Model Overview
The "M," as it's called by Infiniti, is now available in four different models; there's the V6-powered M35 and the V8-powered M45, both of which can now be had with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The 4.5L, DOHC V8 makes 325 horsepower in the M45, while the M35 comes with a 275-horespower, 3.5L V6.The V8 is especially noteworthy; it has titanium valves, a microfinished crankshaft, lightweight pistons and a single-stage cam drive-chain for quiet-running and robust power delivery. Both engines come with a five-speed automatic transmission that includes a manual shift mode that automatically matches revs during downshifts for a sporty feel and better control. An independent double-wishbone suspension design in front and multi-link setup in back, along with stabilizer bars, helps handling. The doors, hood, and trunklid are made of aluminum for weight savings, which also aids maneuverability. The all-wheel-drive system that's now offered with either engine reverts to a 50/50 distribution for standing starts and limited-traction situations, then it delivers up to 100 percent up to the rear wheels when cruising or when needed for traction. Electronic stability control is also included, with standard anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist.A newly available lane departure prevention system, which makes its worldwide debut on the M and Infiniti's EX35 SUV, uses a small camera to detect when you're drifting out of your lane and applies slight brake pressure to the wheels opposite the drift to gently guide the vehicle back into position.Even though it's equally a sport sedan, the M's interior comes equipped as well as the best luxury cars, with leather upholstery matched with rosewood or aluminum trim and standard leather seating and climate-controlled front seats, plus a very long list of standard luxury conveniences. The available Sport Package, in addition to appearance enhancements inside and out and larger 19-inch wheels and tires, includes the rear active steer system, which uses electric motors to precisely adjust the rear-suspension geometry for better control, depending on steering input and vehicle speed. Infiniti claims that the system helps bring sports-car-like agility with luxury sedan stability and ride quality.Standout options include a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, a rearview monitor, intelligent cruise control, and heated power reclining seats in back. The top available sound system employs Bose surround sound and has 14 speakers, including two speakers mounted onto the shoulder area of each front seat.

Infiniti Q70 adds long-wheelbase model, fresh looks for 2015

Wed, 16 Apr 2014

After all the work done for the Q50, Infiniti has finally given some attention to its flagship sedan, the Q70 (or, for those that refuse to use the brand's latest nomenclature, the M). While the refreshed sedan sports a few visual tweaks, the big bit of news is that it's the first vehicle in its segment to offer both long- and a short-wheelbase options (keep in mind, both BMW and Audi offer LWBs in China, but not in the US).
Infiniti has stretched the standard car's 114.2-inch wheelbase to 120.1 inches, lengthening the car 7.3 inches overall. Nearly the entire wheelbase increase is dedicated to rear-seat legroom, with a substantial increase of 5.6 inches overall. As for the effect the stretching had on the Q70's looks, well, we actually think it might look better with the longer wheelbase.
It's a nice change of proportions that is complemented by the fresh looks of the facelifted Q70. New head and taillights are the biggest changes, with full LEDs in the back and LED accents in front. There's certainly a bit of Q50 in the front, thanks to both the headlights and the new "double-arch" grille, complete with mesh-finish inserts. In the cabin, material quality looks to remain impressive, with Infiniti's cool silver-dust wood trim being shown off in the press images. Outside of that, interior changes are kept to a minimum.

Infiniti aims to "de-Americanize" lineup, add flagship

Thu, 19 Sep 2013

Nissan launched Infiniti back in 1989 as a US brand, but more recently, Nissan's luxury marque has started focusing on more of a global presence. With a new global headquarters set up in Hong Kong and former Audi bigwig Johan de Nysschen at the helm, Wards Auto is reporting that the automaker's next goal is to create a "de-Americanized" lineup of vehicles.
This plan essentially consists of smaller cars and smaller-displacement engines to make Infiniti more attractive for buyers in Europe and Asia - two regions that tend to skew more toward smaller vehicles and smaller powerplants. To this point, Infiniti has been focused on vehicles better-suited to the US market - in fact, its smallest engine is a 3.7-liter V6 with 330 horsepower, and it doesn't offer a single diesel.
The first step in this transformation will be part of the Daimler-Nissan engine deal that will see a four-cylinder diesel eventually used in the 2014 Q50, but the report also reconfirms the importance of the soon-to-arrive Q30 production model (a concept of which was revealed last week in Frankfurt), along with the idea of a QX30 based on the Nissan Qashqai. There's also the latest projection of a full-electric Infiniti model that Wards says will debut sometime around 2015. Of course, Infiniti isn't giving up on large cars entirely - the reports indicates that Infiniti is planning a fullsize flagship model - possibly named Q80 - to compete against German sedans like the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Infiniti Q50 Active Lane control is scarily self-driving

Wed, 06 Aug 2014

Occasionally, we post videos that require us to tell you not to try something at home. They usually involve some unsafe activity that requires a high-degree of skill and planning to achieve. This video, though, gets a more interesting disclaimer: Don't ever try this. Ever. Never ever. Period. Seriously, don't try it.
Some clowns in Germany decided to put the Infiniti Q50's Active Lane Control system to the test. For those not in the know, ALC can make small adjustments to keep the vehicle in the correct lane, a feature that's just starting to pick up steam. Instead of using it the way you're supposed to - with both hands on the wheel - these guys not only take both hands off the steering, but at one point climb out of the seat while traveling at freeway speeds, just to see how automated the combination of ALC and adaptive cruise control really are.
Yes, we've seen this sort of stunt before, but it was done in extremely controlled circumstances that didn't put the cars, the driver or any other motorists at risk and probably had appropriate emergency personnel on hand should the worst happen.
