Extremely rare ‘99 Range Rover Callaway edition, Epsom Green/gray interior, number 139 of 220, with 135K highway driven miles.    Even rarer this truck is one of the few Callaway models with the optional $3,000 factory navigation system.  I am the second owner of this truck with no accidents and extensive maintenance records ($10K +) from the top east coast Rover service specialists.   The only blemish of this immaculate vehicle is the lower corner of the passenger side front air dam came off in a snow drift which is easily/inexpensively fixed.   Fluids have been religiously changed and the vehicle has always been garaged.

Details on the 4.6 Callaway Edition

The high performance Callaway engine with 240 bhp at 5,000 rpm and peak torque of 285 lb.-ft at 3,500 rpm improved the 4.6 HSE acceleration 0-60 mph from 9.7 sec to 8.6 sec.  The Callaway 4.6 HSE sold for $75,000.

The "short block" of the engine is the same as other Land Rover 4.6 HSE models.  Short-blocks used for the 4.6L Callaway engines were stamped with a 9.60:1 compression ratio marking from Land Rover.   The increase of 0.25 points, up from the standard 4.6L compression ratio of 9.35:1 was achieved by a modification to the cylinder heads.  The cylinder heads were also modified to improve the airflow into and out of the combustion chambers.  The inlet manifold gasket front valley clamp has been changed to accommodate the heater hose positioning on the bottom front of the Callaway manifold. The ram pipe housing has been modified by shortening the ram pipe tube lengths.  The intake runner lengths were tuned to increase both power and torque.  The black plastic air inlet tube was replaced with a larger diameter fancy looking carbon fiber inlet tube to match the larger throttle bore in the plenum. The air cleaner box base was modified to increase the airflow.

The Callaway drivetrain was also modified.  The automatic transmission used in the Callaway 4.6 HSE Range has a different torque converter and the transmission control unit (TCU) has been recalibrated to take advantage of the increased torque and power of the engine. The shift points in both "NORMAL" and "SPORT" modes have been changed to match the engine's increased power.

The electronic shift transfer case has a new ratio sprocket set and chain. The resulting new ratios provide a high range ratio of 1.294:1, and a low range ratio of 3.481:1. The ratio change improves acceleration performance in high range while also providing improved off-road "crawl" performance and coast down rates in low range.

The front axle shafts used on the Callaway 4.6 HSE have been strengthened to withstand the increased torque to the front wheels from the engine and transmission changes. A material change in the axles ensures durability will be maintained for the front axle half shafts.

Callaway decided to use a four-pin front differential to accommodate the increased torque rather than the two-pin front diff used on standard production Range Rovers.  After working with Callaway on the four pin front diff Land Rover decided to put them in all of the 1999 Range Rovers since the 4 wheel traction control that added ABS regulated traction control to the front axle in 1999 also put extra stress on the front diff (Range Rovers from 1993-1998 only had traction control on the rear axle).

The Callaway dual exhaust had reduced backpressure and was similar to the dual exhaust that all NAS Range Rovers got in the 2000 model year. Changes to the exhaust system were made rearward of the catalyst "Y" pipe. The exhaust system backpressure was reduced by 43 percent, and the interior sound level in the passenger cabin was virtually unchanged.   The center silencer provides reduced backpressure and is constructed from stainless steel.   A twin tail pipe system was selected to provide a performance look and sound. The straight exit twin outlets are accented by T-304 stainless steel resonator tips to visually differentiate the Callaway 4.6 HSE from other Range Rovers.   The pipes are welded on to the stock mufflers and the rear bumper has cut outs for the tailpipes like it had in 1995 and 1996 (the stock single muffler pointed down and the rear bumper did not have any cut out on the 1997, 1998 and non-Callaway 1999 Range Rovers).  The exterior of the Callaway 4.6 HSE Range Rover is had painted body color components. The exterior components painted to match the body color are, the Entire Front Bumper cover, the Front Grill, Left and Right Headlamp trim, Left and Right Door Mirror Casings, Rear Bumper including area with Exhaust Tip Openings

The vehicles are badged with "CALLAWAY" on the upper engine plenum, on the lower rear tailgate under the 4.6 HSE logs, and Callaway stickers on the front fenders.
Inside, the Callaway RRs some had additional wood surrounding the power window switches and HVAC controls wood and leather steering wheels.
This model also comes standard with the "Proline" 18 inch 5-spoke alloy wheels.

Jaguar SUV mule doing Ring testing in Evoque clothes

Mon, 28 Apr 2014

Jaguar has moved its Range Rover Evoque-bodied tests of the production C-X17 Concept from icy streets to the legendary Nürburgring, as work continues on the brand's first SUV.
Really, there's not a great deal of new stuff here. Based on the number plates, this is a different vehicle from the one we saw back in March, which we originally identified as the upcoming replacement for the Land Rover Freelander/LR2. The details, though, appear largely the same. The biggest distinction we can see between the March tests and this are the US-spec headlights, which add amber reflectors at their sides. Based on these shots, it does seem as if the C-X17 should be a fairly poised road vehicle, as the engineers hustle it around the 'Ring.
Of course, as soon our spies can capture images of a production-bodied C-X17, we'll be sure to pass those on to you. Until then, take a look up top for images of the Range Rover-bodied Jaguar as it tests at Germany's Nürburgring. You can also scroll down for our March images for the C-X17 mules testing on public roads.

Brabus takes on Range Rover Sport with Startech widebody kit

Wed, 26 Feb 2014

Of all the tuners this side of AMG, none are as close to Mercedes-Benz as Brabus. After all, when Daimler needed a tuner to spruce up the Smart car, it was Brabus that it turned to. But Brabus tunes vehicles other than Mercedes - it just uses, let's call it, a pen name. It brands them Startech, like the widebody kit it's developed for the new Range Rover Sport and will present at the Geneva Motor Show next week.
The modifications center around the carbon fiber body panels Brabus (excuse us, Startech) has developed for the British sport-ute that give it over two inches of added width. The wider fender flares encompass 23-inch wheels that are forged, ceramic-coated, skinned with low-profile rubber and fitted to a lowered suspension. The front and rear bumpers have been redone in plastic and can be fitted with or without the wider fenders, and there's a three-piece roof spoiler at the back.
Startech is also offering an upgrade for the 3.0-liter twin-turbo-diesel V6 that squeezes out an extra 31 horsepower and 59 pound-feet of torque for a total of 323 hp and 501 lb-ft, dropping the 0-62 time from 7.2 seconds to 6.9. The German tuner also has a wide array of interior modifications on offer, details of which you can read about in the press release below and scope out in the high-resolution image gallery above.

Land Rover knows where you're going and how you want to get there

Thu, 10 Jul 2014

Land Rover makes some of the most capable SUVs on or off the road, and some of the most luxurious too. But the British automaker isn't about to rest on those laurels - not when every other automaker assaults its territory with sport-utes of their own. That's why Land Rover has been working so hard on nifty new technologies from a depth-sounder in the door mirror of the Range Rover Sport an augmented-reality head-up display that makes the whole front of the car virtually disappear.
JLR's newest tech may not be ground-breaking, but its integration promises to make driving around town that much easier. The system syncs with the driver's smartphone and uses all manner of parameters - including driver habits, weather and location as well as the presence of other passengers - to make the commute go as smoothly as possible. Get into the car and it'll set the seat and mirrors for you. No big deal, because lots of cars do that. But it'll also set up the nav system to take you to work and the sound system to play your favorite music. Okay, getting more interesting.
Get in with your kids and it'll know not only that you've got to drop them off at school first (or remind you to pack their gym bag if they've got soccer practice after school that day) but that they might not enjoy that Chumbawamba album you've been listening to since college and it'll play something it knows you'll all enjoy based on your listening history. Then it'll switch back to Tubthumping once the kids are out, remind you of your morning meeting and alert those you're scheduled to meet with if you get stuck in traffic while finding you a better route to get there, monitoring fuel levels all the while and telling you if you'll need to tank up before you reach your destination. It knows if you like calling your mother on the drive to work and will lower the air suspension to make it easier to hop out once you get there.
