"THE ULTIMATE BEACH/LAKE CRUISER"

1986 Jeep CJ-7

I purchased this CJ-7 in March of 2002.  At that time, there were 99k miles on the factory installed 4.2 V6.  My goal for this vehicle was simple....to build the ultimate beach cruiser.  There were tons of Jeeps out there that had diamond plated panels covering body rot, or tired engines/transmissions from being beat on during off road driving.  My decision to purchase this CJ was based on its low "on road" miles for its age, and its use as a daily driver as opposed to a weekend mud hog.  The complete fiberglass body (tub, hood, fenders, windshield framed) permanently fixed all the body rot issues.  Fender flares from a '97 Wrangler Sahara were then added to give this CJ a bit of a restomod look.  The body was then coated in PPG Patriot Blue metallic paint and clear coat.  The frame got a 3" Skyjacker Suspension lift, to go with the 33"x 12.50" Trxus Super Swamper Tires, mounted on Micky Thompson Classic II polished rims.  I had both front and rear bumpers powder coated black, along with all seat brackets, glove box grab bar, and 4x4 shift lever.

Now that the exterior was looking good, it was time to do something about the old carbureted drivetrain.  This Jeep came factory equipped with the Dana 300 transfer case, Dana 44 Rear Axle, and Dana 30 Front Axle.  Anyone who knows Jeeps, knows that these driveline components were essentialy bullet proof, and desired by those in the off road community.  Although these components are impressive, I was still focused on building a show stopper for the beach.  Both axles came equipped from the factory with a 2.73 gear ratio, which I had swapped out with 4.10 gears, to get those 33" Super Swampers spinning quicker off the line.  The tired 4.2 In Line V6 Jeep Motor was the next to go.  I contacted the folks at Advanced Adapters and got the necessary parts to swap in a Chevy 350 Small Block and 700R4 Automatic 4 Speed Overdrive Transmission.  An ECM from an 87 K5 Blazer, Painless Wiring Harness (Including Check Engine Light & OBD1 Code Reader Port), and a new Holly Throttle Body added TBI fuel injection to crate motor.  A 4 core Be Cool Aluminum radiator was installed to keep the new motor cool on those hot summer days.  The 3 speed factory Jeep automatic transmission was swapped out with a rebuilt 4 speed 700R4 with overdrive. A '91 GMC tilt steering column was also installed to allow gear selection of the 4 new tranny gears (OD, D, 2, 1).

The interior is finished in tan Bestop front and rear seats, new carpet, and a killer audio system.  The soft top is made by Bestop and was ordered with the tinted rear windows option.  There is a Kenwood AM/FM/CD/Ipod receiver w/wireless remote, which streams your favorite tunes to dual 10" Rockford Fosgate subs, located in a carpeted box behind the rear seat.  There are Infinity 6x9's in the backseat, and 100w 4.25" speakers in the front dash.  These speakers are driven by two 500w Rockford Fosgate amps, discretely installed under the rear seat.

I'm sure I have forgotten something, so feel free to email me any questions.  This Jeep has been my summer toy for the past 12 years.  Always garaged with a car cover, and only driven on sunny days.  I have over $25,000 invested into this restoration and hate to see it go.....but the growing family requires me to clean out the toy box.

Chrysler recalling 630k Jeep models worldwide

Thu, 06 Jun 2013

Despite its refusal to recall 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty models this week over a gas tank fire risk, Chrysler will be recalling 630,000 Jeep Compass (pictured), Patriot and Wrangler vehicles around the globe for a pair of entirely different reasons.
The affected Compass and Patriot models are all from the 2010 to 2012 model years - 254,000 in the United States, 45,400 in Canada and 109,000 elsewhere in the world. In these models, a software error may result in the late deployment of the side airbags and seatbelt tensioners. In the event of a crash, failure of these systems could result in more serious injuries for the vehicle's occupants.
Jeep's go-anywhere Wrangler also faces a separate recall due to power steering fluid lines that can possibly wear a hole in the transmission oil cooler line. According to Chrysler, the vehicles could then leak fluid, possibly damaging the transmissions. Roughly 221,100 Wrangler models are being recalled because of this issue, all of which are fitted with Jeep's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine. In the US, 181,000 vehicles are affected, with an additional 18,400 in Canada and 21,700 additional units worldwide. A Chrysler spokesperson said that no crashes or injuries have been reported with either case, according to the Associated Press.

Gilles defends 2014 Jeep Cherokee design as "very contemporary"

Thu, 28 Feb 2013

Following the forced-hand introduction of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, there has definitely been a mix of responses revolving around everything from its design to the return of the legendary nameplate. As evidence of this, just check out the 1,000+ comments in our article last week and some of the many opinions that were voiced. Following this not-too-warm reception, Ward's Auto had a chance to talk to Chrysler designer chief - and SRT president - Ralph Gilles, who shed a little more light on the styling direction of the new Cherokee.
Rather than looking to previous models for inspiration, Gilles says that the Cherokee has been designed to be more contemporary, with Mark Allen, head of Jeep design, adding that a main goal was to make sure the design still looks modern five years from now. Interestingly, Gilles does point out that one of the design elements incorporated on the new Cherokee that pays homage to past Jeeps is the sharply downward angle for the leading edge of the beltline, which he notes is meant to mimic the look of the old YJ and TJ Wrangler models fitted with half doors. Of course, the squared-off wheel openings - a signature Jeep cue - are still used.
This is probably a design that will need to be seen on the street in actual daylight to properly assess, but in the meantime, we'll bring you full images and impressions when the Cherokee debuts at next month's New York Auto Show.

Refreshed Chrysler 300 SRT won't be sold in NA

Mon, 20 Oct 2014

It looks like it might be time to bid farewell to the V8 rumble from the Chrysler 300 SRT - at least if you live in North America. The reported change comes as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles reshuffles its ranks with the Dodge brand, re-absorbing SRT and building its muscular reputation with the Challenger and Charger Hellcat models. Meanwhile, Chrysler is taking a more mainstream approach, and that likely means the end of overt high-performance models from the division for now.
According to Automotive News, the 300 SRT will be discontinued in the US for 2015, but it won't be totally dead. Some right-hand drive markets will still get the brawny V8 sedan next year, a distinction that goes a long way toward explaining some spy shots we've seen recently.
The 300 SRT's North American demise probably shouldn't come as a total shock. In FCA's five-year plan, it says that the 300 is destined for a refresh to be unveiled later this year, presumably at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. There's no mention of the SRT model in the document, though, which seems to signal its end.
