1 Of 176 1971 Dodge Challenger Convertible 340 / 4 Speed / #'s Matching Rare !!! on 2040-cars

Year:1971 Mileage:11699
Location:

Nekoosa, Wisconsin, United States

Nekoosa, Wisconsin, United States

Up for auction first time ever. We have owned this 1971 Dodge Challenger for over 28 years. This is a numbers matching car, with complete rebuilt motor / trans.  It is a 340, 4 speed manual, 1 of 176  ...1971 CHALLENGER 340 convertibles total made. Of this number, we do not have the breakdown of how many were 4 speed manual transmissions verses automatic transmissions. We do have a general idea that only 1 of every 10 trans were a manual. This makes this particular convertible a very low production number just due to this.

IN ADDITION...This may be the only car ordered from the FACTORY to be made this specific way, with every high end R/T option available. In all of our years owning it and attending events, we have found no other originally factory ordered exactly the same.      The original owner had this car ordered with every option available to simulate an R/T convertible. ( Dodge did not produce any 1971 Challenger R/T convertibles).  This car has been fender tag decoded by Galen Govier and appraised in 1990.

This convertible also has a later scheduled production date in fender tag decoding. A Mopar mag featured a 1971 Challenger convertible, wondering if that was the last Dodge convertible made before discontinuing convertibles. This car has a later build date than the magazine Challenger featured. This car was certainly one of the last Dodge convertibles produced...possibly even the last ?  If you have credible information, please let us know, as it all adds value / uniqueness to this car.

This car went through an entire full professional MOPAR ONLY restoration to factory specs from 2007 to 2010. Months and years searching for close to perfection parts. Every restoration / replacement part is primarily an original, or from a reputable Mopar vendor, Year One, Legendary, etc.

The 340 numbers matching engine is completely restored. The motor is the correct color of Chrysler Blue, for that production date. The numbers matching transmission and rear end were also tore down and rebuilt to factory specs. Every nut and bolt is blasted and painted in the detailing. Attention and detail was to restore this car back to as original as the day it came off the assembly line in June of 1971. We have the receipts to prove no expense was spared in the professional restoration. We have books of photos depicting our baby being brought back to original factory specs.

Like many a Mopar, it had some after market modifications when we got it. I think we are the 4th owner of this car. The first owner that ordered this car contacted us when we had an ad in the newspaper to sell it back in 1990. He told us he ordered it special for his wife at the time through a local dealer. The person we bought the car from in 1986 had purchased it from someone other than the original owner.

Beautiful B5 Blue paint with new interior on original H6XW seat frames. New manual convertible top / glass and boot, new carpet, trunk mat, new door skins, and reproduction Mopar seat belts added. The door and rear interior panels were replaced and a brand new dash pad is in the box ( It was on back order at the time of restoration and needs to be installed). Original gauge cluster and new correct console. Original Hurst shifter.

Body was media blasted on rotisorrie and painted correct B5 Blue. Front suspension restoration and parts are completely detailed. Correct brakes/ lines. Engine compartment is completely detailed and Glen-Ray radiator was special order. Carter Thermo Quad TQ4972S Carb is correct numbers matching, took months and $$$ to find very nice original correct air cleaner. All trim is correct and either original or new.

Has decent glass, dual exhaust chrome tips, original chrome bumpers, original Rallye Instrument cluster, original outside left / remote mirror, original Sport hood, Console, 3 speed Wipers with Electric washers, trunk light, electronic ignition system, tachometer, Clock ( not working), and 8 Track AM Radio (not working). Original Challenger badges are included...not installed but have them.  new dash pad....

 E55 340 1- 4BBL 275 V8 Engine, D21 4 - Speed manual transmission w/ Hurst Pistol grip, 8.75" axle, High Performance Axle package- 3.91 Axle Ratio. P/S, P/B, DISC BRAKES, Chrome exhaust tips.

Mileage reads 11,699. Mileage read 8,119 at time of appraisal in 1990. We have put less than 3,200 miles on the car since 1990. It was stored for many years, waiting for our boys to grow up past teen years, and then waiting for complete extensive professional restoration. We have driven it less than 300 miles since everything was rebuilt / restoration completed, only to local area car shows.

This car was built to Specifications for USA order at Hamtramck, MI. Assembly Plant. Thursday June 3, 1971 was scheduled production date. ( As stated before... Is this one of the last 340 Challenger convertibles made ?...or even a very late DODGE convertible.... period ) ?

The minor details...Radiator support must have been changed, no body codes present.

if desired: add a correct Mopar battery, reproduction tires, the ugly blue body side mouldings and spare tire / jack. Bumpers have not been re-chromed. These few added items will finish it 100% to factory authentic.

Feel free to ask / email questions and car is able to be inspected prior to sale. A $2000.00 deposit within 48 hrs. via PayPal is required after sale. A certified Bank check, personal check, or cash will be accepted to complete the sale.  Any Certified or personal check will have to clear the bank prior to transfer of car and title to new owner. New owner is responsible for pick-up , shipping, or transporting of this car from it's current location.

2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad

Thu, 17 Jul 2014

Watchers of the auto industry will notice a theme among the formerly bankrupted American automakers, General Motors and Chrysler. There are the post-bankruptcy vehicles, and the pre-bankruptcy vehicles. The former, in the case of Chrysler, include the Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as the 200 and 300. For GM, there's the Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Impala and Buick Encore, among others. These vehicles have the freshest styling, with sharp exteriors and well-crafted interiors, as well as advanced powertrains and well-sorted chassis.
As for the pre-bankruptcy vehicles, they tend to be easy to spot. Most suffer from inferior driving dynamics, cheaper interiors, poorer fuel economy and often homely looks (we know, there were some decent cars before the bankruptcy, but they were pretty heavily outweighed by the bad ones). Think late, last-generation Chevrolet Impala or Chrysler 200. Increasingly, though, we're seeing vehicles that split the balance between pre- and post-bankruptcy. Vehicles like the Dodge Journey.
The Journey debuted in 2007 as a 2008 model year vehicle, meaning it should fall into the latter category. But heavily breathed upon in 2011, it now enjoys a new, 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, a big, critically acclaimed touchscreen display and in the case of today's tester, a new-for-2014 Crossroad spec.

Chrysler investing $20M in Toledo plant to support 9-speed auto production

Sun, 28 Apr 2013

In 2011, Chrysler announced a $72-million investment in its Toledo Machining Plant to modernize production of the eight- and nine-speed torque-converters for automatic transmissions made there. That upgrade work won't be finished until Q3 of this year, but Chrysler has already announced a further $19.6-million investment to increase production capacity for the nine-speeders.
The extra units will be necessary because the nine-speed transmission they'll be mated to is going into three popular models: it will debut on the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, then go into the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart. The company predicted that this year alone it would sell 200,000 units equipped with the nine-speed tranny, and it is spending some $374 million in addition to the investment in Toledo to upgrade production capacity for it.
The work attached to this new investment won't begin until Q3 of 2014, and it will be finished by the end of that year. There's a press release below with all the details.

Top torque-to-weight ratios under $100k, $50k and $25k

Tue, 07 Oct 2014

Horsepower may steal a lot of headlines, but the always-more-complex torque figure is often a critical one for both the workingman and the motoring playboy. The measure of rotational force represents the twist that can liquefy one's tires or haul one's horse trailer. Good stuff.
It follows then, that as with the horsepower-to-weight list that we assembled for you a few months ago, a list of cars that offer the most pound-feet with the fewest pounds to carry, is an interesting one to break down. Sure, there's a big difference in how the torque is applied from a turbocharged six-cylinder in a Swedish luxury sedan and a massive heavy-duty truck's turbo-diesel. But being the car/stat geeks that we are, we think it's kinda neat that those two vehicles rank near each other where torque and weight intersect.
As with the horsepower list, we've given you figures as pounds per every one pound-foot. Again broken down into broad price categories, we've got a mixed bag of 2014 and 2015 models here, too. Every effort has been made to select the most up-to-date prices and specs, and we've also to omitted some '14 cars that won't be re-upped after the ongoing yearly changeover.
