearing new boxy bodies [w/video]

Wed, 15 May 2013

We recently drove the brand-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and found it to be vastly improved compared to the outgoing model. And now that The General's pickup trucks have been squared away, it's time to focus our attention onto their passenger-friendly companions, the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon (above).
Our spy photographers have passed along a huge smattering of photos (and a video), showing the new SUVs out testing. Both the short- and long-wheelbase models were spied, and while the overall shape of the vehicles hasn't changed all that much, we expect the updates to be substantial. In addition to new powertrain options, like GM's new small-block V8, we expect the interiors of both SUVs to get massive makeovers, providing better materials throughout their cabins and quieter, more refined environments. We even hear that some trick new suspension developments may be in store for upper-end models.
Visually, these spy shots allow us to see a couple of new details on the SUVs' front and rear fascias, including LED running lamps on the Yukon and some interesting LED taillamp treatments. Of course, the obvious third party missing from this set of photos is the Cadillac Escalade, but as we reported earlier, GM is working to further differentiate the 'Slade from the rest of the fullsize SUV lineup, and is working to make the new model "much less ostentatious."

More Corvette Stingray Factoids: Vanishing panel gaps and 26-mpg LT1

Thu, 28 Feb 2013

During January's Detroit Auto Show, we managed a longer than expected wandering tag-team interview with C7 Corvette chief engineering exec Tadge Juechter (pictured above), and LT1 engine boss Jordan Lee (pictured below). They are, quite honestly, two of the very nicest bigshot lads to ever walk the engineering corridors of an American manufacturer. Both are enthralled by what they're doing for a day job. So are we.
We've followed the pre-sale anticipation for the Chevrolet C7 Corvette Stingray like an Oreck vacuum yanking every speck of dirt from a well-trampled carpet. Everything is reportable and contains a grain of further knowledge about this dramatically important and cheered-for car, as it continues to be pressured into representing all that is superior about the American dream. The Corvette wears one heavy cloak.
So, most of what was talked about has been expertly reported already right here on Autoblog. But, looking through our notes again, both Jeuchter and Lee added facts to the buzzing mix.

GM recalling 250,000 SUVs over door electronics

Mon, 20 Aug 2012

After a door-fire investigation that dates back to February, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has officially announced a recall today that affects around 250,000 General Motors SUVs for a faulty driver's door module. The recall applies to the Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X from the 2006 and 2007 model years, as well as the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL for vehicles sold and/or registered in the Snow Belt.
Road salt use in these midwestern and northern states can lead to corrosion of the driver's door module on these GMT360 and GMT370 vehicles, which allows water to come in contact with the circuit board. If shorted out, the vehicle's power door locks and power windows will not work, and could possibly lead to overheating and, in some circumstances, a fire. No official word on how many total vehicles caught on fire, but back in June, 28 fires had been reported to the government agency. A fix for the problem is still being worked out, but all affected vehicle owners will be notified by GM.
