Up for auction is a one-of-a-kind Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe. The changes I made were done for reliability, and drive-ability. The frame is the only thing that has 117,000 miles on it, since all else has been changed or upgraded. I am the second owner of this car. I HAVE ALL THE RECEIPTS, AND LOG BOOK, SHOWING EACH AND EVERY CHANGE THAT I MADE.

The engine was installed in the Spring of 2006. It is a 383 stroker Small Block Chevrolet, only has about 12K miles on it. It was built to my specifications by an engine shop in Portland, Oregon. I personally verified every clearance and dimension prior to building it. It has a 9.33 compression ratio, so I could run 87 octane while cruising on the highway. The quench area has been optimized so it wouldn't be octane sensitive. The heads are Air Flow Research, with 195CC chambers. The intake is an Edelbrock Super Ram, which flows significantly more air than the tubular runners, which is why I went with it, along with an Edelbrock 52MM throttle body. It also has Edelbrock tubular headers, which have Jet Hot coated. It has a GM serpentine setup from a 1992 Camaro. There are two 16" Ramcharger electric fans mounted, behid the just-new radiator with a lifetime warranty.  The engine does not smoke, nor burn any oil.
As far as the drive-train goes, the transmission was built up locally by Govednik Transmissions. It was built to Bruce WE4s specifications for the Buick Gran National cars. This includes extra overdrive bands, clutches, and ball-bearing pieces to replace the plastic ones. It has an 11" converter, stall speed listed as 2400-2600, purchased from there also. This only has about 14K miles on it. The car has a Denny's 3" steel driveshaft. The original differential gears, which were 3.73, were replaced with 3.23 for better mileage while driving to car events. I still have the original ones and carrier also.
The interior is in great conditions, with NO rips, tears, burns, or damage. I added a custom Autometer dashboard, since the original gauges are notorious for being inaccurate. I replaced the headliner just a few years ago also. All the power seats, windows, trunk, and locks work.
The car was cleaned and repainted within the last 10 years, also in the original color white enamel. There are no dents, rust, or major damage anywhere. It does have the usual minor nicks and scratches from use though. The windshield is only two years old, and the windows have been tinted, to the legal limits in Wisconsin; which means they aren't too dark for normal use! The stereo is a Pyle, 45 watt, 4-channel AM-FM, CD unit. I also mounted a 10" sub-woofer in the trunk, with a 200-watt amplifier for it. All the speakers have been upgraded from the stock ones.
The tank is a custom made one, that I designed, along with an aluminum welder. It holds 20.6 measured gallons, the stock being 17.5. It is smaller than the stock one, and bolts in the same location. It is angled slightly so all the gas will drain to the sump since the tank is baffled too. It has a custom-built in-tank sump and pump, which has a return line and vent. I mounted a spare pump, to the outside, to ease repair if the internal one goes out. You switch two lines, the power plug, and you're off again! If you wish to hide the tank, just paint it black and no one will be the wiser.
Lines have been run to a 10# Nitrous Oxide tank mounted in the trunk, and it has passed tech at my drag strip. A manual switch triggers it now, but an electronic controller is mounted, but I never got it connected. I also have a remote bottle opener which has not been mounted yet, but included.
As you can see, I built this car for reliability versus all-out power. It wouldn't take much to add more since the foundation is there. This car has only been driven in the summers, hence the low mileage on the drive-train. All the ball joints, brakes, bushings, etc, were replaced in the last 3 years, and an alignment done. The tires are only a few years old with low mileage, and were rated very highly by Tire Racks surveys a few years ago.

Dodge vs. Chevy tug-of-war taken to the extreme

Mon, 17 Dec 2012

They say "idle hands are the devil's playground," but said playgrounds grow to Disney-sized proportions when a pair of jacked-up trucks, two egos, a chain and an empty mall parking lot are involved. Proof of this is the video below, which shows a Cummins-powered Dodge Ram circa 2006 to 2008 chained tail-to-tail with what looks to be a gasoline-powered Chevrolet Silverado from the late 1990s or early 2000s.
We don't necessarily have to tell you who wins this battle, but we'll let you see for yourself the lengths the "winning" driver goes to prove his point. There's plenty of foul language in the video below, so beware that this might be Not Safe For Work, and not that we should have to tell you, but please, do not try this at home.

Subprime financing on the rise in new car sales, leasing too

Fri, 07 Dec 2012

We all remember the financial crisis that began several years back. At its core was a splurge of subprime lending for housing loans. The housing bubble burst, triggering a collapse of the mortgage-backed securities market. Apparently, those types of loans still exist in the automotive industry, and the market share for these types of "nonprime, subprime, and deep subprime," loans has grown 13.6 percent compared to the third quarter a year ago.
According to an Automotive News report, high-risk lending expanded to 24.8 percent of total loans in Q3, up from 21.9 percent for this time last year. As this level increased, average credit scores of borrowers dropped to 755, down from 763 a year ago. In that time, the average financing amount increased $90 per vehicle, to $25,963.
At 818, Volvo maintains the highest per-owner credit score, while Mitsubishi has the lowest, at 694. The highest rate of borrowers was at Toyota, with 14 percent of the market, followed by Ford with 13.1 percent and Chevrolet at 11.1.

Indian tuner turns Chevy Optra into Mustang 'Eleanor' replica

Fri, 03 Aug 2012

If you are a big fan of automotive oddities, this may come as a little treat. If you are a Shelby or Mustang diehard, prepare to have your sensibilities violated.
The master fabricators at BigDaddyCustoms are the minds behind what you see above. At first, it appears to be a slightly misshapen custom Mustang, modeled after "Eleanor" from Gone In 60 Seconds, but upon further examination, something appears to be amiss. In fact, the custom shop, based in India, has created an Eleanor replica grafted upon a lowly Chevrolet Optra. While it may take a second for the Optra to ring a bell, you should recognize its badge-engineered sibling, the Daewoo Lacetti, used on Top Gear.
We don't know what star would opt for the Reasonably Priced Car in Shelby's clothing, but it's clearly someone more concerned with the aesthetic than the performance credentials of this automotive mash-up.
