This 240D has been a daily driver for me for 3 years. This is a rust free Southern car. A great commuter, fuel conversion candidate or restoration project.
- AC doesn't work- heat is fine. Was converted to 134a according to sticker under the hood.
- Dieseling- Engine runs after key is turned off. I suspect a vacuum system leak. I stall it out to shut off engine when this happens.
- The check engine light has been on since the front brakes were done. I think it may be the brake pad wear sensor.
- The door locks don't all lock with the driver's key from the exterior, or from the interior by depressing the driver's side lock button. this is likely due to a vacuum leak as well. Locks will operate manually.
- The sunroof is not working, though it was when I bought it. I suspect a bad switch.
- Minor dents in driver's rear 1/4 panel and passenger front 1/4 panel. Dents scratches, and nicks as would be expected for an old car.
- Top foam portion of shifter knob broken off. Still works fine. I tried an aftermarket one and it kept coming loose. Needs a Merz knob.
- The antenna is not connected in the trunk, so the radio reception is sometimes fuzzy.
- The driver's side rear window switch is out. The window can be opened from the driver's seat, but not from the back seat.
- Switch for exterior passenger side mirror control is out.
- Clock just stopped working. Speedometer, odometer, gas gauge, temperature gauge work normally.
- There is an occasional short in the low beam/ high beam control arm, where you have to jiggle it to get the lights to shine. It is occasional, and always corrects with a little jiggle, so i haven't looked into fixing it.
- Passenger's front seat has a bad spring so that it is lower on the side closer the door.
- Some upholstery and rubber seals have degraded from age.
- Front door springs are worn. Doors open, close, and latch, but could use some attention.
- One of the heat/ AC vents is loose in it's slot.

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes
Sun, 06 Jan 2013The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.
SRT Viper dukes it out with Mercedes SLS Black Series in new Head 2 Head
Fri, 05 Jul 2013In Episode 36 of Motor Trend's Head 2 Head, now that the Corvette ZR1 is no more, Jonny Lieberman has to look overseas to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series for a challenger with similar philosophy to the SRT Viper: long hood hiding a high-horsepower engine set way back, rear-wheel drive, tiny trunks. That puts the Viper's 8.4-liter V10 with 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque against the SLS AMG's 6.2-liter V8 with 622 hp and 468 lb-ft.
However, the congruences in philosophy and magnitude of numbers doesn't translate to the driving experiences of the two, which are literally and figuratively on different continents. Lieberman gets a handle on the two of them on Northern California roads, Randy Probst then finds out how, and how quickly, they can lap Laguna Seca.
They both get kudos for being improvements on their original sources, but only one of them can take the win. You can find out by watching the video below.
2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series [w/video]
Wed, 13 Mar 2013Now Even Sharper Than The Razor's Edge
There have been five Black Series models since the Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG Black Series introduced itself to European audiences in 2006. Following that, the Black Series club has hosted appearances by the 2008 CLK63 AMG Black Series, the 2009 SL65 AMG Black Series and last year's 2013 C63 AMG Black Series. The sixth member of the group is one we would have thought already was a Black Series car in its standard guise. Right out of the box, the SLS AMG is loud, frenetic, cozy, boisterous and frightfully easy to oversteer. How much more Black did it need to get?
Quite a bit so, apparently. The SLS AMG Black Series has lost weight, gained power and been refitted with upgrades and aero bits from front to rear. If you liked the way it looked before, you'll probably be an even bigger fan of this one. If you thought it looked ungainly, well, this one should stay even further away from pageants. Regardless of where you come down this is the best SLS AMG variant we've driven.
