The car has been wonderful as a daily until needed something different for a sales job. The past year to year and a half, the car has not been driven much. It needs TLC as developed some issues over the past 5+ years. I am not a mechanic plus do not have time to put into repairing or restoring it. This car has a very strong motor and might be great as a parts car if it is not restored.

The motor has 156,209 miles and runs strong. It needs a little exercise plus need to run out some stale gas. I recently added fuel additive plus preserver to tank. I will record and attach a new video that shows how easy it starts and drives down the road. The engine has dripped a small amount of oil ever since I got it. I call it my automatic oil change. I just add oil every month or two.

The transmission was bad when I bought the car about 8 years ago. I drove it back from California without trouble and for a year or two before I spent $3,235 on a new transmission 9/30/2004. That transmission had troubles so I bought a rebuilt one and had it installed on 8/08/2008 for $3,536. Although it drives good now, I recommend a transmission tune up or adjustment as there is a delay on getting going sometimes and feels like it sometimes slips. It may just need more fluid or an adjustment.

The power steering pump and starter have been replaced within the past 3 years. An extensive brake job with new rotors was done about 5 years ago. I can't remember the last time the car had a tune-up so could use some maintenance.

The car was primer paint when I bought it. I had $4000 paint job in original color about 8 years ago. There is an area on the passenger side roof where paint is peeling. A tree limb fell and the thinner limbs put a few dings into the car mostly on the passenger side. A vandal rammed a shopping cart into the passenger side door. The car has not been wrecked while I owned it. I just noticed the bottom real trim piece has dropped down and needs to be firmly attached. The sun roof acted up because of electrical problem and would not fully close. I applied tape on the roof which sun baked on. I later pulled most of it off and used silicone caulk to keep leaks out. The photos were taken with the past two weeks except for the 3 with the date on them so you can see the damage.

The electrical needs work. The battery drains and a fuse for sunroof and heated seats blows immediately. I rigged the headlights with a toggle switch and have it used it that way for 3-4 years. The AC and heat do not work. The AC worked several years ago and don't know what is wrong with it. The wipers work, all electric windows work, the headlights and tail lights work, electric seats move, newer stereo and amp work however you need to add a radio antenna. You can get buy with a cheap standard one or put in an electric telescoping model. The electric door locks do not work but the key locks the doors so not a big issue with me.

I recommend new wheels. A shop broke one of my wheels and then replaced it with one off ebay which does not fit without a spacer. It looks like there could be some play where the lugs go which give a vibration around 40mph. There is also tire wear on the front driver's tire which may be front end alignment or other problem. The car has a vibration around 40-50 that disappears at higher speed.

The interior needs work. The seats have cracks in the leather plus the headliner and trim are not perfect. Old spray glue has dripped and stained seats and trim. The dashboard also has cracks. I would replace carpet, recover seats, and new headliner and trim pieces if restoring the car. The trunk gasket is cracked and needs to be changed because leaks into trunk when it rains. The gloss coating on the wood is cracked on the gear shift knob and some of the wood trim.

I bought the car in June of 2005 and could not get it to pass emissions test. I drove it anyway and put nearly 50,000 miles on the car. Since I never officially registered it and titled it in my name, I will include the original title with my correct info on the back plus an Affidavit of Correction form and Affidavit of Non-Dealer Transfers of Motor Vehicles and Boats form. If you use the car for parts then you don't need to worry about putting the title in your name. I will give you all the completed paperwork to do it just in case.

Overall, this car would provide reliable transportation with a little work. My German friend who relocated here from Germany said that the 5.6L motor in this car is the best that Mercedes ever made and is expected to surpass 500,000 miles. Come back and check out this listing early next week as I will add new photos and videos that give a walk around and a virtual test drive.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept crossover leaked ahead of Shanghai debut

Wed, 17 Apr 2013

With just a few days left before the start of the Shanghai Motor Show, images of the Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept compact crossover have emerged online. The little 'ute is based on the small A-Class hatchback, and though it shares an identical wheelbase, is larger in every other dimension.
Looking like a rough-and-tumble five-door hatchback on the tippy toes of its 20-inch wheels, the GLA is most certainly destined for production in a toned down form that will borrow many bits and pieces from other cars based on this platform like the aforementioned A-Class and the CLA-Class sedan. Carscoop reports that the production version of the GLA will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September of this year, with sales to the public starting in 2014.
Since it's based on the A-Class, we expect that the production GLA-Class will be powered by your choice of Mercedes' 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine and a diesel or two, and will offer transmissions that include the company's seven-speed DCT and perhaps a six-speed manual (at least in Europe). If the GLA follows the same path as the two cars before it, expect a GLA45 AMG producing over 300 horsepower, as well. As for what powers the GLA Concept, that just might remain a mystery until the vehicle is officially revealed in China.

Is Audi getting complacent and suffering from brain drain?

Wed, 27 Nov 2013

The argument is made in a Reuters article: Audi is falling behind other luxury brands, such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, due to a lack of research-and-development spending and "brain drain," or the migration of top executives and R&D chiefs to other parts of the Volkswagen Group. Reuters notes that Audi's current R&D chief is the third in 16 months.
Audi, which contributed to 40 percent of VW Group's $11.6 billion in profit the first nine months of the year, is delivering cars at a record pace: 1.31 million were delivered from January to October 2013 versus BMW's 1.35 million. Yet Audi, Reuters reports, doesn't have a halo car akin to BMW's new electrified i3 and i8 or an answer to Mercedes' plug-in-hybrid S-Class, and the R&D spending at Audi is less than BMW and Mercedes by a fair margin. It's noted in the article, however, that Audi benefits from other R&D spending within VW Group.
Reuters mentions that BMW "trumpets its new 'i' series" and the new Mercedes CLA and GLA ranges are winning "rave reviews" as part of its argument that Audi's recent lack of technological innovation could hurt future sales. Those cars do pack tons of new technology, some of which are firsts for mainstream production cars. But last time we checked, the i3 could be causing BMW's stock to slide, the CLA isn't receiving the rave reviews that Reuters would have you believe and the GLA hasn't been reviewed yet.

New Die Hard movie wrecked 132 cars in $11 million chase scene [w/video]

Sat, 16 Feb 2013

It would seem the act of dying hard brings with it lots of wanton destruction of the four-wheeled kind. According to John Moore, director of A Good Day To Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis, There were 132 (cars) that could never be used again. Another 518 required a lot of work. And damn right there were some good cars there... That's the fun of it."
Please join us in one great big collective sigh. Done? Okay, let's continue.
"With Die Hard it's about how audacious the action is," says Moore. "So you have to drive over a Lamborghini. An actual one. And yes it hurts me. I'm a car fanatic." Yeah. Sounds like it hurt really bad... though not as bad as the final tally after all the carnage had been counted: "Someone showed me the numbers on the car chase and soup to nuts, you put it all together it was like an $11 million sequence."
