****NO RESERVE***For sale is one very nice example of the 1992 Mercedes Benz 500 SEL. This long wheelbase luxury sedan is in very good condition overall. It frequently gets mistaken for a much newer model than a 1992 due to it's still impressive appearance and the high degree of preservedness. This black on black example still wears it's original factory paint which has held up well, but does have the odd scrape and scratch here and there upon close examination. The largest and most noticeable being on the drivers side, directly behind the rear passenger door. Never the less, the paint shines up great and is not thin or peeling anywhere! The black leather interior is especially nice, with the leather in VERY nice shape for the age and really showing very limited signs of use. The wood is almost perfect, with no usual signs of fading or being bleached out by years of exposure to he sun and that is VERY RARE! The leather on the steering wheel still feels soft and supple and the grey headliner is perfect. All of the many features on this car still work. The only feature needing work is the original Becker/Bose stereo system, which appears to need a new amplifier. It will play occasionally through the rear speakers only but not nearly as it should. Other times it merely makes a loud, obnoxious noise that resembles a fog horn. All else works. NO RUST AND NO OIL LEAKS!! This really is a nice, low mileage car and I hate to see it go. It has factory chrome MBZ wheels and the tires are almost new. The first aid kit is present and the tools are unplundered in the trunk. Books and 2 infrared keys included. A very strong example of the iconic w140  model that needs little to make it a prime example of the marque in a most desirable color combination. BONUS: A $1000 pre loaded savings card issued by Mercedes Benz of San Francisco will be transferred along with this sale. It entitles the bearer to parts, services and accessories at a discounted rate until the thousand dollars is spent up. Please ask any and all questions prior to placing bid. I reserve the right to end the auction early and on any day of the auction as vehicle is advertised locally in the san francisco bay area. CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS ONLY: California buyers will need to obtain a smog certificate to re title the car in your name. Man makes record-setting drive across the US in 28 hours, 50 minutes

Fri, 01 Nov 2013

Records, as the say, are made to be broken. Whether that's cramming the most hot dogs down your gullet, running a faster mile, or yes, driving across the United States, odds are that there's someone out there wants to eat more, run faster or drive harder. Speaking of that last example, the record for driving from a set location on the east coast, in particular the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA, has been one that has fascinated gearheads since a guy named Cannonball Baker made the trek from New York to LA in 53 hours, 30 minutes, in 1933.
The competition saw its glory days when Car and Driver's Brock Yates came up with the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (more affectionately known as the Cannonball Run), although the record was most recently set by Alex Roy and his 32-hour, seven-minute trek behind the wheel of a BMW M5 in 2006. Now, there's a new champion, who made the trip from east to west in a scarcely imaginable 28 hours and 50 minutes, behind the wheel of a 2004 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG. That's works out to an average speed of 98 miles per hour over the course of 2,813.7 miles.
His name is Ed Bolian, and Jalopnik has a writeup of the epic voyage that details everything from the history of the Cannonball Run to Bolian's preparation and trouble finding co-drivers, to the trip itself. It is well worth a read.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Coupe

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

Mercedes-Benz upgraded its SLS flagship Coupe and Roadster for the 2013 model year, and the changes are marked with them new "GT" nomenclature. Both SLS models arrive with a retuned naturally aspired 6.2-liter V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque (the horses are up from 563, but the torque remains the same) mated to a revised seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch gearbox. Rounding out the mechanical upgrades is a redeveloped AMG two-mode adaptive suspension. Physically, the revised models are differentiated by their new "GT" badging, darkened headlight/taillight buckets, red brake calipers, unique wheel colors and high gloss finish on the front grille, exterior mirrors and hood/fender fins. Inside the cabin are new red seatbelts, Alcantara upholstery and contrasting red stitching.
As it is nearly impossible to experience the aluminum gullwing beast on public roads, Mercedes invited out to Southern California's Willow Springs to wring out the 2013 SLS GT Coupe on a racing circuit.

The automotive category did not go wanting for lauded advancements:

BMW 328i: it's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gets called out for being more powerful and frugal than the six-cylinder it replaces.
