Maserati Biturbo Spyder 1986 Black/tan on 2040-cars

I have kept my Biturbo Spyder in a climate-controlled garage with temperature stabilization and air filtration (keep pollen out, etc.) .  But that's not all. I have also taken exceptional good care of it.  As a result, the car's overall condition is spectacularly good and not not just for its age.

This is a 1986 Biturbo Spyder with dual turbos.  It has a 2.5 Liter V6 engine.  Odometer reads 52,390.

It's easy to make sweeping statements about the car's condition - but as we all know - the devil is in the detail.  I am willing to provide as much detail as possible, so here's a go at it.

The condition of the chassis is extraordinarily good.  To begin with, the car is rust-free thanks to climate-controlled storage.  It has made a world of difference.  No body panel has rust or any corrosive damage.  The car has been carefully examined.  The car has never been in an accident.  There is no frame damage or stress of any kind.    It has not been stored in, or exposed to cold weather.  The condition of the paint does reflect its age (as seen under ultraviolet light).  However, the shine remains superb thanks to relying on Zymol "Ital" glaze with 47% Brazilian carnauba wax.  One of my photos shows the 20 foot ceiling's reflection on the hood.  This wax resists just about anything including sun damage.  Inspection of rear view mirrors mounted on the doors shows excellent condition of the plastic, trim, and mirror.  The plastic rear window is also clear and the stitching has no defect.

The interior of the car is also excellent.  Take note of the condition of the instrument cowl, and the wood trim (crisp edges and no warping or fading).  The convertible top fits nicely but is a bit tight-ftting at this time (needs use to loosen it up).  The seats are in very good condition.  Not just relative for their age, but very good - period.  The plastic in the a/c vents and control buttons is sound but may be developing brittleness (they are coated with "conditioners" to keep them safe).  The windshield glass is superb.  Clean etched lines.  Excellent visibility.  No nicks or damage.  The windows are in very good condition.

The wheels are in very good condition with minor signs of wear and tear.  The tires are in good shape.

The electricals are in good condition thanks to climate-controlled storage.  I include a photo of a circuit board to give you a detailed viewpoint.

The car has just had its oil sump cleaned out completely (it had no sludge).  The oil filter is new.  The air filter is new and I have another one.

Here's the bottom line: you can "save" money by buying a cheaper car only to spend more money returning it to good condition rather than buying this excellent car.  Why waste time and money "restoring" to normal operation?  Take this car to a higher level of performance instead.

I am putting together a detailed report with more photos so that I can email to interested bidders.

Nearly forgot to mention - brand new Sears DieHard Platinum battery $229.99 with 850 cold cranking amps & high performance features.

Ram/Jeep Ecodiesel engine has Maserati roots

Sun, 16 Mar 2014

The 3.0L turbodiesel V6 in the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel earned a slot on Ward's Automotive 2014 10 Best Engines for its power, fuel economy and refinement. In a piece looking at how Fiat subsidiary VM Motor developed the engine, Ward's also makes note of the fact that the same lump goes in diesel versions of the Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli. They're tuned a bit differently, naturally, with the QP putting out 275 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, the smaller, lighter Ghibli making do with the same number of horses but a lower torque output of 420 lb-ft.
The 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet put out by the oil-burning six-cylinder in the Ram was tamed with a host of advances, but it appears that Ram hasn't tamed demand: the initial allocation of 8,000 engines was spoken for within three days of the truck going on sale. Head over to Ward's to read the story of how Ram worked out the equation light-duty-pickup + diesel = success.

Share price falls on skepticism of Chrysler-Fiat five-year plan

Thu, 08 May 2014

Following this week's Fiat Chrysler extravaganza, where the Italian-American manufacturer announced its plans for the next five years, the Autoblog staff was cautiously optimistic of the company's future. Investors? Not so much.
Fiat saw its shares tumble 12 percent in Wednesday's trading, falling from 8.67 euros ($12.06 at today's rates) to 7.44 euros ($10.35) as of this writing, with blame partly going to the Italian half of the FCA marriage, which recorded a pretty significant drop in profits during the first quarter of this year.
The plan, which will cost around $77 billion over the next several years, is facing criticism from investors thanks in part to a 1.4-percent drop in Fiat's first-quarter profits, to 622 million euros ($862 million). That figure is also short of Bloomberg analysts' projections, which predicted $1.18 billion in profits before taxes, interest and one-time items.

Why Italians are no longer buying supercars

Wed, 08 May 2013

Italy is the wound that continues to drain blood from the body financial of Italian supercar and sports car makers. The wound was opened by the country's various financial police who decided to get serious about superyacht-owning and supercar-driving tax cheats a few years ago, by noting their registrations and checking their incomes. When it was found that a rather high percentage of exotic toy owners had claimed a rather low annual income - certain business owners were found to be declaring less income than their employees - the owners began dumping their cars and prospective buyers declined to buy.
Car and Driver has a piece on how the initiative is hitting the home market the hardest. Lamborghini sold 1,302 cars worldwide in 2010, 1,602 cars in 2011 and 2,083 cars in 2012 - an excellent surge in just two years. In Italy, however, it's all about the ebb: in 2010, the year that Italian police began scouring harbors, Lamborghini sold 96 cars in Italy, the next year it sold 72, last year it sold just 60. The declines for Maserati and Ferrari are even more pronounced.
Head over to CD for the full story and the numbers. What might be most incredible isn't the cause and effect, but where the blame is being placed. A year ago the chairman of Italy's Federauto accused the government of "terrorizing potential clients," this year Luca di Montezemolo says what's happening has created "a hostile environment for luxury goods." Life at the top, it ain't easy.
