Up for auction is my Series One 1971 Datsun 240Z with VIN HLS3013523, making this car #13,523 to roll off the Datsun production line in 1970.  The date of manufacture was November of 1970.  Originally purchased by owner # 1 on December 21, 1971 from Le Man's Motors, Inc. in San Bernardino, California.  I am owner #2, and I purchased this car from the original owner in September of 2005.  During my ownership, I have come to know this Z quite well, both it's positives and negatives.

For a comprehensive understanding of this car's current condition, documenting all positives and negatives, please review all 185 photos with descriptions by clicking below:

I am strongly suggesting that you review all photos and descriptions in the photos linked above before bidding.

As an overview, I am including a number of photographs and descriptions in this auction as well.  The best thing about this 240Z is that, with it's California origins, it is virtually rust free.  Another positive is it's high level of originality.  Where I've replaced parts, I've tried to use OEM Nissan parts as extensively as possible.  The odometer reading of 85,593 is correct and represents original miles.  This Datsun starts easily and runs well.  Handling is very good, due in part to an extensive suspension refurbishment that included new KYB struts, Euro Spec. springs, and OEM rubber bushings.

The biggest negative is that, back in 1973, the car was involved in a low speed accident.  While stopped, the car was hit from the rear.  Subsequent repair work was not of the highest quality, and the paint has since cracked and faded in several areas .  The dash is cracked.  Coolant is weeping very slightly from head gasket to block exterior.  (For detailed pictures of any of these deficiencies, please view the extensive photo album by clicking on the link above.

Summation of work completed since my purchase (receipts for almost all):

  • 2005 - American Racing Libre wheels professionally refinished.

  • 2006 - Aftermarket turbo muffler.  Fuel pump.  OEM interior dome light.  Optima battery.  Headlight, foglight & parking light relays.  New rubber door gaskets.  New rubber trunk gaskets (inner and outer).  OEM fuel tank sending unit.  OEM fuel tank vent hoses with OEM grommets.  OEM water pump.  Replaced Series 1 metal fan with Series 2 plastic fan.  NGK spark plugs.  OEM heater hoses, "Y" connector & firewall grommets.  OEM upper & lower radiator hoses.  Thermostat, fan belt & oxygen pump belt.  Master cylinder, power brake booster, & brake fluid.  OEM inner rubber shift boot.  OEM coolant reducer hose.  OEM (Series 2) shift lever boot.  OEM heater valve, 3 way brass pipe & brass engine to heater fitting.  OEM engine trouble light.

  • 2008 - NGK plug wire set.  OEM brake booster hose.  Oil pressure sensor.  Z-Therapy fuel return lines and throttle return springs.

  • 2009 - Extensive suspension refurbishment (wire brushed and POR-15 or Zero-Rust treated), including:  (4) KYB struts.  (4)Euro Spec. Springs.  (4) Energy Suspension bump stops.  New U-joints on propeller shaft and half shafts.  New boots on half shafts.  OEM rear differential side seals, rear differential cover gasket & differential breather cap.  OEM radiator cap.  OEM speedometer cable seals.  OEM rear transverse link front bushings.  OEM spindle pins.  OEM rubber bushings throughout most suspension components.  280ZX electronic upgrade with E12-80 module, rebuilt ZX distributor recurved for 240Z, & MSD Blaster 2 coil.

  • 2010 - Professionally refurbished combination turn signal / high beam switch.  Parking light harness upgrade.  Original radiator was professionally re-cored.

Datsun to unveil second model later this month

Sun, 08 Sep 2013

Datsun, Nissan's new sub-brand for emerging markets, has announced plans to unveil its second model. Its first, the Go, was unveiled almost two months ago, and promised affordable, connected motoring for five in a handsome hatchback body. Datsun is following that up with a pair of new models for Indonesia.
The first of these two new vehicles will be shown on September 17 in Jakarta, eschewing the typical auto show debut. It's targeted at so-called "risers," the nickname for a group of highly aspirational customers in the Indonesian market. Datsun developed it locally with help from Nissan, and it'll cost under 100 million Indonesian rupiah (about $8,900 at today's rates).
We'll have the full boatload of information on the newest member of the Datsun family when it debuts on September 17. Scroll on to read the full press release from Datsun.

Fiat contemplating sub-brand to compete with Dacia, Datsun

Tue, 05 Feb 2013

You can add Fiat to the admittedly short list of automakers considering a low-cost brand to rival Dacia. The inexpensive Eastern European brand from Renault-Nissan has performed on the balance sheet like a premium model line, and the money the alliance is taking off the table is encouraging other players to deal themselves in. Pretty soon Nissan's Datsun sub-brand will join the Dacia party, going on sale in Russia, Indonesia and India and will claim even more rubles, rupiahs and rupees for the parent company. Volkswagen recently said it will make a decision this year on a budget line for the Chinese market. With the euthanasia of Lancia and plans to move the Fiat brand upmarket, company CEO Sergio Marchionne wonders aloud to Automotive News Europe whether there could be room for a new budget brand underneath Fiat.
We're told that the initiative has been in the idea box for five years and even moved to the stage of name considerations, like Innocenti, but worries about profit kept it from realization. If such a range were to be developed, Marchionne says it couldn't be built in Italy and stay within budget, and the company is "analyzing its manufacturing capacity outside of Europe to see if a low-cost brand is viable."

Meet the man who took a year sabbatical to drive his 1967 Datsun Fairlady Roadster

Tue, 28 Jan 2014

A quiet drive in the country can be the most relaxing thing in the world. What if it didn't have to end, and you could keep driving for a week, a month or even a whole year? That's what Scott Fisher is doing by taking a one-year sabbatical from work and driving his 1967 Datsun Fairlady Roadster around North America.
"I had owned a manufacturing business in Las Vegas for 16 years. I knew I needed to kinda' get out, and unwind, and get my mojo back," said Fisher.
Fisher's trip has covered over 30,000 miles through 44 states and 7 Canadian Provinces, and it is not over yet. He left from his home in Las Vegas, NV, last spring and drove to the Pacific. From there, he drove up the coast to the Canadian border and aimed the car for the Atlantic. He just posted on his blog about visiting the Nissan headquarters and museum in Franklin, TN, and his next stops are Mississippi and New Orleans, LA.
