Based on 11 reviews

Hyundai has been getting increasing respect over the years, and has come to fill the role of a stylish, safe, yet affordable vehicle.  The 2006 Hyundai Accent is the smallest entry-level car in its lineup, and it has gone through a major overhaul to its look, engine, and standard features.  As of 2006, the Accent was offered only as a GLS sedan, but a GS and SE hatchback will appear for 2007.  Added inches to the length, width, height, and wheelbase means more interior room, more trunk space, and a steadier ride.  The 1.6-liter DOHC I4 engine boosts power to 110-hp with variable valve timing, and is coupled to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.  This makes it the most powerful subcompact on the road.

Bigger 14-inch wheels are now standard, as are ABS brakes and side curtain airbags (along with the dual-front side, for a total of six airbags).  A fully independent suspension, which has been stiffened, improves handling.  Rear seats get two more inches of legroom, and the trunk adds another cubic foot (12.4 total), which can be expanded when the rear seats fold down.  Though power features are still optional, the 2006 Accent does come with air conditioning, a CD player, tilt steering wheel, power steering, intermittent wipers, and two power outlets.  Cupholders and storage compartments are de rigeur.

A redesigned dash and higher driver's seat improves overall visibility.  The exterior has been more aerodynamically styled, with more chrome trimming and sleeker lines.  Fuel economy has also improved, averaging around 30/35 mpg.  The improvements have made the 2006 Accent a major competitor to the Corolla and Civic, especially since it's more affordable and offers a great 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.  Drivers like the better interior materials, the gas mileage, and handling, but still complain about the small backseat, labored acceleration, and underpowered engine.

Sonata, Elantra driving down Hyundai quality scores

Wed, 26 Feb 2014

Hyundai was the butt of many jokes in the auto industry when it first entered the US market, but since then, it has forged ahead and built cars that stand with the best in their respective segments. The 2011 Sonata and 2011 Elantra were seen as the apotheosis of the brand's forward progress when they were introduced, but falling J.D. Power and Associates Dependability Study results may actually cause them to hurt the company's hard-earned reputation.
J.D Power's study examines three-year-old vehicles for problems per 100 vehicles. Since the 2011 study for 2008 model year cars, Hyundai has fallen from 10th overall with 132 problems to 27th in the 2014 survey of 2011 model year vehicles with 169 problems. It was also Hyundai's second consecutive year of an increase in reported problems. According to Automotive News, many of these problems are due to faults with the Sonata and Elantra, but J.D. Power didn't identify specifically what issues caused Hyundai's dependability to tumble so far down the list. However, the study found that, on average, reliability fell throughout the industry for the first time since 1998.
Getting the Sonata and Elantra right are vital to Hyundai. In 2013, they were the company's best-selling cars. "We'll be closely going through the data to see where improvements need to be made. Hyundai's goal is nothing short of quality leadership, and the report shows we have work to do," Hyundai spokesperson Jim Trainor said in an email to Autoblog.

2015 Hyundai Tuscon Fuel Cell will lease for $499/month, comes with free hydrogen

Wed, 20 Nov 2013

If nothing else, Hyundai wants to make it as easy as pie for you to check out its upcoming hydrogen-powered 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell vehicle. Given that the Korean automaker will be the first to offer a mass-produced fuel cell vehicle in the US (sorry, Honda, the FCX Clarity just doesn't cut it for this category) and that the hydrogen-powered Tuscon is coming next spring, there's no time like the present to lower hurdles.
Here's how Hyundai is trying to remove your worries. First, if you want to have an extended test drive, you can go rent a fuel cell Tuscon at participating Enterprise locations, starting next spring. Nothing was said about buying one of these SUVs outright, but after putting $2,999 down, you will be able to lease the H2 Tuscon for $499 a month for 36 months, and that includes "unlimited free hydrogen refueling" and a hydrogen version of the "At Your Service Valet Maintenance." Since there are only ten public hydrogen refueling stations in the US, and nine of them are in California, it makes sense that the Tuscon will be available only in the Golden State, specifically at just four dealerships. Hyundai said in a statement that, "Availability of the Tucson Fuel Cell will expand to other regions of the country consistent with the accelerating deployment of hydrogen refueling stations." In other words, don't hold your breath.
Speaking at the unveiling, Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik praised the hydrogen work that Honda and Toyota are doing here at the show and said, "We think fuel cell technology will increase the adoption rate of zero-emission vehicles, and we'll all share the environmental benefits." In the Tuscon, that means an estimated 300-mile range and a refill time of under 10 minutes along with the instant torque of an electric motor. We'll be most interested to see how that plays out in the marketplace. Feel free to read more in the press release below.

2015 Hyundai Sonata found uncovered in Korea

Wed, 12 Mar 2014

Hyundai is locked and loaded to debut its redesigned, 2015 Sonata at the New York Auto Show next month. For one enterprising Korean photographer, however, the reveal just couldn't come soon enough.
A South Korean website called Bobaedream.co.kr unceremoniously published some images of what would appear to be a completely undisguised example of the new Sonata. Korean Car Blog quickly followed up on the leak, claiming that the car in question was fitted with Hyundai's 2.0-liter turbocharged GDI engine, making 274 horsepower, and connected to an all-new, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Whether that information came from a reliable insider source (as the photos would suggest) or was just a best guess, we can't say. But we can see what direction Hyundai is headed in with the Sonata. The front end seen in the spy shots is more or less what we'd already seen in the last teaser picture, with a new headlamp design helping to set off a prominent grille. The grille does seem to have some element of the strong, graphical surround from the teaser, too, though it's not as defined in these low-resolution pictures. Sheetmetal on the hood and bodysides seems cleaner, straighter and less fussy than in the current car, too. As for whether or not this is the Korean-spec car or the one destined for the US market, that's unclear, though we have been told that the two cars do look very similar.
