I'm offering for sale my delightful 1984 Caterham Super Seven Sprint. I bought it with just over 2000 miles on it and have doubled that in the last year. I'm selling this car to fund my Lotus Elan S-2 that is in bits. Otherwise I'd never sell it.
I've always loved early Lotus Sevens with they're delicate simplicity and while I like the newer Caterhams I have to admit that they are just too far removed from the original concept. Big seats, huge roll bars and 200 HP+ just isn't my thing. Not on the street anyways. Which is what attracted me to this car. It's very much like an old Lotus Seven ; bench seat, solid axle, rear drum brakes,big front wings, maybe 120 HP. Yet it's really like a new old Lotus , just 4200 miles. Nothing is worn out, rusted or beat to hell. Actually the engine is just broken in. When I bought the car I replaced all perishables, mainly hoses and changed all the fluids ( synthetic in the trans. and diff. ). Even the tires are the 5 original Goodyear Grand Prix ( made in England no less ). I know what your thinking about they're age, but they look great, I can't find any defects and Sevens only run 18psi. The car is French Blue and the paint is nice with small nicks and chips hear and there. There is a small area on the bonnet that has been repaired, but it's hardly noticeable. The interior is great, the only thing I notice is all the rocker switches are slightly faded ( they are cheap and available in England ). The car comes with all it's weather equipment; wind wings, side curtains, top, full and half tonneaus. Tool kit and jack. Optional heater ( very warm ). I also have every piece of paperwork from the original owner that I bought it from It spent most of it's life in Reno. Correspondence with Caterham, Order slips, Options ordered, the boat it was shipped on, etc., etc. It's a 4 speed car with 4th being pretty tall ( 2700 rpm at 60mph I think ), it's an Escort Sport box. The engine is a gem, pulls great, not fussy at all, great oil pressure and runs cool even in traffic. The exhaust is unusual in that it exits at the rear of the car rather than the side, but that's the way it came. The brakes are perfect and as you would imagine it handles superb. Adjustable Spax all round. It's a treat to drive and you could drive it anywhere, the car needs nothing. Buyer is responsible for Shipping. I will help any way I can. Lotus to layoff a quarter of its workforce
Thu, 18 Sep 2014Lotus has issued a press release to day, wherein it indicates that a "need to both reshape its organisation and to reduce costs" may result in the loss of "up to 325" jobs. That's a fairly significant number of layoffs for any company, but considering that Lotus currently employs 1,215 people (per the company's bio in the same release), it could mean a full 25-percent of the automaker's workers could soon be sharpening their resumes.
CEO Jean-Marc Gales says in the statement that Lotus has "worked very hard to avoid the need to make this proposal," but admits that it is now "essential" to the future of the company. The chief indicates that post-restructuring, he expects Lotus to be a "leaner" and "more competitive" organization, one which - and we can all see a little silver lining here - is focused on "producing class-leading sports cars and innovative engineering."
The 325-job number appears to be soft at this point, with the statement indicating that some negotiation about which and how many posts will be cut is yet to come. Further, the company may "redeploy" some employees, and may even recruit new blood for "key roles," all with an eye toward running the strongest possible team going forward. Though, we imagine that the recruitment bit won't fly well for those employees getting the sack.
Lotus to receive $16M government grant
Mon, 25 Nov 2013Troubled British automaker Lotus is getting a second infusion of cash following a 100-million-pound ($161.5-million) investment by its parent company DRB-Hicom that was made in August. The substantially smaller investment, a mere 10 million pounds ($16.2 million), comes from the British government's Regional Growth Fund.
The fund, which is part of a 3-billion-pound ($4.8-billion) fund to spur economic growth in the UK, will allow Lotus to invest even further in research and development as it seeks to reinvent its lineup of lightweight sports cars. The fund will also allow the UK-based outfit to provide further training for its new crop of employees.
"This grant is part of a wider strategy for Lotus created to ensure we thrive and grow. We are responding to increased global demand for our cars and engineering consultancy services and this grant will help to position Lotus as the forefront of global automotive innovation," said Aslam Farikullah (shown above with UK Business Secretary Vince Cable MP), the chief operating officer at Lotus.
Lotus team out of Le Mans, full driver list published
Tue, 20 May 2014We can scratch off one more car from the list for the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Lotus T129 LMP1 car has been dropped from the entry list of the 82nd running of the historic race, with organizers citing "a lack of preparation" as the reason. On a more positive note, the list of 168 drivers in 56 vehicles has been officially published for the June 14 race.
Like the Lotus team currently in Formula One, the Lotus T129 uses the iconic British brand's name and colors but is actually built by a separate company. It previously ran a Lola chassis in the LMP2-class (pictured above). The Le Mans organizers claim the car will likely be on display during the 24-hour race, but it won't make it's competition debut until the World Endurance Championship round at the Circuit of the Americas in September. The T129 is being replaced by an Oreca 03 chassis with Nissan power in the LMP2 class, entered by Millennium Racing.
The Lotus' retirement came as the teams had to send in the names of the three drivers nominated to race each car. This year there are racers from 26 countries with the most coming from France (39), Britain (29), the US (17) and Italy (15). The latest tally of entries breaks down to 9 LMP1s, 19 LMP2s, 9 LM GTE Pros, 18 LM GTE Ams and the Nissan ZEOD RC as the experimental Garage 56 entry.
