This 1982 Mercedes has low miles and is in absolutely original condition. It has a clean, clear title with no damage history and no bondo.  The VIN is WDB12603712016984.  The all orignal un-retouched paint is a result of having always been garaged indoors and rarely if ever driven in the rain.  In January I became the third owner when the car was bequeathed to my wife and me by an elderly woman with whom we had been friends for decades. Prior to making the gift she explained to us that the car had originally been brought to the United States in 1982 by a social acquaintance of hers who was then an official at the German Embassy in Los Angeles. She said she then bought the car from him in 1984 and owned it from 1984 to January of this year when I drove it here to Washington state from Arizona and transferred the title into my name.  For the past eight years she had not been allowed to drive, so during that time she stored the car in a heated garage.  She kept the license plates and insurance current until the end of last year so that her son could come over two or three times a year to briefly drive the car around.

As seen from the pictures, the body, the brightwork, the interior, the seats, the lights and the glass are all more nearly perfect than would even be expected after 31 years and over 130,000 miles. I am not in a position to warrant the stated mileage, but to me the condition of the car is consistent with far less miles than those shown. There is no rust and there are no rock chips anywhere. The tires are quite serviceable - quality steel belted radials with about half their remaining tread life. They're mounted on unblemished factory original chrome Mercedes wheels. What appears to be the original Dunlop spare tire is still in the trunk, apparently never having touched the ground. This Mercedes is funtionally complete as a turnkey collector car, and is not a restoration.  The original Mercedes Owner's manuals are in the glove compartment, and the original Mercedes first aid kit and camera kit that came with the car are still in the compartments designed for them located in the bench behind the rear seat.  Sadly, the little camera from the kit is missing. The upholstery could be described as near perfect except for one small abrasion where the driver's seat belt has rubbed. The seats are in this remarkable condition because they had been covered since 1984 by custom made sheepskin covers which I removed and intended to discard. However, I decided to keep them in case the new owner wants them with the car.

Are there defects?  Of course, and I've noticed several things, nothing major.  The dash lights don't work and the switch is quite obviously bad.The odometer and trip odometer, but not the speedometer, quit working while I was attempting to check fuel mileage coming here from Arizona. The car did not use oil on the trip and I haven't changed it as it appears clean and good. The dirver's side seat belt retractor is weak and doesn't retract all the way. The windshield washer and headlight washers do not seem to work although the reservoir is full.

The car is available for inspection by appointment. During the bidding, I will drive a prospective purchaser or agent to the car for inspection from the Bellingham, Washington airport, and will make the same arrangement with a buyer after the sale. Or, upon the buyer's request, after the sale I will deliver the car anywhere on Interstate 5 from Canada to Mexico for actual expenses incurred so long as the buyer is willing to wait up to 30 days for such delivery.

Reserve? Yes there is.  But, just high enough to weed out the Looky Lus and all those nice Low-Ball folks.

Mercedes rules out hybrid supercar, promises SLS successor

Sat, 16 Mar 2013

The recent Geneva Motor Show was a festival of hypercars, with the presence of not one, but three over-the-top debuts: the Lamborghini Veneno, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LeFerrari. The latter two have hitched their carbon fiber bumpers to the electrification bandwagon by using hybrid-electric powertrains not entirely unlike the propulsion systems we've come to know in cars like the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. Does that mean the flow of electrons up the four-wheeled food chain will eventually consume our hallowed supercars? Not if AMG has anything to say about it.
AMG Director of Vehicle Development Tobias Moers recently confirmed that not only will there be a successor to the Mercedes-Benz performance division's SLS AMG, he notes that its internal combustion engine will most definitely not be sharing living quarters with an electric drivetrain. Instead, AMG plans to focus on further pushing the power and efficiency envelope of the internal combustion engine and advancing the use of lightweight materials to achieve their goals. The first example of this effort can be seen in the new SLS AMG Black Series that incorporates many weight-saving techniques to shed some 154 pounds from the SLS AMG GT (above), which itself is lighter than the standard SLS AMG.
Furthermore, Moers remarks that his company is happy to leave the hypercar segment to companies like Ferrari and McLaren. He admits that, "Ferrari in the hyper-car segment is still a different brand than AMG. We have to be honest..." So rather than taking the SLS further upmarket to do battle with bulls and stallions, Moers hinted that the next-generation SLS may be joined by another performance model that fits neatly between itself and the C63 AMG.

European automakers gear up for Brazilian production

Mon, 07 Oct 2013

Brazil is the place to be, apparently. Toyota has been investing in the South American country, as has BMW, which announced a $261 million investment in October 2012, on the heels of an Audi factory announcement in San José Chiapa. The high-end immigration is only set to continue, as Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar-Land Rover have both announced plans to set up manufacturing operations there.
Mercedes is the big news here, as its new facility will see the German manufacturer invest 170-million euros for production of its next-generation C-Class and upcoming GLA-Class. "Brazil is an important future market. With our local production we accept the challenge and take on the competition," noted Andreas Renschler, Management Board member for Production and Procurement at Mercedes-Benz Cars and Mercedes-Benz Vans. Production is expected to begin by 2016.
Jaguar-Land Rover, meanwhile, isn't so concrete in its plans. The news of its investment in South America comes from a job posting for a plant quality manager in Brazil that was picked up by the UK's AutoCar. "Portuguese language skills will be definite advantage" for interested candidates, according to the job listing. The want ad follows on the heels of remarks by Jaguar Land Rover's Dr. Ralph Speth, who said there are "very intensive discussions" with Brazil's government. Unlike Mercedes, there's no mention of which vehicles will be produced in South America, although AutoCar thinks the Freelander, sold in the US as the LR2, is a leading contender.

Aston Martin and Daimler continue talks on SUV project, CEO required

Tue, 01 Apr 2014

The Aston Martin Lagonda SUV concept revealed at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show didn't earn the plaudits the company is used to when it reveals new models, and it has lived an uncertain life ever since. Thought to have been scrapped along with the entire revival of the Lagonda brand, then thought to have been resurrected due to Chinese, Middle Eastern and Russian demand, another year passed before we heard more definitive talk about an Aston Martin expansion when AutoCar reported that the Lagonda could be built on one of Mercedes-Benz's AMG SUV platforms.
A report in Automotive News Europe indicates plans have gotten serious, its unnamed sources saying that the English carmaker is talking to Daimler "to extend their cooperation to building an SUV." Neither Daimler, Aston Martin nor Investindustrial, the managing partner among Aston Martin's ownership consortium, would comment. But with Investindustrial having pledged to expand the range, competitors like Bentley, Maserati and Lamborghini getting into the SUV racket and clear demand from current and future customers, it's easy to believe Aston Martin is working hard to put the pieces together.
One further potential bump on the road to an Aston SUV is the company's search for a new CEO. Ulrich Bez relinquished to top spot at the company at the end of 2013, and Aston reportedly will not finalize its model strategy without a new CEO in place.
