Up for auction here is a 1991 Mazda Miata convertible.  Always adult driven.

The Good:
-Engine runs fine, no issues here.  Starts every time, idles normally, revs smoothly.  Still averaging 30-34 MPG on country roads.  No smoke or weird noises.
-Transmission is working fine as well.  Shifts are crisp and positive.  Clutch was replaced at 104,000 miles and works great.
-Brakes are in good shape.  Recent new front calipers and rotors.  New brake lines to the rear about a year ago. Stops straight.
-The interior is in pretty good shape, not perfect but pretty nice for a 23-year old daily driver.
-New alternator last year.
-New battery in 2012
-New fuel pump in 2011.

The Bad:
-It's going to need a front end alignment.  It veers a little to the right.
-The air conditioning will need a charge.
-The power steering is not functional.  It's drive-able but takes some arm strength when going slow.  The pump will need to be replaced if you don't like the workout.  No fan belt noises though.
-The front tires should probably be replaced soon.  One of the back tires is less than a year old and the other might be around three years old.
-The oil pressure gauge is not functional.

The Ugly:
-The headlights don't sit right in the down position so I just leave them up.  Could be an easy fix, I don't know. I haven't really been bothered by it.
-While the top is in generally good condition, the back window is not.  It is going to need to be replaced.  Look at the pictures.
-Leather shifter boot is torn.
-It's rusty.

This has been a very dependable and fun car for over ten years.  I have had very few problems with it and most of the issues are wear related.  The motor has never been modified.  The car has never been raced.  No boyracer fast and furious nonsense.  Regular oil changes with full synthetic.  If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I would encourage you to try and see the car before making a bid.  There will be no refunds.  This is a 23-year old car so know what you're bidding on.  You must come and pick up the car.  It is completely drive-able so no need for a trailer.  But I can help you get it on a trailer if that is how you want to pick it up.  I can hold the car as long as it is paid in full.  Talk to me.  I am quite free until October 1st.  Then I get busy.  Try to get the car before then.  Thanks for looking!

2013 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year finalists announced [w/poll]

Wed, 12 Dec 2012

2012 is almost in the books and automakers are spending December gearing up for the 2013 auto show season, which tips off next month at the Detroit Auto Show. Traditionally, the latter opens up with the announcement of the North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year awards, and this year figures to be no different.
But up until this moment, we didn't know which six vehicles would be parked ahead of the stage as finalists, with executives and engineers waiting for the winners to be disclosed. Whittled down from October's "short list" of nominees (11 cars and 10 truck/utility vehicles), the finalists are as follows:

Mazda 16X rotary engine two years away, will arrive in all-new model

Fri, 16 Aug 2013

We last reported on Mazda's next-generation rotary engine project in June of 2012 when the automaker built its last Renesis-powered RX-8, but rumors of this new engine's development had been around way before that final car left the production line in Japan, last year.
We now have enthusiastic confirmation that this next-gen rotary engine is really and truly going forward. It is still referred to as 16X and has several priorities. First is to lower fuel consumption compared to the RX-8's engine, while still making gains in terms of performance. The second is to reduce the burning of oil that was happening at the highest revs. And the third and final priority, and perhaps most key for enthusiasts, is to give the powertrain a big torque upgrade.
What we were told by a Mazda USA insider (while we are all here together at the festivities in Monterey) is that the first application of the new 16X engine will be happening in two years' time in an as yet undisclosed new model. Oh, the mind races to our eternal Mazda wish list...

Mazda's awesome Hiroshima museum now navigable by Google Maps

Fri, 15 Mar 2013

Visiting an auto museum is one of the best ways we know to connect with car culture and to commune with the past and bone up on one's knowledge. Most of us have a decent museum within a few hours drive of where we live, but that doesn't mean it's easy to see the world's great collections - factors like cost, time and mobility can get in the way. Videos are great, but they don't allow us to browse at our own pace or choose what we'd like to focus on. The folks behind Google Maps have a solution - the virtual museum tour, as seen here at Mazda's fantastic museum in Hiroshima, Japan.
The Google Maps tour allows viewers to take a walk through the main exhibition area of the museum, and you can focus on specific classic cars from Mazda, or check out displays featuring new technologies like Skyactiv. To take a quick spin through the museum - or a leisurely stroll at your own pace - scroll down to start your own virtual tour.
