Amelia Island 2013: Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray from concepts to split windows

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

While this year marks 60 years of the Chevrolet Corvette, the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance focused on one of the coupe's most sought after models, the 1963 Sting Ray. General Motors design boss Ed Welburn was on hand to show off the all-new C7 Corvette, but even the hard-edged styling of the 2014 Stingray couldn't take away from the beautiful 1963 models sitting out on the field.
In addition to the original Sting Ray and the 1959 Sting Ray Concept, some of the other classic 'Vettes included "Big Tank" racecars, an interesting cutaway coupe, a right-hand-drive Z06 and the attention-grabbing 1963 Corvette Rondine by Pininfarina. Another impressive Corvette was the 1964 Corvette XP-819 rear-engine prototype. Owner Mike Yager had the car finished as a driving chassis for this year's show, but promises the car will be back to its original glory in time for next year's event.

Corvette Stingray Shooting Brake under consideration by Callaway [w/poll]

Mon, 18 Mar 2013

Callaway has released a few renderings of a design study for a shooting brake version of the C7 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The company says it wants to create a long-roof version of America's sports car to offer buyers more interior room and a vehicle with "unique style." The company says it will use structural carbon fiber for the new body bits, which suggests the conversion shouldn't add too much more weight to the Corvette. Along with a few mechanical tweaks, the Callaway Corvette Stingray AeroWagon could breeze past the 200 miles per hour barrier.
Provided that they get enough interest, Callaway estimates they will be able to effect the changes on the Chevrolet for around $15,000, and says the conversion work should be available through its network of dealers. You can check out the brief press release below for more information, or head over to the Callaway site to plunk down a deposit - but before you do, we want to know... do you find this C7 wagon interesting? Vote in our poll below, then feel free to leave a few lines in Comments.

DESCRIPTION
Chevrolet rolled into 1957 with a head of stream off of the two previous year's sales! The newly designed Bel Air continues to be one of the most iconic of American collector cars yet today! One of the unique offerings was the 2-door Nomad wagon. At a glance, it was practical for larger families needing the extra space, but having just the two doors made it a rather tough sell for Chevrolet dealers, even with the desired upscale Bel Air trim. For this reason, they were made in fewer and fewer production numbers throughout the 1955-1957 production run. By 1957, just 6,103 were delivered to dealerships making them the rarest of all production Bel Air ever produced, and sought after today!

We are very excited to offer this 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad finished in code correct India Ivory & Matador Red and all new correct Black & Red cloth/vinyl interior! Features of this example include 283ci V8 engine fitted with the factory Rochester 2-Jet carburetor which is attached to a Powerglide automatic transmission! Options include power brakes, power steering, polished wheel covers with spinners, brand new Coker whitewall radial tires measuring 235/75R14 in size, dual exterior mirrors, tinted front windshield, and door handle paint protectors!

This example has some modern upgrades hidden underneath its stock exterior appearance! This includes a front & rear ventilated disc brakes, dual exhaust that includes polished stainless steel Magnaflow mufflers, California one-piece front bumper, and upgraded AM/FM/Cassette player fitted in the stock dash location! It features a magnificently solid body, all new motor mounts, all new front end bushings, tie rods, and ball joints, new rear leaf springs, rear gas shocks, and more! Inside, you will find just about everything new! The seating upholstery & padding, headliner, floor carpeting, sun visors, door panels, and rear sail panels are all in as-new condition!

Here are the specifics on the body codes and tag numbers:
Style code: 57-1064DF
Paint code: 819D
Trim code: 697
Engine date stamp: F720F

It runs and drives with great ease with the favored power options . It sounds great as well! Finding Bel Air Nomads that have not fallen into the hands of custom car builders is a very difficult task these days! Most on the market will have significantly modified drive trains and major custom upgrades. Please feel welcome to call with additional questions, or to schedule an opportunity to review this rare car in person! Thanks for looking!
