Mercedes-benz-300-series-300d-1984 Turbo Diesel Svo on 2040-cars

This is a rust free 1984 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel that has been converted to run on straight vegetable oil (SVO). I converted this car about 5 years ago with a second tank for vegetable oil in the trunk that was professionally welded (see pictures). It has a an 18 gallon that has copper pipe with hot coolant from engine for heat. Once it reaches the engine it's heated one more time with a heated filter. The engine has a block heater and the vegetable oil tank has a marine grade pad heater on the bottom for a warm engine and warm vegetable oil on cold mornings. There are two gauges in the car for veggie oil temp and fuel level in veggie tank. The car also comes with a mobile veggie oil purification system made from a 12v gear oil pump one 5 micron filter and a 2 micron filter (not pictured). This car is in good shape for its age with only a few minor issues, the biggest one being the dent in the rear drivers side quarter panel from a hit and run. I have purchased new trim and a new tail light that will come with the car even though the current tail light works perfectly. I purchased the car from California with about 125,000 miles on it. I have only had to put a starter (2009), battery (4/27/12), all new 80,000 mile Michelins at 130k (147k now) 5/6/10 and a brand new spare tire on 7/1/13 (all paperwork is well documented). German Glow plugs were done at 147k. I still have all the original parts (ashtray, spare wheel cover bad trunk carpet) if someone wanted to unconvert the car.  A move to Asia has forced a sale, I have put almost $1700 into the conversion to SVO and quite a few parts from Mercedes Source (a reputable site) over the time I've had it, there are also lots of extras with this car (special tools etc.). I wish it to a good home and don't hesitate asking questions. This car is listed elsewhere and can sell at any time.

Mercedes leads in US luxury car thefts

Wed, 31 Jul 2013

Mercedes-Benz makes some fine automobiles. The Silver Arrow'd cars are so good, apparently, that thieves can't help but try to steal them. The German brand is at the top of the charts for luxury car thefts in the US, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, with New York City leading the way. (And those New Yorkers complain about Detroit being bad!)
The C-Class was the most stolen model, with 485 ganked between 2009 and 2012 in NYC alone, while the E-Class and S-Class (which also boasted the worst recovery rate, at 59 percent) both finished in the top ten. Following the C-Class was the BMW 3 Series and Infiniti G. Not surprisingly, each of these were the most common models in their respective lineups. Los Angeles and Miami are also prime hotspots for luxury car thefts, according to the Detroit News report.
While getting your car stolen is pretty awful, there was one inspiring statistic compiled by the NICB - the average recovery rate across the board was 84 percent, with the Cadillac CTS getting recovered 91 percent of the time.

New Mercedes Unimog debuts to the cheers of little boys everywhere [w/video]

Sat, 27 Apr 2013

The Mercedes Unimog, the superhero villain of the off-road world that's just waiting to make the jump to Transformer, has been completely upgraded for its new generation. There are ten models, expanding the range and getting new designations across the traditional all-terrain series and the implement-carrier series. Panoramic cabins get more visibility, multifunction steering wheels and better dash clusters, improved HVAC and a three-mode central tire inflation system. Outside, there are new items like LED headlights and daytime running lamps in the bumper, roof-mounted windshield wipers and a front-camera monitor for the implement carrier.
The new engine lineup is compliant with Euro VI, featuring four- and six-cylinder BlueEfficiency engines putting out anywhere from 156 horsepower to 354 hp. Powerplant placement has also been tweaked, the chassis members getting a revised curve to place the engine a bit further back and lower, maintaining off-road clearance and lowering the Unimog's center of gravity. The new location of the engine means the cabin has more room, and the wheelbase is shorter. Combined with a higher turning angle, the Unimog has a smaller turning radius than before.
The implement carrier gets what's called a "synergistic traveling drive," the bonus being that drivers don't need to stop in order to use an attachment - a hydrostatic transmission works with the regular manual transmission at up to 31 kilometers per hour for seamless switching.

Test drive the Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive with Chris Harris

Thu, 11 Apr 2013

It's hard to not like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT. The all-aluminum coupe is fitted with a wonderful naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Not only does the burly combustion engine launch the two-seater to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds, but it does so with one of the world's greatest exhaust soundtracks as it roars, burbles and cackles down the road.
But what happens when Mercedes-Benz takes away the V8 and its accompanying fire-burning song? Stripped of one of its most appealing assets, does the SLS lose its soul?
Chris Harris recently had the opportunity to take the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive for a track spin in Europe. Sans gasoline, but with four electric motors providing a combined 740 horsepower (737 pound-feet of torque), all-electric all-wheel drive coupe uses sophisticated torque vectoring and a multi-mode operating system to put oversteer - drifting! - back into the equation. Fun? You bet. See for yourself, below.
