The SLC is a coupe version of the SL roadster. It was essentially the same except for the wheelbase, which was extended by 360 mm to accommodate the two rear seats, and the fixed steel roof with the slightly higher roofline that gave those in rear seat quite reasonable headroom. They were the essential differences. In all other respects the SLC was the same as the SL roadster.Power is delivered by a smooth and powerful fuel-injected 4.5-litre single overhead camshaft V8, which boasts peak power of 147 kW and top torque of 345 Nm.There transmission is a three-speed floorshift auto. It wasn’t as sporty as a manual gearbox would be, but the sporty ’Benz was set-up for the German autobahns where it could comfortably extend its very long legs. The longer wheelbase of the coupe gave it a more comfortable ride than its shorter wheelbase soft-top cousin.Like all Mercedes-Benz models the 450SLC comes with everything you could want in 1979. Air-con came standard, as did power steering, power windows, leather trim, and there is a sunroof.

The 450 SLC cost $29,392 upon release; only 31,739 vehicles were produced.

This car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds with a manual and 9.3 seconds with an automatic. Its maximum speed is 133.5 mph with a manual and 127 mph with an automatic.

Artist imagines eerie world where cars have no wheels

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

The wheel ranks right up there with the telescope and four-slice toaster in the pantheon of inventions that have moved humankind forward. But what if a circle in three dimensions had never occurred to anyone, and we all had just moved on without it? Perhaps we'd be driving around in Lucas Motors Landspeeders with anti-gravity engines. Or maybe we'd have the same cars we do today, just without wheels.
That's the thought experiment that seems to have led French photographer Renaud Marion to create his six-image series called Air Drive. The shots depict cars throughout many eras of motoring that look normal except for one thing: they have no wheels. The models used include a Jaguar XK120, Cadillac DeVille (shown above), Chevrolet El Camino and Camaro, and Mercedes-Benz SL and 300 roadsters.
Perhaps one day when our future becomes our past, you'll be able to walk the street and see with your own eyes the rust and patina of age on our nation's fleet of floating cars. Until then, Monsieur Marion's photographs will have to do.

Maybach could become Mercedes-Benz sub-brand

Wed, 22 Jun 2011

When you're arriving in a twin-turbocharged, twelve-cylinder Maybach limo, there's no reason you should ever have to be late. Except, maybe, to make a fashionable entrance. But up at the corporate level, the entire Maybach brand is being slowed down as critical decisions about its future are being undertaken.
Last week, we reported that a decision on what path Maybach would take going forward would be due at the start of next month, but the latest reports indicate that the timeframe has been extended as further options are being considered.
The previous options under consideration were twofold: either relaunch the brand with production outsourced to Aston Martin - which suddenly finds itself with excess production capacity - or shut it down completely. And those are still two very real options. Word has it that Aston has put together four concept cars for the Daimler brass to consider, all based on the next-generation S-Class platform (and thankfully not the old one).

Mercedes dealers authorized to spend $2,500 on perks for S-Class customers

Mon, 02 Dec 2013

If you drop $100,000 on a luxury sedan, it seems only reasonable to receive some preferential treatment at the dealership you purchased from. After all, that price isn't just for the car - you're paying for the brand and all the cachet that entails. For Mercedes-Benz, those benefits have apparently been lacking relative to the German brand's luxury competitors.
That's set to change, though, as Automotive News reports that the German brand is placing a much greater emphasis on keeping its customers happy and loyal with its MB Select program. Starting with the new S-Class and spreading to the CLA-Class (and eventually beyond), dealers are being given money - up to $2,500 in the case of the flagship sedan - just to improve the customer experience.
We agree, improving the "customer experience" is quite a vague term, so it's nice that Mercedes USA's CEO, Steve Cannon, offered up some examples to AN at the LA Auto Show. For example, a customer couldn't fit his sunglasses into the overhead compartment. "So we bought him a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses that fit because of their shape," Cannon said.
