1977 Lincoln Continental Town Car - Rust Free, Garaged Southwest Car on 2040-cars
Las Cruces, New Mexico, United States
1977 Lincoln Continental Town Car. This is an absolutely rust-free, garaged Southwest car in very good condition. 104,544 original miles. 400ci engine runs smooth, burns no oil. Transmission shifts smooth, brakes are good. All gauges and lights work correctly. Most functions work like they should with a few minor exceptions. Rear left door lock actuator does not work. A/C blows ice cold at idle or low rpm but quits blowing out the panel vents at 1/3rd throttle and switches to defrost under hard throttle. A/C compressor is good, no leaks – properly converted to R134. There is only one tiny crack in the dash on the extreme left corner that makes me think it was an impact, not sun damage. As with all 70’s Lincolns, the 6-way power seat switches work intermittently or not at all in some directions – the drivers seat goes back and forth with no problems. The Cartier clock keeps time. A woman in El Paso, Texas originally purchased the car. She drove it for many years and then parked it in her garage for many more years until her passing. Her son-in-law then sold it to a man in Las Cruces, NM who appreciated the comfort for a long commute to work. He enjoyed the cruiser until it developed an intermittent ignition problem and he sold the car to me. I replaced the ignition switch and that fixed the problem. I also had the car painted with all trim removed because it looked like the car had served as a storage shelf in the past. There was no serious body damage and there is no filler in the car aside from smoothing out a few dings. All of the trim was polished before reinstalling with new clips on the car. There is no pitting in the chrome and all the glass is very good. The front bumper is a replacement as the original had a bad dent. The replacement bumper is pretty good but not perfect. The interior is in very nice condition. The red velour seats and carpets still have deep color, no rips, tears or burns. The windows all work well, the radio works properly and even the 8-track plays without eating tapes. There are 2 small tears in the headliner above the backseat, included is a big piece of matching headliner material for repair. The trunk key has been lost to time, but the car has optional trunk release in the glove box. I installed new shocks, a fresh battery, replaced the ignition switch and changed the oil. Other than those items, I have done no mechanical work on the car, it would probably benefit from a tune up. The car is overall, very clean. This is a ’77 though it wears ’78 rear fender skirts. Apparently the car suffered a blowout on the rear left that tore up the original fender skirt. It also damaged the rear bracket so the solution was just bolt in ’78 skirts. I strive to be as honest and clear about the condition of the cars I sell on eBay. Please ask any questions you may have for informed bidding. I generally post all questions. The reserve is reasonable; bid to win. |

Mulally wanted to kill Lincoln as late as last year, Fields vows to turn it around
Mon, 30 Jun 2014Lincoln fans might want to give incoming Ford CEO Mark Fields a pat on the back for having a hand in saving the brand from the chopping block last year. He's among the people spearheading the rejuvenation of the division away from its stodgy image to appeal to younger customers.
According to two unnamed sources speaking to Bloomberg, CEO Alan Mulally was ready to kill Lincoln last year. Following the slow production ramp-up of the MKZ combined a with a costly ad campaign, Mulally was frustrated and openly suggested dropping the brand. However, Fields and Jim Farley, Ford's marketing boss, convinced the CEO that the brand was worth saving. They also created a plan to prevent similar problems for new models in the future.
It seems that one part of the strategy may involve waiting until new models are at dealers before starting a big ad campaign for them. Lincoln global director, Matt VanDyke, recently told Autoblog that the division is holding off on a full marketing push behind the new MKC crossover to prevent the supply problems that plagued the MKZ last year. Its big offensive begins in the fall when the CUVs are at all of the dealers and consumers are at home watching more TV. VanDyke also told Bloomberg that Fields, Farley and Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of the Americas, have more direct oversight over new product launches now.
Possible MKX concept teased as Lincoln confirms China expansion
Thu, 17 Apr 2014We've been speculating for years about the future of Lincoln. Some thought that Ford needed to kill the division like it did Mercury, while others saw the sales possibility in a brand with so much history. Ford has finally made a decision, and it wasn't what many people were expecting. Lincoln is launching in China this fall, with the brand rollout starting at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show. A new video hints that we might even get to see the concept for the next-generation MKX.
Lincoln is marketing itself in China as a customer-focused, high-end luxury ownership experience. To prove it, the Lincoln Space in Beijing is meant both as a prototype dealer and a grand show of its plans. The modernist structure looks more like an art museum than a car showroom, and the interior decor is like a high-end hotel lobby. The company says that every dealer is going to have license plate recognition technology that knows when an owner arrives, and there will also be a Personalization Studio where potential buyers can design their car with family. Lincoln is promising to have eight showrooms ready in seven cities by this fall.
Of course, a stylish showroom is nothing without cars to sell. Lincoln is promising five models on sale in China by 2016. The MKZ and MKC launch this fall. A midsize luxury SUV, a fullsize luxury sedan and the Navigator are coming later. All of the models sold there are being imported from North America.
Ellen DeGeneres sends up Matthew McConaughey's Lincoln ad
Mon, 29 Sep 2014Lincoln had to have known that when it released its new ad campaign for the new MKC with Matthew McConaughey, it would open itself up to a bit of good old fashioned ridicule. The television commercial was, after all, good for a laugh or two. And true to their mission, talk show hosts haven't missed the opportunity to have a little fun at Lincoln's and McConaughey's expense.
Conan O'Brien was first to send up the television spot, but now Ellen DeGeneres has taken a stab at it too, superimposing herself in the back seat of the compact luxury crossover, downing some pot brownies and generally playing Costello to McConaughey's Abbott. It's worth a watch, if only to see Ellen getting down in her usual, offbeat style.
