Ford E 350 Turbo Diesel Turtle Top Bus. Until recently this bus was taking tourists into Yosemite on a regular basis. She's a majestic vehicle with a lot of power ~ yet she's only a little bigger than a standard parking spot. The bus is registered as a conversion RV and has been partially converted with king sized bed platform (modular ~ can be switched to full size) and dresser. A person of medium height can (5' 8") stand up comfortably inside. The widest part of the cabin is 78 or 79 inches and the length from back to driving cabin is about 12 or 13 feet.  Interior is insulated and covered with plush suede-like grey fabric. There are lots of real wood details on the inside and several swanky lighting options. The window mirroring gives privacy without impeding glorious views.  The bus has a 12 volt VCR and TV that work plus a pretty good sound system that plays CDs and cassettes (yes!). She has an electric/manual side door that works well. The rear door has been professionally adjusted to function better and includes an brand new latch.  This bus comes with a tow hitch installed and can pull quite a bit of weight.  The bus has a rear gate that swings out for easy access to the back door and has a full spare wheel mounted on it. She has good brakes and tires, new fuel filter, fresh oil change, new glow plugs, freshly tuned up engine runs great. 251,900 miles on it. Needs gas gauge replaced.
I put a lot of love into this vehicle planning to travel around the country ~ my plans have changed and it is time for someone else to love it.
Video tour available upon request.  You are welcome to have a mechanic look at it also.  If you have any questions, contact me and I'll get in touch with you :).

Detroit automakers mulling helping DIA avoid bankruptcy looting

Tue, 13 May 2014

It's not really a secret that the city of Detroit is in lots and lots of trouble. Even with an emergency manager working to guide it through bankruptcy, a number of the city's institutions remain in very serious danger. One of the most notable is the Detroit Institute of Arts, a 658,000-square-foot behemoth of art that counts works from Van Gogh, Picasso, Gauguin and Rembrandt (not to mention a version of Rodin's iconic "The Thinker," shown above) as part of its permanent collection.
Throughout the bankruptcy, the DIA has been under threat, with art enthusiasts, historians and fans of the museum concerned that its expansive collection - valued between $454 and $867 million by Christie's - could be sold by the city to help square its $18.5-billion debt.
Now, though, Detroit's hometown automakers could be set to step up and help save the renowned museum. According to a report from The Detroit News, the charitable arms of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler could be set to donate $25 million as part of a DIA-initiated campaign, called the "grand bargain." As part of the deal, the DIA would seek $100 million in corporate donations as part of a larger attempt at putting together an $816-million package that would be paid to city pension funds over 20 years. Such a move would protect the city's art collection from being sold off.

Ford ST Octane Academy [w/video]

Wed, 04 Jun 2014

The ST school is about more than just handbrake turns, hot laps, and sliding into parking spaces.
I felt like such a rock star. On my second pass around the UrbanCross course (read: fancy autocross) at the Ford ST Octane Academy, I absolutely nailed the exit, sliding the bright-yellow Focus ST sideways into a box the size of a parking space, all four wheels in line.

Which is more fuel efficient, driving with a pickup's tailgate up or down?

Tue, 26 Aug 2014

Thanks to the smoke wand in the wind tunnel, you can actually see the difference in our video.
Should you drive with your pickup truck's tailgate up or down? It's an age-old controversy that's divided drivers for decades. Traditionalists will swear you should leave the tailgate down. Makes sense, right? It would seem to let the air flow more cleanly over the body and through the bed. But there's also a school of thought that argues trucks are designed to look and operate in a specific manner, and modern design techniques can help channel the airflow properly. So don't mess with all of that: Leave the tailgate up.
