1982 Mercedes-benz 380sl Base Convertible 2-door 3.8l on 2040-cars

Great running, smooth driving, clean old Mercedes convertible ready for bargain priced top down summer fun.

This is an '82 Mercedes 380 SL some friends inherited and didn't need, so it sat from about 2008, when it was last registered, until Thanksgiving of 2013 when I dragged it home.

New things added since then include:

·        German Canvas top

·        Under-Hood Insulation

·        Fuel Pump

·        Fuel Filter

·        Spark Plugs

·        Left Headlight Door

·        Muffler

·        Steering Damper

·        Oil Pressure Sender

·        Fresh Oil Change (full synthetic) and Filter

·        Air Filter

·        Windshield

·        Windshield Wipers

I've also repainted the hood, decklid, and left front fender.  There was some minor body damage to the hood and fender and I eliminated a very 70's looking wing from the decklid, leaving six holes which I welded shut.  The rest of the paint is decent for it's age; certainly presentable.  I found no rust anywhere.

All the instruments work, including the clock.  Heat and AC too, although the latter seems a little anemic.  I'll add somerefrigerant and see if that does the trick.  (car has been converted to R134).  Power windows work fine.  Motor runs strong and quiet; transmission shifts smoothly and kicks down a gear when you press hard on the gas.  No smoke from exhaust.  No ominous sounds or vibrations from motor, transmission or driveline.  Radio works, but I haven't tried the cassette player.  Lights all work fine,  as do brakes.  I haven't been able to get the cruise control to work, but haven't made much of an effort there.

This would be a great "weekend" car, or there's really no reason it couldn't serve as a daily commuter.  I would really like it if a buyer were to come and see it first, but I've bought cars long distance and sold too.  Communication is key.   My favorite feedback was "car is better than described".  I don't think there would be any problem if you were to buy the car and drive it home several hundred miles.

Title is clear CA title.  Per above, it has not been registered or driven since 2008, but registration is "Non Operational" so no back fees owing.   If buyer is from CA, I can work on getting smog inspection done.

Things you should be aware of:

There is no rust I could find, but there was some damage from critters chewing on things under the hood while the car was parked.    Fortunately, this was confined pretty much to the hood insulation, one plug wire and a few smaller wires which I have replaced.

There is a small dent on the right side door, just in front of the door handle.  It's not real noticeable, but I tried to catch it in one of the pictures.  Maybe one of those "paintless dent repair" guys could fix, if it bothers you.

The only other thing I can think of is the clunk when you put it into drive from reverse or reverse from drive is a little more pronounced than I'd like.  Transmission works fine, and I'm told this is common to Mercedes, but I'm trying for no surprises.

I'll try to get a couple of clips up on YouTube so prospective bidders can get a better idea of the way the car runs and drives.

Please feel free to ask questions prior to bidding.  I can take and post more pictures if there is something in particular you'd like to see.

I'm a big fan of Uship for transport, having used them three times with excellent results.  You can go on their site and get an idea of what it would cost to have the car delivered.  I'm happy to work with the shipper of your choice and to make the car available to them at their convenience.

First official shot of Mercedes S-Class Coupe leaks out

Mon, 10 Feb 2014

With the official debut for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe expected tomorrow, it shouldn't be a surprise that some clicky fingers have already managed to uncover an official image of the car before the unveiling. Outside of this sole image, though, there's precious little detail on the new car.
First posted by Autofilou and then picked up by WorldCarFans, the production S-Class Coupe isn't far off from the concept car we saw a few months back in Frankfurt. Like the concept, the leggy production model appears related, albeit distantly, to the S-Class Sedan. The hood and front fascia are longer and lower, befitting of a two-door, while the character lines in the profile are more pronounced. Obviously, the beltline and slim, B-pillarless greenhouse are coupe-only items. We can't see any details on the back of the car, although it does appear that the long hood has a correspondingly short rear deck.
We'll have all the details on the official replacement for the CL-Class when it makes its full debut tomorrow. Until then, what do you think of this lone image? Does it appear that Mercedes has got it right? In terms of design, where would you rank this with the departing CL-Class? Have your say in Comments.

Erebus Motorsport Mercedes E-Class V8 Supercar completes the field [w/videos]

Sat, 23 Feb 2013

Ford, Holden and Nissan introduced their V8 Supercar challengers a while back. Erebus Motorport, whose racing program got the green light not even 120 days ago, has finally shown off the Mercedes-Benz E-Class racer that will complete this year's field of entries. The first AMG race car ever to be built outside of Germany, it's an Australian-built tube-frame chassis specced to the series' Car of Tomorrow rules, fitted with body panels that channel the E63 AMG.
Supported by AMG Customer Motorsport, the 5.0-liter engine is provided by HWA in Germany, the racing arm of AMG. Regulations dictate that it have roughly 650 horsepower, a redline between 7,000 and 7,500 rpm and a torque curve that matches the parity baseline set for all cars.
Lee Holdsworth, Tim Slade and Maro Engel will drive the three team cars, each with different sponsors. Their first showing will be at the Clipsal 500 on March 3 in Adelaide, here in the US we'll get to see them in May at the Circuit of the Americas. Check out the videos below of the Erebus car starting up at its launch, and footage of all of this year's cars doing pre-season testing on track together.

Mercedes-Benz CLA stars in sweeping short with supermodel Karlie Kloss

Wed, 16 Jan 2013

The Mercedes-Benz CLA earned itself a spot on our list of the top five unveils of the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, and for good reason. The German luxury compact is the first small car from the Silver Arrow that looks suitably premium inside and out. Nowness.com has turned out a new video of the CLA featuring super model Karlie Koss in the lead role. We aren't entirely sure what the premise is, but from what we can tell, it looks as if the CLA comes to life and proceeds to be a giant jerk.
After Koss stops to take a closer look at a white horse, the CLA gives the supermodel the old stop-and-go treatment before leaving her on the side of the road. Eventually, the sedan makes nice, but Koss has to ride shotgun instead of taking the controls herself. You can check out the video below to see for yourself.
