***NO RESERVE AUCTION*****Up for auction is this beautiful 1974 Mercedes Benz 450 SEL. The 450sel was the flagship of the Mercedes Benz line in 1974 and 1974 was the only year the 450 SEL was named car of the year. Looking at this very well preserved example, it is easy to see why. For a large, heavy car, this car drives beautifully. Even at almost 40 years old, it is quick, responsive, and surprisingly agile as it shows no problem holding it's own amongst contemporary cars. This car still feels very solid with doors that close like a bank vault and not the slightest rattle or creak as it goes over railroad tracks. This example is finished in MBZ factory color 'dark red' and has had only one re-paint since new. It shows extremely well. The body is laser straight. The chrome is likewise in very nice condition. The car has been fitted with true knock off wire wheels, which means that in order to secure the wheels to the car, a special lead topped hammer (stored in the trunk) must be used to hammer the spinners on or off to remove the wheels. And there are 5 of these wire beauties! They are also in superior condition showing none of the usual rust that accumulates on the higher mileage cars. The dark red exterior is complimented very nicely by the Cognac interior which feature the original leather seating. Overall, the leather has held up well to be almost 40 years old. There are, of course, a few flaws to be reported most notably where the sun has produced a few small tears at the top of the back seat adjacent to the rear package shelf and creasing and some cracking are also on the drivers seat, which shows the most wear, predictably. But the leather is still very supple and has that wonderful old Mercedes smell each time you enter the car. I did cannibalize another 450SEL witht he same color interior and bought a pair of front seat cushions. The passenger one has already been installed but not the drivers side. Hence, the car will come with the extra seat cushion ready to install on the drivers side. Headliner is almost perfect and so are door panels. Aftermarket mats protect the original carpet well. Almost everything works instrumentation wise. All gauges and even the clock, although it needs frequent re-sets to keep accurate time. Working A/C! This car has the optional electric sliding sunroof and it glides open and closed with one touch of the button. The original Becker radio was apparently removed and replaced with a Blaupunkt cassette model that was featured equipment on the Porsche and Ferarri models of the day. It works well, including cassette! Everything works as it should with the exception of the cruise control, which may work fine, I just have not tested it. Original blue and gold California plate car and there is no rust on this car. Orignal key and books present, this low mile (78.400+/-) beauty needs nothing other than to be enjoyed. It is regrettably being offered for sale.
Please ask any and all questions prior to bidding. All sales are final and sold as is, where is.

The true knock off wire wheels on this car, all 5 of them, are stamped "Zenith Wire Wheel company" "Campbell,California."

Why all of this year's F1 noses are so ugly [w/video]

Fri, 31 Jan 2014

If you're a serious fan of Formula One, you already know all about The Great Nosecone Conundrum of 2014. Those given to parsing each year's F1 regulations predicted the strong possibility of the so-called "anteater" noses as far back as early December 2013. Highly suggestive visual evidence first came after Caterham's crash test in early January, with further proof coming as soon as Williams showed a rendering of the FW36 challenger for this year's championship. That car earned a name that wasn't nearly so kind as "anteater."
Casual followers of the sport - or anyone who gets the feed from this site - probably don't know what's happening, except to wonder why the current year's F1 cars are led by appendages that would make Cyrano de Bergerac feel a whole lot better about himself.
The short answer to the question of ugsome F1 noses is "FIA regulations and safety." The reason there are various kinds of ugsome noses is simpler: engineers. The same boffins who have given us advances including carbon fiber monocoques, six-wheeled cars, double diffusers and Drag Reduction Systems are bred to do everything in their power to exploit every possible freedom in the regulations to make the cars they're building go faster - the caveat being that those advances have to work within the overall philosophy of the whole car.

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.

Dartz promises own 6x6 G-Class with golden shishas and a dining room

Mon, 25 Mar 2013

So you didn't really think Dartz Motorz was going to let the limited-production, 544-horsepower Mercedes 6x6 G63 AMG go without a challenge, did you? Picking up the gauntlet as only Dartz can, the Russian dream-makers have come up with the Sahara G-eopard, supposedly a special request from a buyer to make one of the 'standard' six-wheelers "more opulent and insane."
That means the vehicle from the factory gets extended by about a foot (30 centimeters), coach doors in the rear, a "yacht floor" and air conditioning that runs on its own power source, Asanti 24-inch Gold Bullion wheels and a water dispenser with Russian diamonds, which the owner will need to fill the golden shishas (hookahs) in the portable smoking room. That's right, you heard the man: a portable smoking room. Where the occupants will retire when they're finished in the portable dining room. Of course.
Yes, it will even have leopard spotting painted onto its nano-coating, and so much more. You can check out the press release below from the source. Try not to be jealous.
