Just about everything that prances out of the Ferrari factory these days is weapons-grade sports car chock-full of computerized transmissions and modern race technology. Ferrari is synonymous with incredible leading edge advancements so buyers expect breakthroughs with every new model. That's one reason you haven't been able to buy a Ferrari with a true manual transmission for years. That's too bad because the classic gated shifter and wonderfully weighted stick shift were trademarks of the brand. The last Ferrari to be offered exclusively with a manual transmission throughout its entire production run was the 550 Maranello. The 550 was a bit of a retro car even at the time. As the successor to the mid-engined Testarossa and 512 TR, the 550 looked back to the Ferraris of the 1960s and early 1970s and brought back the front engine V-12. And what an engine. The big twelve packs 478 hp and 419 lb-ft of torque. Shift the six-speed like a pro and the 550 could hit 60 mph in just over 4 seconds and keep pulling to 199 mph. The 550 gave way to the modern era of the paddle shift which soon became the dominant way to change gears. Ferrari and the automotive world in general hasn't looked back since 2005 with very few exceptions. The manual gated gearbox hasn't been available for the V/12 since 2007 as only a few 612's and 599's were made with them during 2005-07. Estimates are at 5% for the production of those two vehicles.

Former Ferrari chief Montezemolo to be chairman of Alitalia
Mon, 10 Nov 2014Luca di Montezemolo may be 67 years old, but he's not quite ready to retire just yet. Not, at least, if the latest reports emanating from Italy are to be believed. According to Reuters, the longtime former Ferrari chief is due to be named chairman of Alitalia.
The troubled Italian airline is on the verge of being bailed out after years of financial difficulty, with Etihad Airways of the United Arab Emirates set to take a 49-percent stake in the company. While the reports have yet to be confirmed by the parties involved, Reuters cites multiple inside sources in revealing that the airline's board met last week and agreed to appoint Montezemolo as chairman, with current Etihad chief James Hogan to act as chief executive officer.
Montezemolo, of course, long served as chairman of Ferrari, having assumed leadership of the company not long after founder Enzo Ferrari died. He also served as chairman of the Fiat group for several years after the passing of Umberto Agnelli, and has headed numerous trade organizations and sporting bodies. But his tenure at Ferrari and the broader Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire came to an end two months ago when clashes with Fiat chief Sergio Marchionne saw Montezemolo step down.
Motor Trend hits Laguna Seca with Ferrari F12, Chevy Corvette, Porsche 911
Thu, 26 Sep 2013According to the crew at Motor Trend, we should think of the video below "as an addendum to Best Driver's Car," a test the magazine put together that elevated the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S above all others in the category of driving joy. It seems the brand-new 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray wasn't able to take part in the magazine's official test, and neither was the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.
And so Motor Trend did the only logical thing: It procured both the 'Vette and Prancing Horse as soon as it could, and put them both on track with the Driver's Car-winning 911. Of course, these cars don't actually compete against each other - the Ferrari offers up 731 horsepower and wears an asking price of $434,144 as tested, which means you could buy four loaded Corvettes for the price of one F12, and still have money left for a garage to store them in - but that's not the point of this particular test.
The point of this test isn't to listen to the beautiful sounds coming from the Porsche's flat-six-cylinder, the Corvette's pushrod V8 or the Ferrari's luscious V12, either, but the video below is worth watching for those three reasons alone. You know what to do.
Former Dolphin Richie Incognito takes a bat to his own Ferrari [w/video]
Thu, 27 Feb 2014Richie Incognito, the former Miami Dolphin's offensive lineman, reportedly vandalized his own new Ferrari FF with a baseball bat on Wednesday, in a story that is just the latest bizarre event to befall the professional football player.
Initial reports indicated that Incognito's car was vandalized and, weirdly, covered in t-shirts bearing the player's name. Following those reports, though, Incognito then told police that he attacked the black FF, although we're still unsure as of why.
Incognito has been in the news of late, following reports from the Miami Dolphins regarding his hazing of teammate Jonathan Martin. As for the Ferrari, damage seems rather light considering it was attacked with a bat by a 320-pound NFL offensive lineman. There are some dings and dents in the hood, and there's a piece of bat lodged in the grille, but beyond that, it looks like this FF will live to drive another day.
