Up for auction is a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL, 4 dr. hardtop. The car is white in color, with a blue interior. This vehicle  may be used for either restoration, or as a parts car. The car has not run in approximately 10+ years.   The engine was overhauled  at about 80-85,000 miles, but the odometer is at over 160,000 now. The car was parked due to the exhaust manifold bolts being broken off while a "mechanic" was attempting to replace the manifold gaskets. When he removed the intake manifold to have the broken bolts removed, he neglected to clean the debris from the valley, and consequently partially clogged the oil screen/pickup. Car was not driven with the oil light on, or with low oil pressure. I purchased the car to repair, but other projects came first, and the repairs were not done, so the car has sat idle for over 10 tears. This is a complete car, less the generator, brackets for the generator, and other small miscellaneous under-hood items. The car is factory equipped with bucket seats and console, with console mounted shifter. The floor pans are in good condition, to the best of my knowledge (haven't pulled up the carpet to look) , but have looked under the car. The trunk floor is rusted out, due to a bad trunk weatherstrip. The trunk floor will have to be replaced, as will the trunk weatherstrip. Interior is complete. Glass is intact, but the front windshield is cracked at the bottom. The car has been kept covered to prevent water intrusion into the interior. Seats and door panels are in good to better- than- fair condition. Headliner is there, but has fallen in some places. All exterior moldings and trim are in place, and for the most part has only tarnishing, but no dents. The body is in very good condition for the age, with some minor rust out on the lower rear quarter panels behind the wheel wells (due to trunk rust out). Car has factory spinner (tri-bar) wheel covers, and a pair of stainless skirts. Windows roll up and down. The car has no factory air conditioning, no power locks, no power windows, no power seats. Car will have to be picked up at my location, or the buyer must arrange for transport to his/her location, at his/her expense. You must make your own arrangements for transport of the vehicle. Car will not leave these premises until payment is made in full. If the buyer is to personally pick up the car at my location, cash is acceptable. The only other form of payment to be accepted will be via PayPal. The car is sold AS IS, with no warranties, either expressed or implied. If you have any questions, please ask. Pictures are posted.. There is a low reserve on the vehicle. I would rather sell it cheap, as see it go to the crusher or for junk. Car is sold with a Bill of Sale only. Vehicles in Alabama were not issued a title prior to the 1975 model year.

The car DOES have factory air conditioning. An error was made in the original listing.

The fascinating forgotten civil defense history of Mister Softee trucks

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

Hemmings came across an interesting article from the Throwin' Wrenches blog about the intersection of ice cream, cars and civic duty in America's late 1950s. In particular, it focuses on the Mister Softee trucks, which criss-crossed neighborhoods of the eastern US serving ice cream. Looking past the ultra-durable vehicles used - heavy-duty Ford-based chassis, for what it's worth - the article delves into some deeper national-security territory.
See, Mister Softee truck owners were voluntary members of the Civil Defense, thanks to all the useful stuff (potable water, generators, freezers and fridges) that the machines carried with them for serving ice cream. Click over to Throwin' Wrenches for the full run down of how Mister Softee would have stepped in to help fight if the Cold War ever turned a little hotter.

Does the new 2015 Ford Mustang have a burnout control system?

Tue, 10 Dec 2013

Whether it's lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring or automatic emergency braking, most of the electronic systems we see emerging on new vehicles focus on safety. But there are some there just for enthusiasts. We're talking about systems like automatic throttle blipping for perfect downshifts, or launch control to get that textbook acceleration from a standstill. But the latest system could prove just the opposite of the latter.
Although it has given us most of the details, Ford is still keeping certain elements of its new Mustang secret. But emerging reports may have the skinny on one system which Ford is trying is darnedest to keep under its hat for the time being. That, according to unnamed sources cited by Motor Authority, is burnout control.
The system is reportedly designed to help novices execute the perfect smokey burnout - sort of like launch control, but specifically the opposite. The system could, according to elaborative speculation, lock the front brakes while spooling up the engine to optimal revolutions before dumping (or indicating the driver to do dump) the clutch. A cloud of tire smoke and a long pair of skid marks would then ensue.

Are you Ford's next Bullitt Mustang? [w/poll]

Thu, 27 Mar 2014

Ford has a long history of offering special editions of its legendary Mustang. One of the most vaunted of those trim packages, though, has only been offered twice. The first time was in 2001, and then again in 2008. Yes, we're talking about the Bullitt.
Named for the infamous Dark Highland Green Mustang Fastback driven by Steve McQueen in the 1968 cop melodrama Bullitt, the car was famous for not just its pilot, but the high-speed chase it took part in during the movie. Now, we think we have images of the next Bullitt.
According to our spy photographers, the paint is a "dead-ringer" for the Dark Highland Green that has signified these special edition Mustangs. While we're inclined to agree, it's also worth pointing out that this shade looks very similar to one of the 2015's other new colors, Guard. We've yet to see one on the road (let alone in such dreary conditions), so it's tough to say for certain.
