I'm selling a collector car project at a fraction of parts value. Not for the faint of heart.  This auction includes two cars and all associated parts.  Both cars are in a state of disassembly as follows:

The first car is a 65 250SE Sunroof Coupe. It has been completely disassembled for a professional quality restoration. Over $8,000 was spent for OEM replacement sheet metal panels, plus another $10,000 for fitting and body finishing. This car is a 100% rust-free California car with a substantial start on a quality restoration.

The gaps are perfect and the door jambs, engine bay, and entire underside of car have been refinished to correct original standards (through consultation with Mercedes Benz Classic Center). The overhauled engine and transmission, driveline, rear end, brakes, and suspension components, were then reinstalled using new OEM hardware. Much is left to be done, as the interior is out of the car, and all the wiring needs to be done. Included is a new correct complete leather interior (Hirsch), professionally re-veneered and complete interior wood set (Madera Concepts), new carpet set, headliner, one seat pad, new steering wheel and horn ring, rubber seal set, extensive completed chrome work including bumpers, door sills, door frame trim, seat hardware, headlight bezels, etc. Also included is a new OEM windshield, and complete exhaust system. The speedometer, tachometer and clock were restored by Palo Alto Speedometer.  The Europa radio was restored by Walter Odemer Co.  I believe the car is 100% complete except for hubcaps.

Receipts for this car total over $44,000 spent to date, excluding the initial acquisition cost of the car, and are included with the sale.

The second car is a 65 220SEb sunroof coupe. It was a running driving car 5 years ago, when it was mechanically freshened after a long period of sitting. Work included cleaning fuel system, new fuel pump, strip and line fuel tank, comprehensive tune-up with new plug wires, suspension bushings, tie rods, wheel bearings, brake system overhaul including rebuilt caliper assemblies, wheel cylinders and master cylinder, steering dampener, motor mounts, and subframe mounts, with receipts from the shop that did the work.

At that point, interior, trim, front fenders and doors were removed for sandblasting and a planned driver quality restoration. The sandblasting revealed extensive rust that would have required such a substantial investment in new sheet metal that the project was stopped at that point. There is no windshield with this car, but otherwise complete. The front fenders, hood and trunk are off the car and the interior is out. It needs extensive sheet metal work, paint, interior and remaining assembly.  The chrome and trim is all in good condition, but not show quality. A new OEM rear muffler is included with the car.  While it looks forlorn in primer, with fenders and doors removed, this car is actually in quite good mechanical condition.  With fresh gas, likely another fuel system cleaning and a fresh battery, this car would start and drive.  Receipts for this car total over $6,500 spent to date, excluding the initial acquisition cost of the car, and are included with the sale.

Many of the parts are laid out on tables for inspection by prospective bidders.  Both cars and all parts are together in one hangar, with plenty of circulation room to allow detailed inspection of both cars and the parts.  I strongly encourage pre-bid inspection, to satisfy yourself with the quality of work done to date on the 250 and its associated parts, and the extent of rust on the 220.

Photos start with the 250 and switch to the 220 toward the end.  If you want a close up of something specific, let me know.

I purchased these cars in the 2007-08 time frame with the intent of having them restored as described above.  With a series of long delays, interruptions, and excuses by the restorer(s), and the length of time that has gone by, my interest is now in other projects, and it is time for these to go to the next caretaker.  Reserve is very reasonable and represents an opportunity for an informed buyer to score a tremendous bargain.

Deposit of $2,000 due within 48 hours of auction close, and entire balance due within 7 days of auction close.  Buyer responsible for all costs of packing, loading and shipping.  Thanks for your interest.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid for fat cats frugal with fuel

Thu, 12 Sep 2013

Judging by how long we waited to get a clear shot of the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid, you'd have thought hybrid cars were only driven by Terminators and that the technology arrived only 48 hours ago through a wormhole in the Mercedes stand. The newest member of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class hybrid band - joining the S400 Hybrid and S350 BlueTEC Hybrid, it hits notes like a 5.5-second sprint from standstill to 62 miles per hour, up to 19 miles of ion-powered running and uses three liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in Europe (78.41 mpg US, but our mpg test cycle is different than their mpg test cycle).
The lump up front is a turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6, the lump in back - note the reduction in trunk space - is a pack of lithium-ion batteries that juice an 80-kilowatt electric motor. Other than having four drive options for controlling electric drive and battery usage, it's all S-Class all the time, with leather-covered everything and those mountainous thrones that bring to mind words like "Archduke" and "Papal."
You'll find our hard-earned gallery from the Frankfurt Motor Show floor above, and more words of information in the press release below.

Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG formalize technical partnership

Thu, 19 Dec 2013

The development of a partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin has been a long time coming. The news dates back to 2008, and over the five years since was supposed to lead to a rejuvenation of both the Maybach and Lagonda brands. That program ultimately fell apart, but the tie-in was forged afresh in July when the two automakers signed a letter of intent over a renewed partnership. And now that partnership has been formalized.
In a deal just announced, Mercedes-AMG will build a new V8 engine for Aston Martin that will power a new generation of luxury GTs for the British marque, presumably to replace the 4.7-liter V8 in the Vantage. The relationship appears to be similar to the one already in place between AMG and Pagani, only in this case, will involve Daimler taking as much as a five-percent stake in Aston Martin and an observer seat on Aston's board.
The technical partnership is also set to lead to the supply of electric and electronic systems, and could incorporate "additional areas of cooperation in the future." Whether that will include a fresh attempt at reviving Lagonda remains to be seen, as does the future of Aston's long-serving, Ford-based 6.0-liter V12 engine. But for now you can read the full announcement below.

Consumer Reports selling its road-tested roadsters [w/video]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

Here's a chance to acquire a celebrity-owned vehicles, and this time at a discount instead of a premium. So the celebrity in this case is Consumer Reports, that magazine that could be equally adored and abhored by car enthusiasts. CR buys all of its test vehicles and usually finds willing second owners within its own ranks, but its opening its small used-car lot to the public. On the forecourt are four roadsters: an automatic 2012 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic with 6,600 miles for $36,500, a manual 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i with 8,400 miles for $45,000, a manual 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 for $39,500 and a manual 2013 Porsche Boxster with 7,000 miles for $48,000.
Those numbers mean a savings of $9,000 to $10,000 before haggling - each car is listed with an "Asking price" so there could be some wiggle room if you show up with pockets full of dough and eyes full of serious intent. Since the money CR earns from the sales go back into the magazine's budget to buy more test cars, however, it probably won't take any oddball trades, so you can forget about getting any purchasing help from that track-day AMC Javelin project on blocks in the back yard.
The vehicles have been taken care of and spiffed up for sale; buyers will take delivery at the CR test track in East Haddam, Connecticut and get a tour of the facilities. While you're there they'll even take you on a lap around the track so you can feel how your car handles when driven by one of its testers. They will probably not help you with advice on which toaster and dehumidifier to buy - you'll still need to get a subscription for that. Have a look at the video below to see a day in the life of a CR test car.
