This 1986 Chrysler LeBaron Mark Cross edition convertible is a true survivor that has spent the last 28 years being very gently driven and cared for.  It was delivered to its original owner - a prominent Toledo businessman - at Valiton Motors of Toledo, Ohio on August 1 of that same year and was used primarily by his socialite wife in the summer months.  The body of the car is straight and clean and has never been rusted.  The only exception is some very slight bubbles that are just starting to form in the paint on the trunk lid by the LeBaron badge (shown in pictures).

It wears its original paint, which is in excellent condition with a lot of lustre and shine to it.  The car is light cream in color with a tan pinstripe and a tan convertible top.  The top is in good condition overall.  The motor work and the top raises and lowers well.  The stitching that surrounds the rear window is beginning to come undone because of the age of the threads and will need to be restitched (shown in pictures).  The convertible boot is in the trunk of the car and is in perfect condition. The original wire wheels are in excellent condition and the white wall tires have good tread life.  The brakes are in great working condition on the car.  All of the lights and gauges in the car work.

The car has cream-colored Mark Cross leather interior with a slightly darker tan dash.  The leather seats are the most comfortable car seats I have ever sat in.  There are no rips or tears in the leather, but there is some slight cracking to the leather, consistent with the age of the seats and the quality of the leather that was used in cars of the 1980s.  The dash has no cracks or blemishes.  The interior of the car is immaculately clean - the carpeting, the floor mats, the dash and the seats.  It has a power driver's seat that is full working order.  The AM/FM stereo/ cassette works, as does the cruise control.  As is often the case with cars of this vintage, the air conditioning does not blow cold as a result of having lost its charge.  But who cares... this is a convertible... it was made for top-down driving.

The original 2.2L Turbo engine is in good shape and has been checked by the local Chrysler dealership.  The carburetor was recently cleaned and they found everything else, including the turbocharger, to be in good working order.  The car starts right up and it does not leak and smoke.  The transmission is in great shape.  It shifts right into gear and has no clunking, slipping, or any other indications of wear.  The brakes are in good condition and work well.  The tires still have good tread life.  I just replaced the front axles on the car, which had worn from age.

This is a wonderful car in great condition and a beautiful example of the car that saved Chrysler.  I've tried to be honest about any issues that the car has, and to document them with photos here in the listing.  I'd be happy to answer any questions and will consider all fair and reasonable offers for the car.  That it has been garage-kept its entire life will come as no surprise to anyone who sees it in person.

FB Tuning debuts 400-hp carbon-bodied Chrysler Crossfire in Monaco

Wed, 30 Apr 2014

The Chrysler Crossfire was, suffice it to say, a matter of taste. Based on old Mercedes-Benz mechanicals, it included retro styling accents and an armadillo roofline. Some loved it, but there was clearly room for improvement - not to mention more sales - and that's just what Italian coachbuilder FB Tuning had to showcase at the Top Marques show in Monaco this year.
Called the FB-ONE, it's based on the Crossfire, which itself was based on the same R170 chassis as the first-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK. It packs the same 3.2-liter V6 as well, which FB claims to have tuned farther than anything Daimler-Chrysler ever managed with the same engine. Whereas the SLK32 AMG packed 354 horsepower and the Crossfire SRT-6 offered 330, the FB-One packs a nice, round 400 hp, which ought to be good for a 0-60 time of little over four seconds.
As you can see, that's not all they've done with FB-One. It's also been rebodied in carbon fiber, with gold accents, deep-dish alloys that look like they came out of a casino and the headlights from an Audi A8. Whether the result is your cup of tea likely depends, as it did with the Crossfire in the first place, on your own personal tastes, so check it out for yourself in the video below.

Chrysler 200 subtitles performance in latest round of advertising

Mon, 27 Oct 2014

Every once in a while, we come across a car video narrated in a foreign language and subtitled in English. They usually center on foreign-made automobiles, but this latest series of videos comes straight from Detroit.
Airing for the first time during's NFL broadcasts, these four commercials for the 2015 Chrysler 200 were produced by Wieden + Kennedy Portland - the same advertising firm that created the now-legendary Eminem spot for the last-generation 200.
Each clip in the "Ready to Take on the World" campaign highlights a different aspect of the American sedan and is narrated in Japanese, German or Swedish - each with English subtitles - associating the 200's Japanese level of quality, German performance and Swedish safety standards. But while the clips are ostensibly set in Japan, Germany and Sweden, Automotive News reports that they were actually filmed at home in the US.

Jeep Cherokee faces on-sale delay

Sat, 23 Mar 2013

A report in The Wall Street Journal looks at some of the obstacles to the 2014 Jeep Cherokee that go beyond its mootable yet "very contemporary" looks, almost all of them based on Fiat's financial position. Starting with that sheetmetal, in defense of it SRT president Ralph Gilles and Jeep design head Mark Allen said they wanted to "make sure the design still looks modern five years from now."
The WSJ piece doesn't cite longevity as a factor, instead saying that its features originated in a design for an Alfa Romeo, the transformation into a Jeep design meant allowing Chrysler get it to market more quickly and save "hundreds of millions of dollars" in engineering.
The need for Fiat to save money while it weathers the European situation has cut budgets for development, engineering and the pace of retooling the Toledo, Ohio plant to build the Cherokee. In a familiar case of snowballing at work, among the effects will be pushing back the Cherokee's volume sales date and delaying updates to some of Chrysler's other products.
