This meticulously maintained 1971 Jaguar E-type Series II Roadster is one of the last Series II roadsters imported prior to the introduction of the larger Series III version.  The Series II retained the sleek and nimble size and styling of the original 1961 E-Type design, famously named by Enzo Ferrari as “the most beautiful automobile ever made,”  while integrating 10 years of refinement in drivability, reliability, comfort and safety:

  • The engine is fueled by the factory installed dual Zenith–Stromberg carburetors which offer improved drivability over the earlier SU carbureted engines.

  • A larger front air intake as well as the upgraded cooling system with dual electric fans eliminated the cooling issues of the early E-types.

  • The factory upgraded disc brake system includes the improved Girling calipers to replace the less effective Dunlop units.

  • Shoulder belts added to lap restraints

1971 was the last year the famous racing-designed “XK” 6 cylinder engines were used in the car; only 35 were built that year with that motor, 19 of which were roadsters.  The beautiful wooden steering wheels left with the XK engine, as the much heavier 12 cylinder motor introduced that year necessitated power steering and a metal steering wheel, further changing the driving experience.

In 1998, the owner of this car decided to freshen this rust-free, undamaged, and unmodified E-Type to the high level of finish reflected in the photos.  The cost of this project exceeded $30,000 in this “no expense spared” restoration.  The exterior color was changed from sable to black, otherwise the restoration renewed the car to original condition.  The body was expertly prepared and the color conversion was extended to include all surfaces.  The quality of the coachwork and paintwork is outstanding.   All body panels are arrow straight and properly aligned.  Automotive Restorations of Stratford,Connecticut http://www.automotiverestorations.com/  was selected to perform the restoration, given their extensive experience with the Jaguar mark, as well as their commitment to craftsmanship since 1978.   A partial list of work includes:

  • New paint, leather seats, door panels, carpet set, canvas top

  • Complete engine detail

  • Complete tune-up with carburetor rebuild, new ignition coil, water pump

  • New clutch and clutch system hydraulics

  • Brakes, wheel bearings, fuel sender, blower motor

  • BASF Glasurit color code 1250 finished with clearcoat was selected to ensure a permanent show quality finish.

  • The interior was restored with Connolly Biscuit leather #A3243.

The chrome trim is in excellent condition including the chrome wire wheels and wire spare with “redline” Michelins. The “knock-off” hubs reflect its Jaguar racing heritage. The leather is supple, cool in the sun, and in excellent condition.  All gauges are functional including the clock. The black canvas convertible top is in excellent condition and the eisenglass window is clear and crease free.

Throughout my ownership of this beautiful vehicle, I have kept it garaged and drive it 2-3 times a week, both enjoying it and keeping it in excellent running condition. I have fueled it with only ethanol-free high test gas.  I am privileged to own this elegant piece of automotive art and history and look forward to inquiries.

Jaguar's first-ever Super Bowl ad to feature F-Type Coupe

Sun, 10 Nov 2013

Patrons of this year's Los Angeles Auto Show will be able to get their first glimpse at the new Jaguar F-Type Coupe, but the new hardtop sports car will be shown off to an even greater audience in early February. No, we aren't talking about the Chicago Auto Show - we're referring to the Super Bowl. Jaguar will debut its first-ever Super Bowl ad during the second half of the big game on February 2, 2014, and the sleek new F-Type Coupe will be the star.
According to Jaguar, the ad campaign will pose the question, "Have you ever noticed how in Hollywood movies, all the villains are played by Brits?" And for all you social media mavens out there, Jaguar will launch a specific hashtag to go with this marketing: #GoodToBeBad.
British director Tom Hooper is responsible for the ad, which is being filmed in London. Americans will get their first glimpse at the campaign this weekend in the first spot, called Disruptor, but the big F-Type Coupe spot will not air until Super Bowl XLVIII in February.

London skyscraper caught melting cars

Tue, 03 Sep 2013

A new skyscraper under construction in London is apparently to blame for some mysteriously melting car parts on the city's surrounding streets. The 37-story building at 20 Fenchurch Street, nicknamed the "Walkie Talkie" for how it looks, features a convex side of glass windows that apparently concentrates the sun's rays like a kid with a magnifying glass. Instead of smiting ants, however, the building was caught focusing its sun-sourced laser death beam on an innocent Jaguar XJ parked on Eastcheap street. The intense heat managed to melt a sideview mirror, plastic C-pillar cover and Jaguar emblem (scroll down for an image of the damage).
Fortunately, the construction company, Land Securities, had some scruples and reportedly left a note on the car for its owner reading "Your car's buckled, could you give us a call?" They've also since apologized and agreed to pay for the £946 done - about $1,500 - in damages by their blazing hot building. A joint statement with the Canary Wharf district in which the building's located was also released. In it, the developer acknowledges concerns about the reflected light and says it's looking into the matter. The city has also decided to close a few parking bays that could be in the building's line of fire, so to speak, until a solution can be engineered. Since news of the melting Jag broke, other vehicle owners have also come forward claiming the building, re-nicknamed the "Walkie Scorchie," has damaged their cars, as well.
This isn't the first shiny-new-building-attacks-cars story we've heard - architect Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles was built amidst concern that its polished ribbons of stainless steel were blinding motorists and causing accidents, along with raising the temperatures of nearby buildings with its reflected light. The building's surfaces were later given a matte polish.

Jaguar XK and F-Type meet for final sibling faceoff

Fri, 08 Aug 2014

There's nothing that real, dyed-in-the-wool car geeks love so much as to say "Old Car X is actually a lot better than New Car Y." For reasons that defy both logic and science, we all (your author included) are able to, almost simultaneously, bitch about needed advancements in current vehicles and then bemoan character lost in the next crop.
Mitsubishi Evo models have been supremely prone to this bifurcation of opinion in recent years (ask an Evo IX fanboy about the Evo X sometime... ), and performance cars wearing WRX, Mustang, and M3 badges have been deeply subject to it, as well.
The Jaguar XK and F-Type are not exactly in the same one-model, generational-changeover form as those mentioned above, but that doesn't mean that there aren't defenders of both the old dog and the new joint. Autocar seeks the truth of the matter in this new video, and we're just happy to come along for the ride. May the best sib win.
