2001 Mazda MPV Minivan
Mileage: Approximately 99,000

**Maintenance Summary -
Routine oil changes every 5,000 miles.
Transmission Flush every 45,000.  (Two flushes so far over the life of the vehicle) - No varnish buildup in transmission gearbox or torque converter.
Coolant flush every 6 seasons (3 year intervals - California seasons consist of "Hot" and "Cooler").  New radiator installed in February of 2011.

**Wearable items Maintenance -
New tires in January of 2012 - Approximately 7,000 miles since replacement - rotated after 5,000 miles when I put new brakes on.
New Battery, headlights and brake lights in Summer of 2012
New Brakes in September of 2012 (Approximately 2,000 miles since replacement)

** DAMAGE to Car
Rear passenger side door - scraped and slightly dented
Other small little dings in front passenger door (size of a penny)

** Corrective Maintenance needed to be performed:
The van has a slight coolant leak.  I am not sure exactly where its coming from, but I suspect the water pump.  Our plan is to keep the expansion tank filled (with de-mineralized water) until we plan to get rid of the car.  I have been checking the coolant reservoir every week to make sure levels are where they need to be.

**Overall interior appearance
The interior has aged quite well.  We perform an annual steam clean of the carpets immediately following the summer beach season.

**General Ride and Comfort
The ride of the car is quite smooth.  The alignment is perfect and both air conditioning units (front and rear) work great.  I replace the cabin filter every four years and there is no mildew smell at all out of the vents when the A/C units are used.  The onboard entertainment system works  well (VHS tape player) and the radio/CD player system does too.  the minivan has custom OEM rims sized for P205/65/R15 tires and has lived in a garage for approximately 9 1/2 out of the 11 years we have owned the vehicle; so the paint job isn't oxidized.

The Cure For The Common Corolla
I hate the Toyota Corolla. I'm not talking about the new 2014 model; I can't yet judge a car I haven't driven. I'm referring to the current, old-as-dirt sedan. As an appliance, I get why people buy it, but it represents everything that I, as a car enthusiast, dislike. I don't like looking at it, I don't like sitting in it, and I really don't like driving it. There is absolutely no amount of emotion dialed into any part of the Corolla experience and every other vehicle in the segment is a far better choice. But still, somehow, Toyota sells 'em like hotcakes.
Thankfully, there are a lot of people who agree with me. And for folks like us, companies like Mazda exist. This small Japanese automaker places emotion and driver involvement as its top priorities when creating new products, and mostly - especially in recent years - the end results have been great. The new CX-5 crossover is a doll, to say nothing of the rakish and lovely new Mazda6 that launched earlier this year. And let's not forget the Miata...

Honda, Nissan and Mazda recalling 3 million vehicles for airbag inflators

Mon, 23 Jun 2014

Three million more vehicles can be added to the worldwide tally to be repaired for the faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata. Honda, Nissan, and Mazda have all issued recalls to replace the bad part, including about 1.2 million of them in North America. NHTSA has been investigating all three companies, plus Chrysler and Toyota, for potentially affected vehicles.
Honda is recalling roughly 1.02 million Civic, CR-V, Odyssey and Element models In North America, built between April 2000 and October 2002. Mazda needs to repair 14,794 units of the RX-8 and Mazda6, and Nissan has 228,000 vehicles in North America to be fixed.
Chrysler is also starting what it calls a "regional field action" to replace the inflators in the 2006 Dodge Charger, according to a company spokesperson. The company says that it has not yet found the problem in any of its vehicles, but it's being done "out of an abundance of caution." The final number of Chargers affected will be announced later this week.

Next Mazdaspeed3 could go naturally aspirated?

Fri, 12 Jul 2013

The new Mazda3 is a stunner, both aesthetically and from a driving perspective. As with all good things, though, there's always room for improvement. That's where the wizards from Mazdaspeed come in. Mazda's in-house tuner has been tweaking and turbocharging the five-door Mazda3 since 2007, with impressive results.
We've shown you renderings of what the third-generation Mazdaspeed3 could look like, and for the most part your response was quite positive. Now, AutoExpress has come out with details of just what might be under that long hood. According to our friends across the pond, the new Mazda3 MPS (that's what the Speed3 is called in Her Majesty's auto industry) will be arriving with a new, high-revving, naturally aspirated engine. Wait, what?
Yes, if the rumors are to be believed, the next Mazdaspeed3 will ditch its turbocharger. According to an anonymous engineer, the new MS3 will arrive in December (this is for the UK market, mind you) with a 200-horsepower, naturally aspirated engine. The 2.0-liter mill is based on the Skyactiv engine in the new 3, and should be capable of a sub-seven-second run to 62 miles per hour.
