Up for auction is my beautiful and beloved 2005 E55 Mercedes. I've decided to move on to something a bit newer sporting a tailgate (SUV). I spent nearly six months searching for this, my ideal W211 E55. It was the perfect combination. It is widely accepted that of the Kompressor-era W211's (built: 2003-2006), those produced in the latter half of that period are growing increasingly desirable, primarily since by this point the mid-production mechanical revisions & cosmetic updates had already been made, improving the vehicle's reliability with vital changes made to the cooling system, and its appeal with the interior updates like the "200mph" speedo and sliding-tray center console/cup holder (found on the newer E63). This particular one, is classic Mercedes triple black, that's Jet Black Exterior (color code: 040) and Black Leather Upholstery w/ Black Birdseye Trim. She's also a lightweight with with just 3 factory "must-have" options (Self-Leveling/Active CurvAssist HID Lighting package, GPS Navigation w/ Harmon/Kardon Logic7 Premium Sound System + iPod Connectivity, and AMG Rear Spoiler). The trade-off in gadgets was intentional as the added weight (esp. w/ the Panoramic Roof) and repair costs associated with more heavily-optioned examples are not worth the headache. When you consider the failure rates of the Pano Roof motors (not to mention the annoying leaks & creaks that come with it), the Keyless-Go door sensors, Park-Tronic rear bumper sensors and we can't forget those "active bolsters" on the Dynamic Seating package. With weight reduction still in mind, this car is also equipped with a front & rear Brembo GT Big Brake Kit (among other extras - see below!) with its 2-piece rotor design at all four corners. Honestly, this E55 is a purebred: tastefully modified, ultra clean, well-documented, southern-owned and properly maintained.  If you're in the market for an AMG, you may have found "the one"!

FACTORY OPTIONS:

-HID Lighting Package w/ Active CurvAssist

-GPS Navigation w/ Harmon-Kardon Logic7 Premium  Sound

-AMG Rear Trunk Spoiler

PREMIUM EXTRAS INCLUDED:

-BREMBO GT BIG BRAKE KIT

($7500 extra that includes 380MM FRONT / 345MM REAR lightweight 2-piece rotors w/ 8-piston FRONT calipers and 4-piston REARs, all finished in classic Brembo Red for an aggressive, but appropriately classy appearance and superior stopping power over the AMG standard)

-RENNTECH RIDE CONTROL MODULE

($700 extra that offers in-car on-the-fly ride height monitoring and adjustability that works seamlessly with Mercedes' AirMatic suspension - this is the ticket if you like to attend shows or attend auto-x events, the ability to lower the ride height improves not only the look of the car, but it's handling characteristics)

-OEM M-B E63 FRONT “FACELIFT”

($2000 extra that was dealer-installed at the request of the previous owner; includes the more aggressive W211 E63 front bumper, fog lights and grill - all of course are genuine OEM Mercedes-Benz parts)

-OEM MERCEDES-BENZ 19” 5-SPOKE CLS AMG WHEELS WRAPPED IN LIKE-NEW CONTINENTAL EXTREME-CONTACT PERFORMANCE TIRES

($1500 in wheels and $1300 in tires)

-MP DESIGN RACE-INSPIRED STEERING WHEEL

(another $750 extra that looks/feels more like an AMG wheel should and still retains 100% functionality of the steering wheel controls)

-OEM M-B IPOD INTEGRATION

($350 dealer-installed extra - device plug located in glovebox)

-50% HUPER OPTIK HEAT-RESISTANT WINDOW FILM APPLIED TO ALL GLASS IN VEHICLE

($450 tint job that comes with a transferrable lifetime warranty - this type of tint is the best money can buy and the lightness of the tint plays well with the blue sport glass Mercedes is known for offering during this era of production; I get more compliments on the tint than anything else)

-OEM M-B AMG FLUSH-MOUNT ‘AFFALTERBACH’ HOOD BADGE

(for a more aggressive and updated look - the car will come with it's original Standing Star should the new owner wish to swap it out in the future)

ABOUT THE CAR:

It was officially built on a Friday (11th) in February 2005 and delivered to her first owner on a Tuesday (13th) in December of the same year and only driven 10,160 miles around  Florida during a one-year lease. Shortly after the car was turned-in, it was resold as a Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned vehicle to a corporate attorney & car enthusiast in Kennesaw, Georgia. The 2nd owner continued to care for the car over the next five years and drove it nearly 95K miles (primarily in commutes in and around Atlanta). I purchased the car with 106,724 miles on the odometer and I've managed to put another 10K miles on it in just under one year's time. I simply enjoy driving the car, best described as an interstate "cruise missile" of sorts, which of course makes it ideal for long-hauls. Over a 4-day weekend just this past summer, I drove it over a thousand miles from my home in Augusta, GA to a BMW/Mercedes/Exotic car show/gathering located in Columbus, Ohio and as expected, the car never skipped a beat.

With regards to condition, the car is basically being sold as-new, with only a few minor flaws, some of which are typical of a car this age and mileage. Looking at the photos, you can easily tell this is one beautiful machine! The Jet Black paint is a mile deep and stunning. It was recently polished with a single-stage correction by one of the top auto detailers in the country earlier this summer and it still looks great 5 months later. As expected with a car that spent much of it's running life on the highway, rock chips are evident but they're primarily contained on the hood (note: front bumper is new). I know the car was garaged by the previous owner and I treat it will the same respect as it rarely if ever sleeps outdoors. The black pearl window trim, glass and paint are all free of water spots or oxidation typically found on cars less fortunate w/o a garage. It's important to note that while some light modifications have been made to the vehicle, the entire drivetrain and ECU are 100% factory original and unmodified, so the vehicle performs as AMG intended with improvements in cosmetics, convenience and safety alone (see "premium extras" listed above). Being that this E55 has spent its entire life in the South, you can expect the underside of the car is as clean as the topside; there are absolutely no leaks or rust to speak of. The interior's condition of course is no exception. Aside from a missing driver-side sun visor which I actually purchased the car w/o, the interior still shows & smells as-new; the photos speak for themselves. This AMG is a BEAST, she's mechanically sound and pulls like a locomotive! All power options/interfaces function flawlessly. With a couple grand spent on some light tuning (ECU re-flash and aftermarket S/C pulley), you could even pull another 50hp out of this car, but I decided to leave that option up to the next owner. I preferred to keep it primarily stock to try and uphold the car's reliability.

The car's documented service history is below and is, in writing, verbatim what has been replaced/repaired during a good portion of its life. Its important to review the service history when purchasing any vehicle, especially a higher mileage example; It gives you a sense of security knowing what issues (both common and other) were addressed and if/how often  regular service intervals were completed "on-time". The hard copies of this information will be included in the sale of the vehicle (and yes, it's highly organized). Please understand the information listed below is merely the extent of what I can physically prove was done to the car. With regard to the obvious gaps in it's "surviving" documented history as it is outlined below, I have reason to believe the previous owner honestly misplaced the documents in process of moving offices. It's possible additional service 'notes' could show on an AutoCheck or CARFAX, if you wish to inquire further.

Volvo S60 Polestar concept plays in the snow with Mercedes C63 AMG

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

Chris Harris took to a snowy stretch of tarmac to get a fingertips-on-the-wheel feel of the Volvo S60 Polestar concept. Harris says the turbocharged sedan with 508 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque - and a manual transmission - is "a study to see if Volvo can get back into the fast-car market." The Polestar S60 concept, one of which was already purchased for $300,000 by a private buyer, is still making the publicity rounds because even Volvo's Chinese owners realize that, as Harris says, "Volvo sold more cars because it made fast cars" like the old 850 T5 Wagon that stormed the British Touring Car Championship in the 1990s.
For reference, Harris compares the blue wonder to the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and its 487 hp and 442 lb-ft. The question is, were Volvo to get the price of a production version of the S60 Polestar to climb way down from its 200,000-pound sticker, could it be worthy competition to the established giants?
You can watch Harris divine the answer via a lot of drifting through the snow and a drag race in the video below.

Race Recap: 2013 Japanese Grand Prix flips several scripts [spoilers]

Mon, 14 Oct 2013

Japan's Suzuka circuit is a great track that all the drivers love, but it doesn't usually provide the most thrilling, head-to-head racing. Where it does excel, however, is with surprises and "What just happened there?!" moments, and this year it was no different.
It started with Mark Webber in his Infiniti Red Bull Racing out-qualifying his teammate Sebastian Vettel for the first time this year. They were followed closely by Lewis Hamilton in the first Mercedes-AMG Petronas, the still-solid Romain Grosjean again outdoing teammate Kimi Räikkönen, Felipe Massa racing for another seat in Formula One and putting his Ferrari in fifth, then Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes, Nico Hülkenberg in the first Sauber, Fernando Alonso in the second Ferrari, and Räikkönen continuing to do himself no favors by qualifying tenth.
For the second year in a row, the lights going out was the cue to start the first corner action...

YouTube's Super Bowl commercial buzz list dominated by automakers [w/videos]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

After Sunday's big game, YouTube will be the place to watch every commercial that you missed when you left your seat for an emergency guac refill or, as we say in Cleveland, took the Browns to the Super Bowl. That makes YouTube the nation's water cooler on Monday, and it's got some preliminary stats to share in the lead up to kickoff.
As you know, Super Bowl advertisers, particularly automakers, like to endlessly tease their big budget commercials in the weeks before the game, many times revealing them outright days in advance. Because of this, YouTube can tell us which commercials have been viewed the most so far, and their top five list is all automakers.
Kaley Cuoco appears to have been a good investment for Toyota, as her ad for the RAV4 has garnered the most YouTube views - six million and counting - among Super Bowl commercials so far. Second place goes to Mercedes-Benz, though not its actual Super Bowl commercial, but rather the teaser for it. You know, the one with Kate Upton and the car washing, which is up to 5.6 million views. Third place is Audi's Prom commercial (3.3M views), fourth goes to Volkswagen's slightly controversial Get In, Get Happy ad (3.3M views), and the fifth and final spot is bookended by the teaser video for Kaley Cuoco's commercial (3.2M views). You can watch all five in order below.
