This pickup could be your next daily driver.

What?  When I first built this pickup I drove it almost 100 miles daily.  It's been from my home in Longview WA to Santa Maria CA (West Coast Kustoms Cruisin Nationals) twice which is a 2000 mile round trip.  On long highway trips like that it gets 18-19 miles per gallon.  The pickup has been on the road since 2006 but was recently torn down for paint and to finish upholstery.

  • Wheels are 15" from a 1951 Plymouth.  Fronts are stock (4 1/2") and rears were widened 1/2".
  • Front tires (B.F. Goodrich Silvertown 6.00 X 15) are new.  Rear tires are Firestone Deluxe Champion 6.00 X 15 and are in great shape.
  • Engine was completely rebuilt.  Bored .040 over, heads ported, RV grind on cam from Hot Heads, balanced and stock compression.
  • Carburetors are Holley 94s from Vintage Speed.
  • Electronic ignition.
  • Aluminum radiator
  • T5 Camero 5 speed transmission.
  • Front disk brakes.
  • Cab was chopped 5" and A pillars were laid back to give it a Bonneville/lakester look.  Rear window wasn't chopped, just repositioned, floor was made from formed and fabricated 10 gauge steel.
  • Exhaust is 2 1/4" out the back with glasspacks.
  • Steering box is original but completely rebuilt.  The old worm gear became the new shifter knob.
  • Original bed was shortened and new stake pockets added.
  • Bed cover was made from on old tin canopy.
  • Gas tank and Optima battery are in the bed.
  • Hood was pie cut to narrow the front; then nosed downwards to give the front end a nice rake.
  • Rodall Performance air cleaners.
  • All red upholstery is leather.  Some paint transfer from doors are on the side of the seat bottoms.
  • Ashtray is from a 1935 Ford (rotating ball with V8 symbol embossed on outside).
  • Original frame with VIN easily seen.  Makes licensing a lot easier.
  • Pin striped by John Harmon

Ford looks to space robots to improve car-to-car communications [w/video]

Wed, 21 Aug 2013

Ford has partnered with St. Petersburg Polytechnic University for three years to research various kinds of connected vehicle communications. The university tie-up is part of its study of space robots, NASA systems created to enable space-to-Earth communication, and the university's own development of systems that enable communication between the International Space State and Earth.
The objective is for Ford to engineer layers of robust networks and redundancy systems that will allow your car to speak to other cars, to emergency vehicles, to infrastructure like traffic lights and buildings, and to the cloud. Benefits would come in just about every area of transit, from avoiding accidents, to getting medical workers to an accident more quickly, to improving the flow of traffic during rush hour.
Check out the press release below for details on what Ford wants to learn from the JUSTIN Humanoid and NASA Robonaut R2, and a video of technical leader Oleg Gusikhin discussing his interest in the project.

Consumer Reports says these are the worst new cars of 2014

Thu, 27 Feb 2014

Consumer Reports has announced its annual list of worst vehicles, a cringe-inducing contrast to its list of top vehicles. Ignominiously leading the way in 2014 is Chrysler, which has a staggering seven models listed.
Jeep nearly sweeps the small SUV segment by itself, with its Compass, Patriot and 2.4-liter version of the new Cherokee, while the only midsize sedans listed by CR were the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger. The new Dodge Dart and the Dodge Journey round out CR's condemnation of Chrysler.
Ford is taking heat as well, with the Taurus, Edge and their counterparts from Lincoln all listed as the worst vehicles in their respective segments. Toyota doesn't fare much better, with its Lexus IS, Scion iQ and tC also making the list.

Has the 2015 Ford Mustang gained hundreds of pounds?

Sun, 01 Jun 2014

Automakers face competing interests when it comes to developing a new generation of vehicle. On the one hand, companies want to build their cars to be safer and better handling, with more equipment and maybe even larger dimensions over the model it's replacing. On the other hand, they strive to keep weight down to the benefit of both performance and fuel consumption. Usually something has to give, and in the case of the new 2015 Ford Mustang, those efforts may have resulted in a weight penalty of two or three hundred pounds.
This according to Blue Oval modifier Steeda Autosports, which states that "the 2015 Mustang ended up gaining 200-300 pounds in this remake". Despite the Mustang not being on the market yet, it would appear the leading Ford aftermarketer has been given early access to the 2015 model to help jumpstart its tuning efforts (a rather common development among trusted tuners). If Steeda's assertion is accurate, that would make the challenge of getting the new pony car up to speed for both Ford and aftermarket customizers like Steeda that much greater.
We're waiting for official word from Ford on the veracity of Steeda's claim, but if true, it's bound to be a bit of disappointing news for legions of Blue Oval performance enthusiasts. Watch this space for more.
