Up for sale is a 1971 Jeepster Commando 2-Door Station Wagon. It has good running 225 V6 Buick engine (3.7L) and an Automatic Transmission with only 71,582 original miles! Does NOT burn oil. It has the bucket seats and center console shifter. I recently rebuilt the carburetor, replaced the battery, replaced the distributor (along with points, wires, plugs, condenser, rotor and cap), and replaced the muffler and rear exhaust pipe. This thing now runs pretty well. The Jeep has locking hubs for the front wheels and four-wheel drive. Tires are in good shape. Automatic transmission shifts strong. The AM radio even works!

Last winter I picked up a Half Cab and bulkhead for the Jeepster. The bulkhead is currently installed, making the tops interchangeable! The Half Cab top is pretty rare and is worth close to $800 alone. The Station Wagon top has the sliding side windows and is in good shape (both tops are missing headliners). The Half Cab top gives the flexibility of using the Jeepster as a truck, of sorts, by creating a short bed. I rhino-lined the back area, but the back seat and seatbelts can still be bolted in when needed. Both the front seats and back seat have matching seat covers. The seats are worn but otherwise in relatively good shape. I just covered them so they wouldn't get any worse.

As with any 42-year-old rig, this one is not perfect. It has a very amateur paint job, mostly because the grill, left front fender, and hood were another color when I bought the Jeepster. I believe the fender and hood are from a 1967 Jeepster, so the fenders are not an exact match. The Jeep electrical system is old and temperamental (the dashboard illumination lights recently stopped working, for example). The ignition system has been changed over to a key and push button. There is some rust that will eventually need attention (front floorboards, the bottom of the tailgate and vicinity, one part of the Half Cab top drip rail, top of right front fender). The window and door seals will one day need to replaced, depending on how much you like the sound of rattling when you drive down the road. The rear window seal on the Half Cab has a gap at the bottom of the glass. And, there is that occasional clunk I've been hearing in the front end on sharp right turns. The brakes are good, but a brake booster would also make this a lot easier to stop.

Overall, a very solid classic builder that is driveable now, and gets plenty of thumbs-up. Great for winter and summer. Please email with questions.

NHTSA investigating why Jeep recall fix is taking so long

Jeep's saga with the National Traffic Safety Administration and the voluntary campaign to repair 1.56 million vehicles for allegedly unsafe trailer hitches, is getting yet another chapter. The controversy appeared to finally be over in January when the automaker found a supplier for the replacement parts. Nothing is ever that easy, though, and the government regulator is now requesting documents from the company to clarify why the repairs are taking so long to begin.
Jeep parent company Chrysler has until July 16 to submit documents and answers to NHTSA explaining the situation. The regulator claims that despite its compromise to inspect and repair the models with improper hitches in June 2013, Chrysler didn't find a part supplier until December and didn't order the replacements until January. The government agency believes that the first components weren't manufactured until May of this year and vehicles may not actually be repaired until as late as August. According to the report, if the Chrysler doesn't supply what NHTSA is asking for, the agency could "take additional appropriate action as warranted."
Throughout this entire process, Chrysler has asserted that the vehicles met the applicable crash test standards of the time, and it has kept NHTSA abreast of the repair activity. In a recently released statement it said that the regulator analyzed eight rear impact reconstruction tests and found the replacement hitch to be safe. To keep up with the high demand for replacements, Chrysler is working with multiple suppliers, and they are running three shifts, six days a week to get the parts ready as soon as possible.

Jeep Liberty replacement takes shape

Now that the Liberty has left us for greener pastures, it's time to start looking into the future of the midsize Jeep model. The next all-new vehicle for the off-road brand will be the SUV you see here, effectively replacing the Liberty, and not necessarily carrying on with that name.
From the sides, the prototype you see here sort of looks like a miniature version of the handsome Grand Cherokee, albeit with a bit more in the way of body sculpting. Up front, the seven-slat grille will be front and center, with completely revised headlamp designs that are reportedly angular and sweep well into the front fenders (you can sort of see what we're talking about in the side profile). That doesn't sound very Jeep-like, but we'll reserve judgment until we, you know, see the thing.
The bigger question with the Liberty replacement will be whether or not its off-road chops will be up to snuff. After all, the two previous generations of Liberty models were body-on-frame traditional SUVs, whereas this new Jeep rides on a larger version of the Dodge Dart platform.

Fiesta-sized Jeep coming in 2014

We've heard rumors before about a new, baby Jeep to slot below the new-for-2014 Cherokee (pictured) in the automaker's lineup. Now, Edmunds is reporting that the new crossover will arrive sometime in 2014, and will be about the same size as the Ford Fiesta. This currently unnamed vehicle will effectively replace both the Compass and Patriot in the Jeep lineup.
Speaking to Edmunds, Jeep CEO Mike Manley said that the new, small Jeep will be assembled in Italy and marketed globally beginning sometime next year. Manley did not provide many details on the new model, but did say that it will be 4.2-meters (165 inches) long. The Cherokee, by comparison, is 4.6-meters long (181 inches). Furthermore, Edmunds reports that while the new small Jeep will offer diesel power in other markets, there are no plans for an oil-burning version here in the US.
Many other automakers are exploring this smaller crossover segment here in the US. General Motors recently launched the Buick Encore, which is loosely based on the Chevrolet Sonic subcompact's platform. Ford has already launched its Fiesta-based EcoSport in other markets, and has reportedly been pondering the idea of offering it in the US, as well.
