This car was built in Florida in 1993 by an mechanical engineer. It was the Cover Car of  The Month in YesterYears Chevy Magazine in July 1995 (have a copy). The story goes like this:

Bought from a colleagues sister who had not used the 6 cyl auto in seven years. Body was sanded, repairs made, and painted the original Erskine White color. New gray velour and vinyl interior was installed. The engine panels were redone, front disc brakes added, and new 456 rear installed. The guy had a real 427
L 88 from a 1968 Corvette in his garage that he had completely rebuilt, balanced and blue printed two years earlier. Engine and Muncie 21 were installed and this creature was woken up. Later on the carb was changed to a 750.

Only 216 L 88's were produced for Corvettes in 1967 - 1969. It was a full race motor with aluminum heads and manifold, high lift - long duration racing spec cam, forged premium alloy steel crankshaft, 850 carb. It was listed as 430 hp - but at approx. 1,000 rpm lower. It has been rated more like 550 hp +. Chevy purposefully low balled the hp. Compression was 12.5:1. It was built as a full race motor. Cars came radio, fan shroud, heater. They only wanted this in the hands or guys who were able to race it. The compression out of the cylinders is at 200 lb all around - testimony to the 12.5 comp.

The casting number is 3935439, but the assembly plant and partial VIN are no longer there - it was apparently shaved off when the motor was rebuilt

The same years Chevy offed another 427 with 435 ho. That was the tri power, non aluminum, non cam motor. Compression was 11.0:1 Thats what most are and the way GM wanted it to be. The 435 was at full rpm.

In 1997 it was sold to another guy in Florida. A few years later it became a resident of New Jersey. The car was covered and sitting in a garage for at least three years when I bought it.

I bought it and have done some significant work to it within the past year. So here is the update:
  • New Hooker Headers
  • New 308 gears and carrier
  • New front shocks and springs
  • New battery
  • Newly studded block
  • New radio
  • Complete set of new gaskets - removed motor due to pan leak and just did everything - head, water pump, intake.
The whole rear end of the car was just recently painted. When I bought the car it had a 1' x 4" parking lot idiot dent on the lower part of the right quarter panel. The paint matched up very well with the 20 year old paint - which is in nice condition (little patina going on). Repainting the rest of the car would be very reasonable.

I drive this car as often as I can and as it should be driven. However I do not beat on it. Not laying tracks, power shifting, etc. Keep RPM under 3,700. I have the original glove box door and will replace.

The only thing I can think of that it really needs are hood springs. Hood sits up in the back - can push down. I just haven't gotten to it.

Some people are going to think the L-88 is a clone. I've seen the intake ports, had to get correct gasket for the intake - gasket set had only the standard. Other knowledgeable people have checked it out and they say yup.

However, it really didn't matter to me when I bought it. I wasn't looking to use the motor to rebuild a Vette or to race it. Would have kept the 456's if I want to tear into it. Whatever. It is just a brute. Favorite muscle I have ever owned.

If you have any questions you can reach me at (732) 284-6599 (on est - so please not too late). Probably a good idea to call before placing a bid anyway.

The car is available locally and I reserve the right to take it off if sold that way.

Thanks for looking.

2014 Chevrolet SS makes its live debut

Sat, 16 Feb 2013

Chevrolet showed off the new 2014 SS in an airport hangar last night, its first rear-wheel-drive performance sedan in the US since the Impala SS from 1997. We'll have more to say about the SS later today, but this is the sedan that Chevrolet sees as the final piece in restoring its performance credentials. For those of you looking for a manual transmission, however, that wish will go unfulfilled - at least for now: the only two options buyers will have are the color and whether or not they want a sunroof.
We'll work on getting some more angles (in better light) today at Daytona International Speedway, but with fans seeing the car for the first time, we don't hold out much luck of getting a clear shot. So for now, enjoy the high-res gallery above.

Chevy exec confirms SS production model reveal at Daytona on Feb 16

Wed, 06 Feb 2013

The 2014 Chevrolet SS will make its racing debut for the 2013 Daytona 500, but the production version of the car will get its official unveiling on February 16 in Daytona, a week before The Great American Race. According to a report by Automotive News, the reveal has been confirmed by Jim Campbell, Chevy's US vice president of performance and motorsports. With the departure of the Dodge Charger, the new Chevrolet racecar will be the only competitor to feature a V8, rear-wheel-drive layout in both street and NASCAR form.
NASCAR fans will be able to see the new fullsize performance-oriented sedan on display in the festivities leading up to the Daytona 500, but the car won't go on sale until later in the year. The Australian-built Chevy SS will be a low-volume performance model, and it will be priced above the 2014 Impala, which starts at $27,535.

Chevy Sonic shreds like a skateboard

Tue, 19 Mar 2013

Despite the fact that the 2013 Chevy Sonic is a fun, plucky little thing - especially in ever-so-slightly hotter RS guise - it is not, in fact, a skateboard. But don't tell that to rapper Theophilus London.
In General Motors' latest spot for the Chevrolet compact, London needs to make a quick run to the store for some milk. And even though, once again, the Sonic is not a skateboard, it ollies, pops and gets air because, you know, it's just so much fun to throw around.
If this video looks familiar to you, it's because this is the full ad that we first got a preview of in Chevy's longer, full-line spot, where the brand's "Find New Roads" tagline was introduced. Scroll down to see this dedicated Sonic spot, along with the older ad, and remember, the Sonic is still - still - not a skateboard.
