1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo - 40th Anniversary #71 of 88 made. 2.2 Turbo

I purchased this car with the intention of bringing the car back to 100% but recent financial difficulties have changed my priorities.  The car was last inspected and on the road in 2007 and has been garaged kept since.

The body and paint are 98% perfect and almost flawless.  There are some scuff marks under the front faring but only noticeable from under the car.  One headlight motor is not working.  I have a cross reference for a new one.  I have not looked at it so it may be something simple.

The interior is about 80%.  Is missing the horn button and the emergency brake and fuel door releases need to be repaired.  It also looks like the trim under the column is missing.  There is one small tear where you would rest your elbow.  Someone stole the amplifier out from under the bonnet so there are some loose wires there and the radio does not power up.  It has a hard wired front and rear radar detector but its probably out dated.

The engine compartment is beautiful and clean.  From my estimation this engine has had to be out of the car.  I have looked at about a dozen of these cars and none were this clean.  It is missing one carpet piece on the boot floor and the cover for the Relays.  These are simple to replicate.  The engine had not been started in a few years.  I took the time to properly lube the cylinders and cam shafts.  I rotated the engine by hand, changed the oil and primed the oil pump prior to starting the car.  I also drained both tanks and remarkably the fuel was not too bad.  It fired right up and there was no visible smoke whatsoever.  Upon the first test drive the turbo over-boosted and the engine management system quickly retarded the engine properly.  I pulled it back in and removed the turbo waste gate.  It was frozen and the diaphragm was torn.  I found a used one and rebuilt it, reground the valve seat and reinstalled it.  The car now runs and boosts properly.   WOW what a thrill to drive.  The transmission shifts properly through all of the gears.  The vacuum pump is making racket and the brakes are stiff so it will need to be replaced.  I have the NAPA part number so no worries about finding one.

I carefully inspected the timing belt and it appeared to be good but recommend replacing prior to putting on the racetrack.  It appeared that the prior owner took exceptionally good care of this car.  It looks like they have replaced many of the water hoses with silicone hoses.  I think it has an aftermarket muffler I think it is an "Offenhauser"???

The tires look like new but clearly are at least 6 years old so your call on them.  I would love to finish this car but am a single dad and just need my money back out of it.  Feel free to call me to discuss any other details. 703-898-7511  I have listed everything I can remember about the car.

I have this for sale through many other publications so if it may sell there first.  I am sorry if this happens.  2 people have come and looked at it and both were over 6' 1" tall.  They did not fit!  If you are over 6' tall you might want to reconsider unless you are going to drive with the Glass roof removed.

Please no scams.  I will need cash or a cashiers check. The bank cashiers check will need to be verified prior to releasing the car or title.  No exceptions.  I have been through the fake check thing before and wont do that again.  I would also ask that for 2 checks for any amount over $10,000 so there wont be a long waiting time for them to clear.  Thank you for understanding this prior to buying.

Lotus spotted testing more extreme Elise on the Nordschleife

Tue, 19 Aug 2014

If we had a nickel for every version of the Elise that Lotus has rolled out over the years, we might actually have enough spare change to buy one ourselves. And we're not even talking about the entire separate models (like the Exige and Europa) that Lotus has based on the Elise's platform or the other automakers' cars (like the Tesla Roadster and Hennessey Venom GT) that have used the same. And now Lotus appears to be testing another one.
Spotted lapping the Nürburgring, what we're looking at here appears to be the track-bound Elise S Cup R, but our intrepid paparazzi by the side of the track tell us it's missing the switches for the battery isolator and fire extinguisher. In their place, this Elise is wearing an even bigger rear wing as part of an altogether rather aggressive aero kit - not to mention a rockin' matte red wrap.
All of these telltales make us think Lotus has something extreme in the works, and we could find out what exactly it is as early as the Paris Motor Show in October, so stay tuned and watch this space.

Jay Leno goes old school with 1966 Lotus Elan 26R

Mon, 31 Mar 2014

On the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage the guest's are both from inside the garage: the man they call Professor Jim Hall, Leno's master fabricator, and the 1966 Lotus 26R that he spent 18 months building. The Elan 26R was the racing version of the Elan that Lotus founder Colin Chapman began building after watching privateer teams prep their roadgoing Elans for competition duty all over Europe. Built by the factory from 1964-1966, drivers like Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart won silverware in the roadster called "the giant killer."
Hall, a veteran Lotus wrench, started with the 1966 Elan street car and turned it into a 26R that's arguably better than the factory original. Except for the engine block and head, original 26R body and Elan chassis, just about everything is custom built, highly modified or special order, from the fabricated oil pan, brake lines, safety wiring and oval exhaust tubing to the six-speed sequential transmission.
The episode is an unusually-long 21 minutes because, as an in-house build, Leno can go through the process of putting the whole roadster together. When he takes it for a drive and keeps going on about how it sings, you can hear it, too. It's worth the time to check out Mr. Hall's Opus in the video below.

Lotus drops Renault for Mercedes F1 engines

Tue, 08 Jul 2014

With only three manufacturers supplying engines in Formula One this season, the teams have been fairly evenly split: Ferrari, Sauber and Marussia use Ferrari engines; Mercedes, McLaren, Williams and Force India run on Mercedes power; Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Lotus and Caterham employ Renault power units. But one important team is reportedly preparing to ditch Renault and switch to Mercedes for next year.
That team is Lotus, an outfit which has fallen off its pace the past few seasons but which has still been a vital partner for Renault. That's because until a few seasons ago, the team based in Enstone, UK, was owned by Renault and bore the company's name. The operation was founded in 1981 as Toleman, was rechristened Benetton in 1986, bought by Renault 2000, taking the company's name in 2002, sold to its current owners Genii Capital 2009 and adopting the black and gold Lotus livery in 2011. As Benetton, it ran Ford engines until switching to Renault in 1995, sticking with the French outfit ever since, but that decades-long partnership - which meandered through Renault ownership and back out again - is now apparently drawing to a close.
The departure of Lotus as a customer team ought to allow Renault to focus instead on its increasing ties with Red Bull, which has taken the Enstone team's place as Renault's principal team. It could prove a smart move for the Lotus team as well, as the Mercedes engines have been outperforming the Renault units this season by an order of magnitude: not only is Mercedes far outpacing Red Bull at the top of the standings, but each of Mercedes' customer teams is performing better than Renault's clients.
