Up for auction is my 1989 Dodge Dakota Sport custom, inspired by the 1989 Shelby Dakota trucks. Looking for more power than the original V6, I installed a 5.2 liter V8 engine and transmission from a 1991 dakota in the summer of 2011.

The Good

5.2 liter V8 runs strong and doesn't smoke or leak oil
Solid body and frame with only minor surface rust
Factory roll bar and Bosch off-road lights
Water pump recently replaced
Driver's side CV axle, upper and lower ball joints recently replaced
Passenger side rear wheel bearing recently replaced
Good, reliable brakes
Beautiful interior in very good shape
Custom fabricated .25" diamond plate front skid plate
Factory skid plates for transfer case and fuel tank
1" thick rubber custom bed liner, bed is in great shape underneath
Original jack and handle are securely stored behind the seat
Also included in the auction is the original owner's manual with the original dealer bill of sale and a Hayne's repair manual.

The Bad

The transmission is going out and will need to be rebuilt.
The flexplate is cracked by at least two of the flywheel bolt holes, this would be replaced easily with a transmission rebuild anyway.
The truck has a starter button because the neutral safety switch on the transmission is faulty.
The hood has a slight dent and the passenger headlight assembly is cracked from a minor fender-bender.
The roll bar needs to be repainted as well as a few other spots on the body such as the roof and the tailgate.
The power steering pump reservoir leaks power steering fluid
The 4x4 vacuum switch on the transfer case needs to be cleaned or replaced
The smog pump pulley bearings squeak sometimes

With a little TLC, this will make a beautiful truck, toy, or off-road project.

If you have any other questions about the vehicle or terms of sale, please ask.

Upon close of the auction, $100.00 deposit must be made through PayPal within 72 hours. Buyer is responsible for any and all pickup and transportation costs. The truck will need to be towed as it is not in reliable running condition, though it does run and drive well enough for an inspection of the vehicle or to load / unload for transportation. Bidders are welcome to come inspect the vehicle in person, just send me a message or call me at (304) 871-3181 to arrange an appointment.

IIHS says these are the safest cars of 2013

Wed, 02 Jan 2013

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed its annual list of Top Safety Picks, an award that highlights automobiles it says offer "superior crash protection." A new and still more significant award, the Top Safety Pick+ honor, is given to those vehicles that earn good ratings for occupant protection in four out of five areas of measure. And while some 117 vehicles were given the TSP seal of approval for 2013, just 13 passed muster for TSP+.
To be fair, IIHS only evaluated 29 vehicles with its new testing procedures for TSP+ (we'd expect that the number of qualified cars will rise substantially for 2014). Luxury and Near Luxury midsize cars were the first groups evaluated, followed by midsizers in the Moderately Priced Cars category - unsurprisingly, it's only midsize cars that you'll find among the class this year.
Only two luxury sedans made the list of 13 for 2013: the Acura TL and Volvo S60. The other 11 cars on the list included entries from domestic, Japanese and German car makers: Dodge Avenger, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord (sedan and coupe), Kia Optima (but not its close kin, the Hyundai Sonata, strangely), Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Suzuki Kizashi and the Volkswagen Passat all made the grade.

How to turn a Dodge airport tug into a trail slayer

Sun, 16 Nov 2014

Sometimes, having a ton of fun requires takes a ton of work. Just nine days before the so-called Ultimate Adventure 2014, the folks behind 4-Wheel & Off-Road had 40 tasks to complete in order to turn the ratty truck pictured above into a machine that could excel on treacherous off-road trails while still being able to handle highway jaunts. Much of process behind the build was chronicled on the latest episode of Dirt Every Day.
The team's vehicle started life as a 1990 Dodge tug truck that spent part of its life hauling around airplanes. The builders hung on to the Cummins six-cylinder diesel, but they tossed out practically everything else for the project, with some seriously heavy-duty replacement parts for the transmission, transfer case, axles and a whole lot more. The process was certainly a ton of work, but the end result looks like a fantastic crawler.
Sure, it might have been easier to bring a truck that was already prepared, but where would the fun in that have been? Stay tuned until the end of the video for a few glimpses of the completed Dodge and peek at some of the punishment it goes through.

Hero gets his truck back better than new thanks to community support [w/video]

Sun, 29 Jun 2014

You ever hear a story and start cringing before you hear the end because you know how it's going to turn out? That could very well have been the case with the story from a few weeks ago in West Valley City, Utah, where a 14-year-old kid stole his grandfather's Hyundai Veloster and took it for a joyride - through a park full of children. But instead it turned into a heart-warming tale of heroism and a community banding together to do what's right... and then some.
Bryson Rowley was that hero who identified the danger and, rather than sit idly by and watch the joyrider potentially run over a child, got into his truck and drove it into the menacing runaway hatchback. The collision caused some $7,500 to his 2008 Dodge Ram 2500, but instead of getting stuck with the bill - one which his insurance may very well have refused to pay since the crash was, technically speaking, intentional - his community pitched in a helping hand.
Bryan Ellison, who owns West Valley Carstar with his brother, saw the news on television and wanted to help. So he brought Rowley a rental car, picked up his truck and brought it back to his auto repair shop. People from around the community donated parts, and when all was said and done, some $15,000 of work and upgrades were performed on the Ram that was returned to an overwhelmed Bryson Rowley better than new. Watch the video below for the full story.
