This 1995 E300D is a Mercedes classic with legendary style and bulletproof reliability. 1995 was the last year of the nine-year run for the W124 chassis in the U.S. market, making this vehicle the high-water mark for the refinement of the line. For many Mercedes diesel enthusiasts, this particular model, along with the W124s that preceded it, represent the perfect balance between the reliability of the old and refinement of the new.

CONDITION/PERFORMANCE

The vehicle is performing to high standards. Steering, handling, acceleration, braking, shifting, etc. are all performing well. It's really a joy to drive!

The 606 engine is really very impressive. Plenty of power. . .great around town, but it really excels on the open road. Both the 606 engine and the 722 transmission have proved to be extremely reliable over the years (as I suspect you already know if you're reading this ad). I know of one individual with this car with over 400,000 miles and counting on the original transmission! Recent transmission fluid and filter service confirms that the transmission is in good condition. And while it's impossible to be certain, it's likely that many of the miles are highway miles.

Tires are in excellent condition with lots of tread remaining; rear tires are BRAND NEW.

The exterior is in overall decent condition, though there are imperfections upon close inspection. Visual impact from 10-15 feet is quite good. I think the pics give an accurate representation.

The frame and the body are rust free with the exception of the beginnings of rust at the rear jack points (not visible with caps on, but this should probably be addressed at some point). And there are two small holes in the rear wheel wells that have been patched and had undercoat sprayed on.

The front suspension was recently carefully inspected by my mechanic. He noted that it's been well attended to, with many parts replaced. The only item to be addressed is the right lower ball joint. While there is no movement, there is mild intermittent squeaking. It should probably be replaced in the not-too-distant future.

The interior (seats, dash, trim, etc.) is in very nice condition. The one exception is the front part of the arm rest, which is worn away.

Automatic climate control works reasonably well. Heat is piping hot, variable fan speed works as designed, the blower motor does not squeak, and the AC is ice cold. However, there is a leak in the system (not diagnosed as of yet), so periodic recharging is required. Also, the air flow at the vents does not seem to be as strong as it should be, even after replacing the cabin filters.

There is one glow plug that is not working, but the car starts without any difficulty. There is a block heater, but I doubt that it would ever be needed (some like to warm the block on cold mornings. . .I've never bothered).

The original Becker audio system works great. And there is a CD changer mounted in the trunk. A cassette adapter works well for iPod, smart phone, etc...

MAINTENANCE

Recent maintenance includes:

Oil and filter (Mobil Delvac 1300 15w40)
Transmission fluid and filter
Coolant (Zerex G-05 and distilled water)
Air filter
Power steering fluid and filter
Fuel filters
New rear tires
AC Recharge
Four-wheel alignment
Cleaned intake manifold
New catalytic converter (Magnaflow)
Replaced leaking resonator pipe with straight pipe
New expansion tank cap
New antenna seal
New throttle guide
New cabin filters
New hood star (really, what's the point of owning a Benz without a hood star?)

Registered in RI, safety inspection valid through May 2015.

NON-FUNCTIONAL ITEMS

The following items are not functioning as they should: (1) Left Rear Window (needs a new regulator. . .the motor works); (2) Sunroof; (3) Exterior Temperature Gauge. (4) Auxiliary Fans. The auxiliary fans are certainly not needed when the AC is not running or when running the AC on the highway. Even in stop and go traffic with the AC on, the temperature gauge says well within safe levels. But, on a very hot day climbing a steep grade with the AC on you would probably need the fans. Under most driving conditions, you can safely live without them. New fans can be purchased for as little as $68 each; there are two of them.

REASON FOR SELLING

So why am I selling the car? What I like to do, in addition to the 91 300D and the 92 300D that I own, is to acquire and get acquainted with different Mercedes diesels now and again. I had always wanted to own a 95 E300D but never had the opportunity, so this became my latest "additional" car. I've enjoyed learning about it and working on it, and especially DRIVING it, but now it's time to pass it on to a more permanent owner so that I can search for my next car. I have no particular need to sell the car and am very glad to enjoy it until it does sell.

CONCLUSION

The bottom line: this is a classic W124 diesel sedan, undoubtedly one of the best cars Mercedes ever made, in good condition for a fair reserve price. (FYI NADA is $4555, Kelly Blue Book is $4665).

I have attempted to provide a reasonably full description of the car, partly because I want prospective buyers to be as informed as possible, and partly because I despise Craigslist ads with no information. Feel free to call, text, or email with any questions. I will answer promptly and to the best of my ability.

Paul di Resta returns to DTM with Mercedes

Tue, 21 Jan 2014

Some drivers manage to make the transition from one form of motor racing into another, and some run into trouble. Take Paul di Resta, for example. The promising young Scottish driver dominated Formula 3 racing in Europe in 2006, then moved over to Germany's hugely competitive DTM touring car series where he finished second in 2008, third in 2009 and first in 2010. But things didn't go as smoothly for Paul - cousin to retired Indy champion Dario Franchitti - when he moved in to Formula One with the Force India team.
In three years on the grid, he failed to score a single podium finish. Little surprise, then, that Force India opted not to renew his contract for this season. Left without a ride, di Resta is now going back to DTM with longtime supporter Mercedes-Benz, testing the new C-Class touring car today in Portugal. It's good news for Mercedes, which is celebrating 120 years in motor racing this season and, with 2005 champion Gary Paffett also on board, can now count two former champions on its DTM roster.
We wouldn't count Paul out of F1 for good, though. When he won the DTM title four years ago, he was also moonlighting as Force India's test driver, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him pull similar double-duty with the Mercedes F1 team (or another Benz-powered outfit) this year before spring-boarding back into grand prix racing in the future. At 27 years old, he may not have been the youngest driver on the grid this year, but he's still got a good few years ahead of him.

Test drive the Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive with Chris Harris

Thu, 11 Apr 2013

It's hard to not like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT. The all-aluminum coupe is fitted with a wonderful naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Not only does the burly combustion engine launch the two-seater to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds, but it does so with one of the world's greatest exhaust soundtracks as it roars, burbles and cackles down the road.
But what happens when Mercedes-Benz takes away the V8 and its accompanying fire-burning song? Stripped of one of its most appealing assets, does the SLS lose its soul?
Chris Harris recently had the opportunity to take the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive for a track spin in Europe. Sans gasoline, but with four electric motors providing a combined 740 horsepower (737 pound-feet of torque), all-electric all-wheel drive coupe uses sophisticated torque vectoring and a multi-mode operating system to put oversteer - drifting! - back into the equation. Fun? You bet. See for yourself, below.

2014 Mercedes SL and SLK add small expansion to Takata airbag recall

Fri, 11 Jul 2014

Mercedes-Benz is the latest automaker to be affected by Takata's massive airbag recall. The company has announced a voluntary recall campaign on a small number of model-year 2014 SLK- and SL-Class roadsters.
In Mercedes' case, 300 vehicles are affected, 200 of which are in the hands of customers. According to spokesperson Donna Boland, the affected roadsters were built between March and April of this year.
The issue, which is apparently the fault of one of Takata's subcontractors, rests with some improperly installed fasteners, which could keep the airbag from performing the way it's supposed to. According to Boland, Mercedes isn't sure what, if any, injuries the recalled airbags could cause, but simply claims there's an increased risk in these particular vehicles. There's been no reported instances of the faulty airbags deploying on a customer and the original issue was found in a production test.
