Offered here for your consideration and bids is a 1951 Chevy 5-window pickup vintage rod. It is quite a find with provenance. It received a complete body-off-frame modified restoration in 1968. The owner states the truck won the "Best of Show" trophy at the Frezno Autorama that year! The project was built by Mike Vukovich who was the brother of Billy Vukovich....who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1953 and 1954. He was killed in a chain-reaction crash while in the lead at the 57th lap of the 1955 Indianapolis 500. I discovered the truck in a garage where it had been rarely driven and stored since 1968! The owner got it started and it runs extremely smooth. He believes it may have only 4,000 to 5,000 miles since that time. It runs a vintage 302ci (balanced and blue-printed) Corvette engine with a manual transmission. The front axle has been dropped with anti-sway bars. Many parts are chromed throughout the vehicle: The entire tailgate, running boards, bumpers, grill, heater, headliner trim, seat frame, window moldings, Corvette steering column, plus many parts in the engine compartment. The steering column and steering wheel are early Corvette plus the back tail-lights. The truck sports chrome twin spots, a stock radio and period seat belts. Please notice the old-school radio antennae and bed rails. I am advised that back in 1998 the truck received a rebuilt carburetor, new fuel pump, new ignition switch plus a new starter. This rod is a real garage-find/time-capsule hot rod and remains in excellent condition. I did notice a scratch in the front passenger-side fender and a small puncture hole on the driver's-side seat bottom. New tires might be a good idea. Overall, the condition of the truck is remarkable. For additional information please phone Dave Henry at 805 705-4924. Pacific Standard Time please, California. Please review my Positive Feedback which is 100%. I have been in business since 2001. (SpokeMotors). I mainly market and sell antique, classic and performance vehicles plus Real Estate. I strive to describe vehicles accurately from my client's honesty and input which is deemed reliable, plus my observations and photographs. I will bend over backwards to have a transaction go smoothly and be a positive experience. Your diligence to secure a physical inspection is welcomed and recommended. The vehicle is sold As-Is, Where-Is with a clear title and a Bill of Sale. A $500 non-refundable deposit through PayPal is required for this transaction. Thanks for your interest and please visit my other auctions. Please click on the youtube video below to see the truck in action.
On Jan-10-14 at 09:28:32 PST, seller added the following information: The Grandson of Mike Vukovich who built this truck, discovered the original 1st Place in Class Trophy for the 1969 (not 1968) Fresno, California Autorama! (The owners had thought the truck had won Best of Show, but now know the vehicle won 1st in Class). In any case, the truck is an outstanding find. I placed several photos of the award on my web site: spokemotors. Please check them out. Please note: When I composed the photographs and video of the vehicle it had just been moved out of the garage covered in years of dust. The owners cleaned it off the best of their ability in a very short time. You can imagine how this truck will come-up once it is properly detailed. |

Diesel Power finds the ultimate modified oil-burner
Sat, 24 Aug 2013For nine years, Diesel Power magazine has run the Diesel Power Challenge, this year's grindfest being "a week-long torture test that features seven events, nine trucks, 8,000 horsepower, and nearly 15,000 pound-feet of torque." The road to being crowned "the most powerful truck" starts with a dyno run, and then continues through the completion of a CDL-style obstacle course, an eighth-of-a-mile drag race while towing a 10,000-pound trailer, a quarter-mile drag race without a trailer, a fuel economy test in the mountains and finally a sled-pulling test through a 300-foot-long packed-mud pit.
What kind of trucks get into such a fight? Last year's winner, for instance - who upgraded his truck this year to prove he didn't "luck into the win" - drives a 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty with a 6.4-liter Power Stroke V8 upgraded with a custom intake, Elite Diesel triple turbos and a two-stage nitrous system. Another competitor has a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins inline-six, upgraded with Garrett turbos, dual-stage nitrous, a seven-inch exhaust stack and twin fans built into the bed to cool the Sun Coast Omega transmission. The numbers on that truck: 1,255 horsepower, and 2,063 pound-feet of torque at the wheels. Naturally, as the image above might suggest, things don't always end well.
You'll find all five videos covering this years challenge below. A scene in the dyno video sums it all up perfectly: a competitor leaves his nitrous on too long and the crew is treated to some ominous poppings, he leans out the window, throws both hands up and shouts, "Amer'ca!"
C7 Corvette makes inaugural ad appearance in Chevy's first spot with new slogan
Mon, 11 Feb 2013Chevrolet's "Runs Deep" tagline has finally been run into the ground, replaced with the Bowtie brand's "Find New Roads" slogan that's part of parent General Motors' plan to unify its everyday brand's marketing efforts worldwide. The new Chevrolet campaign was ushered in on prime time last night during the Grammy Awards on CBS, and the first spot, a 90-second full-line ad, also marks the first appearance of the 2014 Corvette Stingray in a commercial.
Being a full-line ad, the commercial is composed of vignettes centered on different vehicles in the brand's lineup. The all-new 2014 Impala also makes its first commercial appearance in dapper fashion, and time is spent on a skateboarding Sonic and a bouquet of brightly colored Spark hatchbacks driven by fashionable women. The ad starts and ends with Chevy's green halo car, the Volt, along with a young girl with her robotic dog (yes, really).
Chevrolet's "Runs Deep" campaign got off to a rocky start in the fall of 2010, but it did last for a couple of years with some tweaks. This new one, "Find New Roads" seems more intent on drawing new customers into the fold than the outgoing tagline, which seemed to play more toward the brand faithful. It admittedly reminds us more than a little the short-lived "Find Your Own Road" Saab motto (which, we note, was conceived while the Swedish brand was under GM's control), but no matter, we still think it's got more long-term potential than "Runs Deep."
Chevy monitors drivers' biometrics while experiencing new Corvette Stingray
Fri, 25 Oct 2013We tell you about what a car is like to drive every day, remarking on throttle response, steering weight and feedback, squat, dive, brake fade and a dozen or more other factors of performance. What we can't tell you, though, is what the car does to us - how its performance impacts us, physically. That's what makes this video series from Chevrolet so darn cool.
The Bow-Tie brand rented out Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, got several (very) different individuals together, strapped a bunch of sensors to their bodies to record biometric data ranging from heart rate to respiration to brain activity, and then handed them keys to the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The results are explained in a series of videos, devoted to each driver, showing how different people react to the Corvette's performance.
If, like your author, you're a nerd for medical science, this is going to be a fascinating set of videos. If not, it's still pretty cool to see how the body of someone with racing experience, like Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi, reacts to tracking a car like the Corvette Stingray compared to the owner of legendary Detroit barbecue joint, Slows BBQ. Take a look below for all six videos from the series, or hop over to the Corvette Vimeo channel for the interactive experience, where you can see all the different metrics.
