66k Miles, Volk Te37, Hardtop, 6-speed Trans, Limited Slip, Race Clutch & More on 2040-cars
Brooklyn, New York, United States
The car was never driven in winter and has little to no rust. I'm the 3rd owner and have it since 2011. Bought it with 62k on the clock and only put another 4k miles in 3 years on it. Car was bought completely stock (other than short ram intake) from a gentlemen in his 50s who had 4 more other cars and was driving miata on a very rare occasions. The original owner was his friend who owned it for the first 3 or 4 years. The car is in a really good shaped - the one you would expect from a car with just 66k, never driven & garaged in winter through it's entire life and well taken care of. The car is my joy ride which I basically only drive on the weekends. The only thing that needs attention is paint - I polished the car after I got it and the paint layer became very thin so the car currently has a few minor scratches here and there. There are a couple of minor dents as well. I was looking to repaint the car entirely, so the issue wasn't addressed. The car will be sold with a factory hardtop which also has some paint chips. There was no corners cut or expense spared maintaining or modifying the car. I purchased the car as I always wanted cabriolet for the summer. Then I made a few mods to make it more enjoyable to drive. The car had never been to track or auto-x. I had all modes documented on my old pc, but HDD died and I never recovered the list so I might be forgetting something. All modes were professionally installed by a good friend of mine who is a well known mechanic & diagostics specialist in my area. Maintence: - Oil changed every spring at the beginning of the season with full syntetic mobil 1 5w30 - Timing belt (oem), spark plugs (NGK irridium), spark plug wires (NGK), brake fluid (motul rbf600) & battery (oem) were replaced when I got the car in 2011 Modes list (all modes were done by me and have less than 3 years / 4k miles on them): - Rays engineering Volk Racing TE-37 15x7 white rims with 205/50/15 Dunlop Direzza Star Spec tires (purchased in 2011, have around 4k miles on them) - Rays red valve stems, Rays Formula hub caps, Rays extended red lug nuts - Boss Frog Clearview Single Hoop rollbar painted flat white - NB 6-speed Mazdaspeed Miata transmission purchased with around 25k miles on it, currently sitting at around 28k - NB 4.1 limited slip rear differential with currently around 5k miles on it - Energy Suspension rear diff bushings - Mazda competition motor mounts - 949 Racing Twin Disc organic race clutch - Upgraded clutch master & slave cylinders, stainless steel clutch hose - Flyin' Miata cannon rear subframe brace - Flyin' Miata full butterfly brace - I'm probably forgetting something since the original mode list is gone |

2014 Mazda6: July/August 2013
Thu, 05 Sep 2013Our newest long-termer - the Soul Red 2014 Mazda6 seen here - arrived in my driveway at the end of June. Without hesitation, I immediately put it to work as a daily driver, carpool bus and family vacation sled, and it accomplished all of those tasks with aplomb. Now, more than 4,000 miles down the road, I am left convinced that Mazda's latest midsize sedan is one of the best in its segment.
During the past 60 days, I have subjected the Mazda6 to scorching travel across Southwestern deserts, wheezing climbs over 8,000-foot-high Sierra Nevada mountain passes and basking in the cool ocean breezes of Malibu. It traveled with four passengers and a full load of luggage from Los Angeles to Lake Tahoe, and it braved the bumper-to-bumper freeway congestion on a weekday trip down to San Diego. It accomplished everything that was asked of while hardly skipping a beat - it has only required a regular sip of unleaded fuel to keep it moving forward.
Mazda hard at work on Skyactiv 2 engine technology
Wed, 08 Jan 2014As Mazda continues the current rollout of its still-new Skyactiv technology, the automaker is already looking at improving its family of engines for even better fuel economy and emissions reductions. Automotive News reports that with stricter fuel economy and emissions regulations planned for 2020 and 2025 in Europe, Mazda will likely release engines with next-generation Skyactiv 2 technology by the end of this decade, and Skyactiv 3 units just five years later.
The latter is expected to focus on improved engine cooling and lessening energy losses, but the big news in AN's report is that the next-gen Skyactiv 2 engines will use Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, or HCCI. This type of ignition is very similar to how a diesel engine operates (with high compression and using the compression stroke for fuel combustion rather than spark plugs), a method said to provide a cleaner and more efficient fuel burn - to the tune of a 30-percent improvement in fuel economy compared to current Skyactiv engines. Other automakers, including Hyundai, have already announced they are developing HCCI powerplants with similar technology and characteristics, so Mazda likely won't be a lone wolf here.
Equipped with HCCI technology, Mazda figures to be able to compete with larger automakers in terms of fuel economy and emissions without resorting to hybrid powertrains, continuously variable transmissions or automatics relying on more forward gears (eight or more) for optimal efficiency. Some of the challenges of HCCI, according to AN, include the need for better engine cooling, risk of misfire at high and low rpm and uneven engine performance based on fuel properties.
Mazda3, CX-5 earn IIHS Top Safety Picks
Thu, 17 Jan 2013Mazda technologies like SkyActiv-Body and SkyActiv-Chassis, plus ultra-high-tensile steel, six airbags, "crusable" brake and accelerator pedal assembly and collapsible steering column have helped the 2013 Mazda3 and 2014 Mazda CX-5 win Top Safety Pick laurels from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It's the second year in a row for the Mazda3.
The accolade is earned by receiving "Good" marks for frontal moderate overlap crashes, side and rear impact crashes, and tests of roof strength. Remember, the small overlap test that the IIHS commenced in August 2012 has lately tripped up some makers who have excellent safety reputations.
The Mazda3 and CX-5 join offerings like the Dodge Dart, Hyundai Elantra, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Subaru Forester among the 117 vehicles so far declared Top Safety Picks - which is different than the 13 named Top Safety Picks+, mind you - for this year. Have a read of the press release below for more information.
